My wife was showing me a post on her FB account in the 392 group I made her join. The post showed a whole lot of people that already had an atlas installed.

It seems it is an inevitable fix for all 392s. So I wanted to start an info thread.

How much $$ were parts all in, t-case, shafts, DTCM, etc?

DIY or shop? Install price and location?

What ratio and why?

I think everyone will have to do this someday so we need to figure out best deals etc…

So, I'm aware of one YouTuber who burned out the transfer case clutches running in AWD when he should have used 4WD, and a very low number of units that seem to have had an electronic failure in the clutch actuator sensor or motor.

I'm not sure that means we will all have to buy an Atlas, but they make a heck of a transfer case. It looks like about 5.5k for the transfer case, depending on your options, out the door, plus new shafts, and whatever it takes to make the shifter work.... and labor.... pushing 10k maybe? plus front hubs?

I'm interested in hearing from someone who's done it.

I was surprised with all the posts on FB also. It was shocking…. I had hear of just a handful also.

+guruman 👍🏻. This is fake news that usually starts with a content creator, whom is either stupid or getting paid, then it gets propagated by the internet experts out there.

A similar story was recently done on CV joints being the weak link in the 392… and they recommend that we all run out and replace them with RCV’s.

Don’t get me wrong, both would make great upgrades… but an Atlas would be overkill for 99.999% of the trails any of our 392’s are going to see and RCVs are something you add when your warranty runs out and you need to replace them… or you move to 1-tons and you want to maintain the full time 4wd and avoid the crow-hop of a u joint.

I hope you are correct. Fake news. Anyone a member of the 392 FB group? Even Scott Blum, the Jeep employee person on there said he had an atlas to put into his 392…

Scott Blum has a heavily built 392 on 40s that he wheels hard regularly. I’d argue he’s not the best example to use as why ‘everyone’ with a 392 needs an Atlas.

Last year I joined the Jeep 392 FB group for a few days, too much scattered information and noise. So I left the group. Still like the forum platform.
Agree, I'm on those FB groups and while it's nice to get some coverage of 392's on FB (I've been able to figure out who a few of us are over there too LOL), this and the JL forum are where I get 99% of my info. While there are some nuggets from FB, most info is just normal social media buzz, that is all over the place (except for Scott LOL He is Legit)

Atlas install is pretty harrowing. Content with the Tazer and one button 2H.

I don't think there is any evidence that shows forcing 2wd prevents failures. I fact the Tazer continuously turning it to 2wd, and the Jeep trying to do 4h... it might actually cause the actuator mechanism more grief.

It might help with clutch wear, but that's been a small percentage of failures.

Sounds like an extended warranty may be a lot cheaper than an Atlas.
If you were replacing axles with dana 60/70 or 80...then it would make sense to upgraded to an Atlas.
How many are going to wheel a $110k Jeep that hard? Maybe I'm wrong???

Think Scott upgraded axles and mentioned an Atlas is coming at some point?

That is exactly what my local Jeep Service Manager told me about running in Forced Rear Wheel Drive for extended amount of time. Said that with the electric motor forcing clutches to disengage, that over time it could put excessive ware on electric motor. I will ask again because it seems to me, when in AWD the electric motor is working to force clutches together. Why would open (2wd) be more stressful on the motor than closed 4wd)?
Seems motor is working either way?

2022 392 on 40s. Fusion Dana 60 up front, 80 in rear. Rock krawler long arm kit. I wheel this jeep all over Southwest. It has done the rubicon as well. First stock transfer case made it 4500 miles. Second stock case made it 800 miles. Getting warranty repair was a huge pain. Atlas has now been in for about 500 miles. Same shop did all the work, not their first rodeo but the install and getting computer happy was not fun. A switch had to be added to tell computer when it is in 4 low to get e lockers to work. We can’t seem to get the service 4WD light to go away no matter what but it drives great in 2 high now.

Do you mind letting us know:
1. what shop?
2. what did it cost? Any breakdown of parts. I think a DTCM from a 4xe is required.
3. What ratio?

thanks
