Sport Tcase Swap

Installed it today. It is doable with the front half bolted to transmission. I will admit I initially didn't understand the assignment : ). I mistook "input shaft" as what is connected to the transmission. Not the case. You have to use the 392 transfer case shaft with gear that connects the transmission intermediate shaft to the rear drive shaft. Some may correctly(?) call that the input shaft. Either way, it's in. I still have the front drive shaft to install and skid plate but am waiting on a new front axle. DTCM is also installed and setting updated with Tazer. Still have a service 4WD light to figure out. I read some where AlfaOBD (I have it) may be required to change additional settings. Transfer case works as expected though.

For reference, this has the wrong input shaft (the MP1622C) and as such doesn't work. Gotta remove it and put in the 392 that is correctly pictured above.

so correct me if i am wrong
-take off both f/r drive shaft flanges
-unbolt 392 tcase halfs
-you keep the front half of the 392 case (part that mates to the trany) leave that attached
-392 rear half and set aside

-take off both f/r drive shaft flanges on sport tacse
- unbolt sport tcase set aside front half
-pull out 392 gear shafts and chain and same with sport
-swap over the 392 trasmission side gear shaft into the sport rear half using the sport chain
-button it all back up together

-get a DCTM out of the same year v6/i4 rubicon and use the tazer to adjust the tcase gear value and turn off the FAD

Ditto. Great to know this will work.
I am getting this done next week by Tarpon off Road 4x4 shop in Palm Harbor Fl. Sounds like the perfect solution if you’re not wanting to pay 6500$$$ when it’s all said and done for the Atlas. The TC in my 21’ Jeep Wrangler 392 started acting up. It Felt like I had all my lockers on when I went to turn…then it happened again and again. Even with the Tazer in 2wd I still got the same problem. I’ll post my after review..

Will it hold up to the torque of the 392?

It sure will..that’s my black Jeep in the right lane. 2021 Jeep wrangler 392 - sport Tcase custom build…e85 engine and transmission tune 40” tires..I ran consistent 8.4 seconds in the 1/8 mile at 82 mph. All runs were in 4wd and never missed a beat. Most fun I’ve had in a long time..

Don't forget to pick up a Rubicon Transfer Case Control Module. I believe the correct part number is 68483374AB. Also watch ebay for good deals on a 2:72 transfer case. I picked one up used for $200 shipped to my door. I've had no issues with my stock transfer case but plan to do the swap once my extended warranty expires. I don't have a lot of faith in the clutches long term.
Did you make this swap yet ? I am asking because I need to do this my TC actuator motor is not working it is just hard stuck in 4 wheel drive and makes steering sharp for parking purposes quite stressful to the front drivetrain.

I am having the exact same problem, my tazer worked for a while but now its just as you described it like im driving with my front locker on ! I am looking at doing this swap myself now that I have found this forum.

I think Im going to try my hand at this soon. Ordered an MP1622C. Ive had the module for a while. Not too related but will prob pull the transfer case when I do the front axle.
Did you do it ?

I ordered a used MP1622C from Redline, a used parts distributor I found online last night after reading through all this thread and several other forum threads. I will have to order the DCTM module from the local stealership here. I already have the Tazer and No limitz installed because I had been forcing 2 wheel drive until my TC actuator decided to give up. So I'll be doing this rather than the Atlas. My off hyway adventures are not extreme just mild in comparison to many of the others on here. My jeep is my daily driver, I occasionally want to camp, fish and explore. But most of my miles are on the hyway so true 2WD is what I wanted and why I got the Tazer & No Limitz modules already installed.

Those experiences problems with factory transfer cases that appear to be hard stuck in 4wd should consider a couple of things if your 392 is a daily driver. Install a fad to disconnect the right axle shaft, this will save your front CV joints and front drive shaft. Once you transfer case project job is completed you can enjoy a free wheeling front end saving wear, fuel and giving you better handling lighter steering and better tracking. Its the best mode I have done to my 392, it's a shame the factory didn't do it.

Then that will be the very next thing on my to do list. From what I have read on here our 392's don't have the factory wiring for the FAD. Did you have to do your own wiring when adding a Fad or were you able to purchase a factory wiring harness to make this install a true plug & play ?

It will never be a plug & play as you don't have the 2 high option on your transfer case. You have to use the Tazer to force 2WD. You will need to wire a manual switch to operate the FAD.

I have had the Tazer and No Limitz installed for several months now and have used them successfully to force 2WD and eliminate MDS up until now. I joined this forum in my digging for information about this common problem and thankfully now have figured out exactly what direction I am going to go. I did not want to spend $6000 for an Atlas conversion when I do not plan to do any serious offroading. My jeep is my daily driver so I want to do the Jeep sport TC back half conversion and have already ordered a donor MP1622C transfer case. I will order a 2023 jeep Rubicon 3.6L DTCM from the local stealership here Monday. I will also order a FAD. My hope is that the wiring harness for the FAD is just a simple plug in section of wiring that the factory just doesn't include when building these 392 models. If not I will have to wire it myself.

Look for answering harness on the inside passenger frame rail above the axle. I can’t remember if we have them. My old 3.6 had it there.

Thank you

Those with 392 wanting to install FAD, don't waste your time trying to find the connector, Jeep never installed it on the 392.

Here's what you need to do to implement FAD:

This appears to be very doable and affordable. Does anyone know if the same 392 shifter used?
Thanks for sharing.I am about to do this swap myself and will look into just changing the Knob.

Someone who is getting ready to do the MP1622C needs to fully document the procedure, take lots of pictures and point the pitfalls and area's that can get you into trouble. Also, Generate a parts list and where the parts were gotten.

Then it needs to be posted up with a sticky because this mod so important to many 392 owners who do not wish to go the route of the Atlas TC. Perhaps the added interest might spark some aftermarket company to come up with a pre-packaged kit!

I will document as best I can the process of this swap and the parts needed to do it too. The second part of this will be adding in the FAD, as that is also needed to help eliminate some of the rolling drag on the vehicle too.
