Problems with the 392 Rubicon

You were exactly right. On the right side of the engine (from service tech) "found a harness grounding out to the exhaust manifold. Removed the battery tray to access harness about 6 inches before the y291a connector. Found 5 wires shorted, including d303 and d304 going to the sway bar. Repaired all 5 wires and insured harness properly attached to frame, cleared all dtc's". Running great so far.
I kind of looked around in there when I was changing out the inner fender liner and I did not see anything that looked like it would contact the exhaust manifold. Hoping the vented inner fenders will help prevent crap like this. Crazy that they run wires close to the exhaust like that.

Glad you got it fixed.

Any word on the diagnosis?
My “service 4wd “ popped up while on a road trip, stopped at dealer, who said nonworry, cleared code. 60 miles later, light back, snapping of metal sound, followed by grinding noise. Thinking CV joint gave out. Will know more next week once rig is towed in/diagnosed.

Oh I actually didn’t wait for the mystery technician to checking serv 4WD. only done the oil change. And it didn’t really come up again. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞 btw I also had snapping of metal sound from somewhere behind the dashboard when I driving on the beach with off road+ on. But it goes away in few minutes.

@Ting and @thexr6 - SERV 4WD just came up for me, I'm at 6100mi, was only driving normally on freeway, no use of 4WD lately.

Also feels odd when making tight turns (gotta be related to 4WD in some way, no chirping but definitely feels like something is binding when making a tight turn). Anyway, this is the first time I've had this issue and everything has been peachy otherwise!

Did either of you ever get any resolution or more information on this? Worried about taking to dealer because they take forever and I have a bunch of work to do in the next couple weeks. Any help or insight would be appreciated!

Could be clutches engaging to send power to front wheels inappropriately. Emergency fix could be tazer and force 2wd or remove front driveshaft. I would take to dealer and drive something else if possible

Ugh. My light came on and I had to wait for an entire transfer case. No reason for the failure, literally just driving and the light popped on.

The good news is, that’s actually an easy fix – there’s not much to a transfer case replacement. The one challenges is going to be getting the part in stock end. It was about three weeks for me and another three weeks to get in line to get the work scheduled. No residual issues thus far.

Same for me so far, knock on wood. I got mine back about 2 weeks ago. Timeline was about the same for me as you stated.

Update: Reseated fuses (some had come slightly loose sometime during the last 6100 miles - I seated them all when I picked up vehicle from dealer). Vehicle was turned off for about 30 min, I went and seated fuses, started vehicle, drove around the block, and it appears to be functioning properly... for now.

Not sure if seating fuses actually had anything to do with "fix", could just be that it throws fault and there is still issue with actuation motor or transfer case in general. We'll have to see.

Earliest dealer appointment is on the 30th... I booked it, but if no issues arise again I'm hesitant to take it in and leave it there. I need the dang thing! On the other hand, if it keeps switching into 4HI Part Time (I assume this was the binding on tight turns), then I'll just have to bite the bullet and let them deal with it. Will keep updating.

Thanks everyone for the info and responses, you guys are the best!

Symptoms sound very similar. The symptoms would go away after a restart and sit. Would not consistently act up.
Was approx 500 miles between initial issue and the final meltdown.

When you have to leave your Jeep at the deler for them to effect repairs under warranty, I recomend renting a vehicle and claiming reimbursement from Jeeep for the inconvenience. I've been very successful getting them to reimbursement after the fact for my rental expenses when I have to leave my Jeep at the dealer for warranty work .

Explain. How do you “claim reimbursement from Jeep”? We all know Jeep Cares is fake news so how do you go about this?

Excellent advice and definitely something I'll need to consider as it's my DD.

Also interested to hear exactly how you've gone about this process, ie where did you get a rental and how'd you apply for reimbursement (if the rental wasn't through dealer?). Appreciate the feedback!

When they kept mine for the transfer case, the dealer told me that a loaner was free for the entire time because of the repair status being a safety/major failure concern type issue.

The dealer I went to, 'Larry H. Miller' in Tucson offered me an Uber ride home but unfortunataly would not cover the cost to my home 75 miles away. Jeep Customer Care did take of a rental by reimbursing me about $470 for the duration of my Jeep being in the shop so that was my ride home and back for the two days it took for the work to be done.

Im going to ask for transfer case replacement if this latest attempt doesnt work. Good info here.

Even though I have gotten loaners from a local Chevrolet/GMC/Ford/Jeep/Ram/Dodge dealer I hear there are no loaners available, still feeling the supply chain shortage.

Here is the e-mail address to Jeep Customer Care to file a claim for rental car reimbursement. [email protected] Recommend contacting them ahead of time to inquire as to the evidence and anything else that they want prior to filing a claim.
