Problems with the 392 Rubicon

@Ting and @thexr6 - SERV 4WD just came up for me, I'm at 6100mi, was only driving normally on freeway, no use of 4WD lately.

Also feels odd when making tight turns (gotta be related to 4WD in some way, no chirping but definitely feels like something is binding when making a tight turn). Anyway, this is the first time I've had this issue and everything has been peachy otherwise!

Did either of you ever get any resolution or more information on this? Worried about taking to dealer because they take forever and I have a bunch of work to do in the next couple weeks. Any help or insight would be appreciated!
Well it actually pops a few times and I did made a appointment to dealership to check but this issue always disappears after restart So I didn’t really go. And during the oil change they couldn’t find out anything unusual.
*fun fact : every time it happens, is when the performance button is off, so i never turn it off again XD

Im going to ask for transfer case replacement if this latest attempt doesnt work. Good info here.
So the dealer did a wiring harness repair and claims the issue has been fixed. Im picking it up today. I did get a loaner but had to wait a month to get one.

Chock another one up for the SERV 4WD here. Popped up a few months ago at the gas station. The light came on and the front diff locked. Did a u-turn and it hopped all the way around. I took it to the dealer, they cleared the code, and could not duplicate. It came on again at the end of Jan and I took it in immediately. They ordered a transfer case control module the took 2 weeks to get. Picked it up today and the light came back on before I made it home. Guess it’s going back in tomorrow…

OIL LEAK just above the oil filter.

I had a small oil leak just above my oil filter. I initially thought it was run-off from my last oil change but since the leak appeared to be a bit higher than the oil filter I decided to mentioned it to the dealership during my recent 1 year service inspection. There are two threaded plugs that are inserted into the block just above the oil filter. One of the plugs required a decent amount of Teflon tape to seal it back up.

It was mentioned by the service manager that he'd seen three 392s with the same issue. Maybe take a quick peek to ensure you're good.

See pics for further details. In two of the diagrams/pictures I have a pointer 'touching' where the two plugs are located, another diagram has a yellow highlight circling the plugs.

Hope this may help somebody...

Thanks for the pics! I have tried to trace down a tiny oil accumulation issue for a while. And it's highly possible due to the two plugs you mentioned. Do you know what are the purposes of these plugs? If I unscrew one off and apply teflon tape, would lots oil drain from that hole badly during the fix?

My performance exhaust stopped working today. It is stuck in quiet mode. The button shows it turning on and off on the screen but it’s always quiet. I pulled the vacuum lines because I can’t stand quiet mode. Have an appointment with the dealer Monday for them to take a look.

Same here, hoping to get it in for Monday also

7.62x392 cited a 2022 XR as exhibiting the exhaust issue, it would be useful to know what other years and sub—models are experiencing the same issue. I have a 2021 early version of the 392 and have not experienced the same issue.

New 392 with 600 miles. It has the cold start tick/squeaking noise and fades out after 30/60/90 seconds depending on temperature, totally disappears when the engine is fully warm up. Adding to that I can also hear a noise during acceleration, it typically happens when I press the throttle with some speed and disappears after it shifts. Rev the engine at idle, zero noise, so I feel it relates to some moving parts. It’s hard to describe the noise, sounds like a whirring? I may also hear similar thing from my previous 2.0 but not as distinct.

Tick / squeaking is totally normal. It’s the exhaust pipes rattling until they heat up and expand to seal the joint. It’s actually described in the user manual. Not sure about the whirring noise though.

I'd agree that cold start ticking noise seems to be normal for a Hemi V8. I have a Hemi 6.1 in my LJ, conversion was done in 2006. It has always made ticking noise at cold start, then goes away after warm up. It's been a great engine.
I get same ticking noise with my 2023 6.4 that many of you are describing. Noise doesn't last long.

The cold start ticking is a well-known hemi thing, only the acceleration noise makes me a little worried. For the ones who wanna hear your own 392, make sure you turn the performance exhaust off, otherwise nothing can be heard.

I don't know if it is the model of vehicle with a Hemi has anything to do with it or not but my 392 is the only vehicle I have experienced the "Hemi Tic". I've owned a Grand Cherokee SRT with the "6.4" and currently own a Grand Cherokee TrackHawk with a "6.2" and have not heard the same noise I do with my 392. Could it be that the Metric Displacement of the engines has anything to do with the lack of the 'Hemi Tic" noise?:ROFLMAO:🤷‍♀️

Every Hemi I’ve owned since 1999, has that “Hemi tick”. I did notice it’s worse with Mobil 1 than the pennzoil the dealer put in.
If you Google it, there’s a number of YouTube videos done by mechanics who break down the where and why of the tick.

It’s really hard to describe the noise I heard during acceleration, it sounds similar to the cold start ticks with higher frequency, also similar to tin can. Can it be the oil from assembly line being too thick for the central NY cold weather?

Inherently, most new editions have more problems than the following editions. I understand the 392 Rubicon is not considered completely new as the JL body style has been around since 2018, the engine since 2011, and the transmission since 2014 (at least the generation in the 392). However, the 392 Rubicon is a new trim/configuration and many modifications had to be done to fit all components well.

This thread is to help each other out and hopefully minimize serious issues.

So far, from reading other threads/forums:

The fuses not seated well in some 392s have caused some electrical problems.

Wires too close to heat sources have also caused electrical problems.

As the title says, what problems have we encountered?
So mine has over heated twice & blown hoses,
The dealership put a new water pump in it and gave it back to me with a new hose the first time and then it just hang grenaded itself a few days later
Did not sound good at all
