Transfer Case Failure

The dealer is going to remove the transfer case next week, open it up and see if there is an obvious failure of something. I'm told that there are only two electronic related parts in the transfer case, the actuator motor and the control module and those parts are available. The whole transfer case is available also. I'm still tying to find out what would trigger the code C140E-00 (transfer case motor blocked), and if it happens on the trail what is the worse case failure and how do I get moving....

There was a batch of transfer case motors that were bad on the TRX forum. They were just poorly made. There was a tech on there who took one apart and found that the spring was binding on the transfer case motor causing it to overheat and caused cascading issues with the T-case engaging. I’ll see if I can find that thread on the Ram-Trx forum.

Thanks very useful information.

So I am not happy to be a newly inducted member to this thread. I had the left head issue on my 2012 JK too. Why do keep doing this to myself? (Oh wait..because I love the darn things no matter how much CDJR tries to piss me off.)
The usual service light and locking front like everyone else.
So anyone with recent experience? I've been told the new T case is on back order with no end in sight. (They've had it since 11/22.) My 75+ parents are coming out over Christmas. They're not getting into my 4" lifted JK without a ladder and maybe a shovel. Not to mention I haven't had the rear seat in since 2012.

Our Aug 2022 build had the same issue at 6k miles. The dealer changed the motor after troubleshooting the transfer case issue. Took weeks to troubleshoot; only time will tell if it's really fixed since it was an intermittent issue.

So all is well. Just got Sarge back. All in all- considering it went in over Thanksgiving and there was just a strike- I am not too upset at the time frame. Once they got the Tcase in they had it back to me in a couple of days.

Driving around this weekend, the service 4wd light comes on. Stop by dealer and drop it off. This morning they say transfer case needs to be replaced and it will likely be 2-3 weeks waiting on parts. I’m completely bummed. :(
Took 6 weeks for mine to arrive! 😩 They did provide a rental car for nothing.

Was this recently? I know they were behind due to the strike but mine (only) took 3 weeks with Thanksgiving in the middle. Nice that they offered a rental though. My dealer did not but my (awesome) service tech knows full well how many cars we own. LOL

I dropped mine off in late September, so I hit mid strike 😕

I've been really enjoying my 2022 JL 392XR, but a few months ago, I started getting the "Service 4WD" light go on and having issues driving when turning my steering wheel all the way (as done when making a U-turn). The light went on intermittently, and so was the issue......it didn't happen often. Once I turned the Jeep off and restarted, the problem went away. I made a service appointment, and they told me the code has to do with my transfer case. They said they had to replace the transfer case and that it would take two weeks for the part to come in. They had the 392 for three weeks before they returned it to me. Thankfully, I had a loaner vehicle. I got it back and it was running fine for 3 weeks. All of a sudden, the "Service 4WD" light came back on and the problem started again, but this time the light went on every time I started the 392 and the problem is present. No longer an intermittent problem. I have to say, I'm really frustrated. Is this going to be a regular issue that never goes away? I'm wondering if they even put in a NEW transfer case. I had the original transfer case for a while before it started acting up, but the second time it started acting up after a few hundred miles. The Jeep only has 4700 miles on it and now I have to take back in for this transfer case issue. They'll probably have it for another 3 weeks. FML.

I think you are right to be suspicious. Sounds like an intermittent issue associated with the transfer case actuator motor. If they changed the entire transfer case, this should have addressed your actuator motor issue. If it is an issue with the wiring harness, then they may have thrown alot of money at it and didn't fix the real cause. My dealer opened a STAR case and was given this troubleshooting guide to work through. They changed our actuator motor (our 392 was an AUG22 build) and it has been okay since.

When you get sick of problems…

Thank you!

Add me to the list! Had the service 4wd message pop up. Turned the Jeep off and let it sit for a bit. Started it back up and didn’t want to go forward or back. Just made a loud grinding noise. Immediately turned it off and had it towed to the nearest dealer. Build date was late 2022 and had about 8k miles on it.

That stinks!! Sorry to hear that. This past Saturday I got my 392 back from the dealer for the “Svc 4WD” light going on a second time. They had the 392 in the shop since 2/21/24. Can you believe it? Over 6 weeks!! They claimed it was because parts took very long to get to the dealer. We’ll see how it goes. Hopefully the issue is fixed and doesn’t come back. I hope they repair yours right the first time, and quickly.

Yeesh that’s rough… hoping for a bit quicker of a turnaround on mine. What part(s) were they waiting for on yours?

I just got T case #2 replaced. This time I was over an hour away from home with traffic backing up by the minute. After waiting on Triple AAA and a flat bed for almost 4 hours- and traffic now at 2 1/2 hours to get home...I got a hotel room. (I'd been in San Diego for the weekend so I had a bag already.) As I suspected in the morning the light was off and I was back in 4Hi so I drove it right to my dealer. (I only trust my service tech...mostly). Metal shavings in the fluid. Hopefully this one is right...At the same time my 2012 JK threw a code and now I can't pass smog until I figure out what's leaking. Jeep is making it hard to be a Jeep girl right now.

They were waiting for a “4WD Switch” for the transfer case issue, and new drivers door weather stripping as I had rainwater entering the drivers footwell during heavy rains. It looks like they also adjusted the drivers door alignment. Now, I don’t know what the “4WD Switch” does, but when they ran a diagnostic and did their due diligence, this is the issue they found. So far so good, but it’s early still. Is it horrible that I’m not confident that this issue will not return?

Assume they are now just replacing the actuator motor if there is no carnage in the case. Metal in the atf-4 means new entire t-case, just a serv 4WD light means new actuator motor,
