Burning Oil Smell

If what they said in the service ticket is true, then you may check that area periodically to see if it leaks again, I mean, use your endoscope to inspect and wipe the area, you can’t rely on smells solely. Now I just pray that they did a good job tightening my cylinder head. I kind of question that because when I climbed underneath the jeep to inspect the leak, I saw oil all over place, apparently they didn’t clean up the mess from the oil filter change. But that valve cover corner is super clean now.

That’s unacceptable they should clean everything. There have been posts on how to do a clean oil change but that filter location drips all over tie rod steering dampener . Glad you got your Jeep back 👍

Well My 2024 is going in next week for an oil leak from the pass front side of the motor. Not happy, but I have high hopes it's an easy fix, between this or the VVT o rings. We shall see.

IDK how much you read in this thread. Both my valve covers were leaking. Running down and burning off on the heads. The dealer was clueless and apparently didn’t have a scope. I bought a scope and found it, recorded the video and showed them. They had it fixed immediately.

Yep I have gone back through the thread. I know it's not dripping down at the pass front, caus it's clean. BUT I get the whiff of burring oil EVERY once in a while, so I assume it's something with a valve cover gasket. If they give me ANY crap I'll pick up a scope (would be a cool tool to have) and look my self. I'm just scratching my head cause the oil level is literally the EXACT same it's been. but the amount of oil all over the axle and ground make me wonder. and it's dark oil not the golden color in the motor (Yeah I'm sure it's the dirt and grime from DD).

Bought my scope on Amazon for $25

Not to turn you down but the oil cooler is more on the driver side and a leak from their would not cause a burning smell.

Ok the oil filter adapter that has the coolant going through it. ;)

Oh I know what it is because I used to have a coolant leak there… I just feel that if you smell burning oil, then oil likely finds its way to exhaust pipe. Any leak around the oil cooler is obvious, hopefully the dealer can fix it.

Take a look at your oil adapter and the two plugs on the upper passenger side of it. That was a source of the tiniest leak on mine. Put your hand up there when it’s cool. If you feel an oily film those plugs are leaking. You’ll smell oil faintly after a decent drive.
I think mine is doing this now. Only 736 miles on it. Drove around today A/C on blast and the interior smelt like oil/engine. Looked after driving I could see an oil film like above. I’ll scope it tomorrow. Even made my clothes and me smell like it.

Oil changed today at 803 miles, first oil change. They say there were no leaks. I waited 3 hours for them to look it over. Tech said oil filter was a thread loose and could unscrew it by hand. Normally said on new Jeep first oil change, they are on tight. No leaks on garage floor before oil change and always full on dip stick. They claim oil could have been coming out and that’s where the burning smell was coming from. We shall see!! Also tightened a loose exhaust hanger.

Now the dealer is going to replace cylinder head assembly, valve cover and gasket, basically a new set of passenger side top. It sounds like an open heart surgery to me. I have concerns they may generate more leaks…

Did this fix your issue? My valve cover is leaking for the 4th time now.

I got rid of the jeep not long after that repair, I really was tired of addressing issues over and over, couldn’t say no to a very sweet trade in deal. The leak didn’t come back in my last few months of ownership, but I can’t say anything for long term. Be aware that this level of repair will leave a huge mark on your carfax report.

Ah gotcha. I don't want my engine torn apart but I'm betting the next step is a new head. I'd rather they just replace the whole engine if it came to that.

The dealer billed Jeep ~ $4000 for that repair, I bet replacing an engine is not an option for this issue given the price of the 392 engine. Good luck.
