Sport Tcase Swap

That would be great !!!! So much easier to have a complete parts list and a photo detailed step by step instruction when doing these!!! Plus maneuvering the inevitable minefield for us !!! 😁

Did you make this swap yet ? I am asking because I need to do this my TC actuator motor is not working it is just hard stuck in 4 wheel drive and makes steering sharp for parking purposes quite stressful to the front drivetrain.
I have not, I have 3 years left on my mopar extended warranty and a spare stock 392 transfer case on my shelf in the garage. I have a spare actuator motor and clutch pack too. The hybrid sport case and parts are all together but it will be many years down the road before I need to do the swap into my jeep.

Just a quick FYI, Redline canceled the transaction for the transfer case I had ordered and reimbursed my bank account the costs, because my shipping address was different from my billing address. I called them when I got the email about it. Talking with them (Ryan) on the phone he explained that they automatically did this because they figure it could be fraud. He recommended I pay with PayPal and reorder the transfer case so I did and while reordering it I also saw they had a used DTCM for sale and I figured why not, in for a penny in for a pound, it all should come in on April 13th. I have also asked a co worker to help film and document the process, if he has the time available, if not I will do the best I can myself. I have to make it known that I am not doing this at home in my garage I travel for work and I am out working away from home for months at a time so I will have to buy and borrow tools along with finding a suitable place other than this hotel parking lot to do it. I have a local friend who has a big shop and I am fairly sure he will allow me the use of it. I am getting excited and looking forward to doing this.

Will definitely be following this thread mod and the process. Thanks for documenting it !!!

Someone did this earlier and said if he had to do it again he would have just pulled the front half of the transfer case and left the rear part installed? Have you thought about that? When I did my Atlas swap I had to remove my after market fuel tank skid. I don’t know if that’s required on the factory fuel tank skid plate.

I plan to leave the front half of the transfer case installed at least as long as I am able to do so. If it becomes necessary for some unforseen reason to remove it too then I will do so. Hopefully I can get the job done without removing the front half.

Where are you located.

DFW? Then you can swap mine too. I'm in Fort Worth.
Okay, but I have to get mine done first. Finding the time to do it is killing me. I live up in Mckinney but I'm working 6 and 7 days a week out in Abilene so I'm never home. So far I have the donor Tcase split apart in preparation and the skid plate taken off my jeep. I'm doing this in a hotel room parking lot and trying not to attract too much attention. Sadly its cheaper to buy the tools I need to do the work here than it is to go home and get mine. Next purchase is a jack and jack stands. Crazy I have everything I need to do this at home. Yet getting time off is like pulling teeth. Its also going to be another rainy cold weekend anyway.

Holy cow, that is just too much.

Post some pics because the story just keeps evolving. We'd all like to check it out.

I applaud both your ambition and conviction to completing the project. I have done many a project in less then perfect surrounding and that can easily add to the complexity and time it takes to get it done. Keeping my fingers crossed you can get it completed, please be safe, remember, some jack stands don't really like asphalt.

I can remember back a number of years going to a rescue call because of a set of jack stands that sunk into hot soft asphalt collapsed and killed the person under the car.

Thank you for the safety moment, You are absolutely correct I greatly appreciate that warning. I will use some boards under them or get some of those flat concrete pavers.

So for those who are thinking about doing this I have a few pictures of the donor transfer case half all cleaned up and ready to be mated to the front half of my Tcase which will remain on the jeep. Unless I find it impossible to do it without removing the entire Tcase. A word of warning pay close attention to the 3 little humps on the inner splined collar in the last 3 pics. They each house a small spring and a chrome ball about 3/16 of an inch in diameter. These detent balls go into scallops on the outer collar these collars slide forward and back to engage the gear and chain that drive the other gear and shaft which then applies power to the front end. Dont ask how I know about them but suffice it to say my curiosity has taught me a lot of things over the years anyway if you should happen to decide to take yours apart a large Tie wrap / zip tie is what I ended up using to hold them back in place to reassemble it. And yes it took me several maybe a dozen attempts to get it all back together. Anyway my plan was to do this over a few evenings if the weather will cooperate it was cold and rainy all day here but almost 100 degrees earlier this week.

For all of you who are watching this thread YES this swap is real and it can be done without removing the front half of the Tcase from the transmission. I used 1/4" 3/8" and 3/4" drive ratchets with a bunch of assorted extentions and universal swivels for each of them. Fortunately you only need a deep and a shallow 10mm socket 1/4" drive for the 18 bolts holding the halves together. You need a torx size 50 bit 3/8 drive to remove the bolts from the flanges of the Tcase and the rear end and a 15mm box end wrench to remove the front drive shaft from the front differential. The 3/4 drive with a 10" extension and a 32mm socket is to remove the front drive shaft flange from the Tcase, you need the rear drivshaft inplace, the Tcase in 4Wheel drive and the Ebrake set to get that 32mm nut off. The flange came off really easy the puller I used was overkill but it worked. For me this job was more difficult than many of you will find it to be. I did it without the use of a lift on flat ground without raising the vehicle off the pavement. I only removed the skid plate assembly with an 18mm socket. I did not take off the exhaust or the crossmember under the Tcase. And remember those 3 detent balls ? Yeah do yourself a favor and wrap a strap or in my case big tie wrap around the fork assembly as it will fall apart and make you have to reassemble it all over again. I included a picture of the half slid into place with the tie wrap holding it together then after it is slid together I removed the tie wrap and bolted the halves together. Feel free to ask any questions I will do my best to answer them. And by the way it was a huge relief to drive it in 2 high and be able to go in tight circles both directions with no front tire scrub or bunny hopping at all !!! Tomorrow after work I will replace the skidplate assembly and install the new DTCM and hopefully get rid of any trouble codes with the Tazer.

Unfortunately I had nobody to film this, the coworker who was going to film it for me had to work today. The main takeaway is that it can be done and even under less than ideal circumstances.
