Burning Oil Smell

Anyone else get the occasional smell of burning oil? I have scoured and searched for any signs of oil seeping out somewhere and burning off the block or headers. I can’t find anything. It seems to happen more when I am decelerating for a few seconds or more and come to a stop, particularly when on a downslope. It’s strange. It not coming from the exhaust. I notice it most through the air vents. Within a few seconds, it’s gone. Makes me think there’s a loose valve cover.
Anyone else find this and have a fix or share what their experience was? Regretfully, swinging by the dealer today to have the, check it as well.

Did you ever get your oil issue resolved? Mine seems to be doing the same thing. No idea where the oil is coming from and the smell only happens every few weeks.

Take a look at your oil adapter and the two plugs on the upper passenger side of it. That was a source of the tiniest leak on mine. Put your hand up there when it’s cool. If you feel an oily film those plugs are leaking. You’ll smell oil faintly after a decent drive.

This is where the oil filter is, correct? I checked that area today however, I didn't reach behind it to check for oil. I'll do that tomorrow (engine is still hot now). I hope it's something this simple. Thanks for the info!

Yes, go up the passenger side above the filter high up and feel around those two plugs.

I'll check that area too, but visibility isn't very good there. It's happened to me going uphill but not always. And it's also happened on a flat area. The smell dissipates pretty quickly, almost like a drop falls on the exhaust, then is gone.

Same for the smell. Intermittent and short lived.
With your experience, I’m more convinced it’s a loose valve cover.

I need to just stat pulling the top apart and fix it.
My experience with the dealer, since they have been acquired, is far less than it was previously.

The dealer looked at the issue today and saw no sign of an oil leak. They suspect some of the labels that are still on the exhaust burning off. But to me, the odor definitely smells like burning oil. Maybe some labels smell like that? No idea.

Labels burning and oil burning don’t smell the same. The labels burning off will last a few days at most or one long drive and be done.

Yup, I agree.

A friend of mine suspects its something with the pcv system causing the odor.

I'm going to swap out the pcv valve, see what happens. I picked up a borescope too so I can really get into the tough areas and see if I can spot a leak.

Well, I bought a borescope and found the leak. It appears the valve cover gasket on the passenger side has a small leak. You can see the oil stain connected to the drip. This is located right above the exhaust on the passenger side. Back to the dealer I go. Perhaps I should have them reimburse me for the borescope while I'm there.

Or the pcv valve is building pressure pushing out some of the oil. Either way, the dealer needs to address it.

I wondered about the PVC, yet always believed it was the valve cover gasket. Particularly the front, as the smell kicks up when on a downward grade.

Yeah the scope wasn't expensive. I think I paid $65 or $70 for mine. It takes photos and video. It came with a memory card and has 3 cameras to toggle through to see better.

Yup, the odor happened on mine 3x when I was going uphill but it wasn't every time. And it happened on flat surfaces too. I'm sure its just a really slow leak, but it's frustrating that it happened on a brand new car.

It’s intermittent.
Sometimes, a few times in a day, then 2 weeks and nothing.

Take a look at your front driveshaft boot. I've had it torn on both of my 392's . The grease is heating up and leaking on the exhaust..
