Anyone else get the occasional smell of burning oil? I have scoured and searched for any signs of oil seeping out somewhere and burning off the block or headers. I can’t find anything. It seems to happen more when I am decelerating for a few seconds or more and come to a stop, particularly when on a downslope. It’s strange. It not coming from the exhaust. I notice it most through the air vents. Within a few seconds, it’s gone. Makes me think there’s a loose valve cover.
Anyone else find this and have a fix or share what their experience was? Regretfully, swinging by the dealer today to have the, check it as well.

Check PCV system for a crack or loose parts. Do you have a catch can? Check that and make sure everything is tight.

I have checked all of that. No catch can. But I did wonder if perhaps there’s enough blow by that a catch can might be the fix.

I recall the 3.6 having some issues with that....idk if that thread would be of any help.

Interesting
I’ll give that another look
Oddly enough, never had that issue with my JK.

Unfortunately, the best update I have in this issue.

The dealer has NFC. neither they or I can locate where the oil is burning off. It’s happening on the regular, with no evidence of oil loss or anywhere it’s burning.

I did discover the intake manifold bolts were loose. I was hopeful the blow by was the culprit and perhaps it was creeping out from the manifold. No dice…

it’s happening more frequently, which leads me to believe it will just blow out at some point.

I’ve raccooned the hell out of that bay, top side, bottom side, and no signs anywhere. Even my lady friend, who know nothing about cars other than how to spend $100k on one, knows it’s not normal and it’s the smell of oil burning.
back to the dealer this week to see if they can figure it out. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Have them add some ultraviolet dye to your oil. You’ll find your leak…. If there is one.

They are…
been down that road before and rarely get a solution.
Land Rover, previous Jeeps, etc. every time we go down the “we’ll add ye”, or resulted in still not knowing, or, in the case of the Land Rover, a new motor.

If you can smell it it’s leaking from somewhere. I had a tiny drip on the new oil filter I installed and it smelled like hot burning oil. Speaking of, did you check the area around the oil filter adapter? That seems like an area prone to leaks. There’s also an oil temp or pressure sending unit that’s on top of that adapter. On my TRX (similar oil filter adapter) had the tiniest leak that eventually trickled along the block and showed up on the bottom of my starter motor.

I’ll check that as well. It smells like it’s coming off the header.
It’s driving me nuts. 🤣

That stuff travels from the weirdest places and ends up somewhere completely else. Good luck tracking it down. I thought I had a rear main seal leak on the TRX since it was showing up on the starter but it ended up being that sensor towards the front of the engine.

This motor is packed on so damn tight, it’s tough to see anything.

Do you recall which sensor it was?

The one on the Jeep is part 5 on this blown up pic of the oil filter adapter. It’s either an oil temp or oil pressure sensor. That’s what was leaking on my TRX (similar oil adapter setup as our Jeeps)

Thank you
I’ll look at that this week.

You can barely see that sensor from the top side of the engine on the passenger side with a strong flashlight.

Take a look at post #314 on this thread also:

Does anyone know how to pop off the plastic 392 protectors?

We just noticed smell of burt oil for the first time in the last few weeks.

I called dealership right away to let them know I thought they spilled when the filled it last but wanted to have them check it.

Typical dealership say they didn’t spill but I’ll let you be the judge of that from the pics. Keep in mind when deliberating, they have completed every oil change and have been the only people to touch it other than us.

Scary thing is they had to top of the oil, 1600 miles into last oil change (change every 5k) and the oil looks dark. this is the first time the oil changed color or didn’t stayed clean within the 5k oil changes.

Another oil changed scheduled for tomorrow to see if they if it look dark after 2k. I’ll let you know.

Just pull them straight up.
