PSC 392 XD Electric Power Steering Pump

Been following this thread and it is a shame to have these issues on a $100+K vehicle that is advertised for off-road. I have used 2 great shops for my JL370 Rubicon and Mount Zion is one of them. This is their install of the PSC Adventure kit. It is pricey, but the results show this may be the right kit.
Thats a PSC Hydro assist kit which I have on my 2005 LJ, not the new kit that PSC has just come out with for our 392's. Hydro assist works amazing if you are in the rocks all the time. If you are daily driving not so much and if you like the way the 392 drives now on road its not going to be the same with that kit.

This is their new Adventure kit with a bet driven pump

This is the kit a bunch of us are interested in but have yet to see any real world testing. This kit does not use Swepco fluid like all their other hydro assist kits and is a modified pump similar to the Apex kit.

I have their full kit on my 392. No complaints and I couldn’t imagine wheeling without it. 40’s + Lockers = No Problem 😉

I just finished installing PSC's XD Electric pump, cooler and steering gear. No Ram assist but it can be added later if needed. I just finished yesterday so not many miles on it but I can tell that it does indeed perform better at idle. I never had the over heat issue some of you had but I was having a hard time turning the steering at idle. You know, when parking at the mall. Before, I'd get about 3/4 turn of the steering wheel, then have to let the Jeep start rolling to turn further. Now, I go lock to lock while in park with 37" tires at 30ish psi. I still need to drive it more...

Thank you for being the guinea pig and reporting. Do you have the PSC power steering pump and the box? Keep us posted on how your system works, especially if you're able to air down your tires and try it off-road.

Yes please keep us posted if you take it off road. What tire size you are running and how it performs.

I have these two items.

Might be a bit before hitting the trails. I work too much. Lol.

I suppose I should have mentioned the 37" tires originally. Sorry about that.

That seems like the optimal setup for a mostly daily driver rig.
Curious of your thoughts after a little time with new system.
Maybe I’d add a fan for extra cooling?

Honestly, I'm not interested in installing a fan. Haven't needed it yet. But if someday I do need it, I'll explore the options then.

I wired in a fan. All my offroading last week, I never got a hot power steering warning. So for me it only solves part of the 392 steering issues.. I'm on 38's. The turning of the steering wheel while not moving sucks with oem pump pressure. One can get into a pucker factor on shelf road switchbacks where you need to do a 3 point turn and you have to move while turning. In my opinion, a steering system upgrade of some sort is necessary with a 392 and bigger tires. As well as a front big brake kit of some sort.

The 392 is still an incredible and quite capable off road vehicle.

I don’t think factory designed the steering system to accommodate over a 35” tire. Original design was to handle a 33” tire. And remember, we are talking about a K02 35” tire, which mine measures 33.75” at 36psi.

Even going back to the TJ days. I bought a new Rubicon the first year it was offered. Stock tire was 33” Wrangler. When I went to 36” tires, I started having steering issues in the rock trails. So I added a PSC ram assist.
I think we are in same situation with our 392’s.

Time will tell how large of tire the new PSC XD electric pump, along with PSC upgraded steering box, will accommodate. Good news is if it does start to overheat with 38” tires, but will turn them, the addition of a fan may be the solution?
So there is still hope with staying with electric steering pump for the mostly daily driver.

The ideal set up for me would be an upgraded Electric power, steering pump, the Apex power, steering pressure, boost system, and hydraulic line cooler and that's it. Perhaps the PSC pump does a better job of cooling the electronics than the stock one, I have also heard that Apex is working on a solution for the overheating of the power steering pump electronic system. I am running 37 inch tires and air them down to about 12 psi and do mostly rock crawling when I take it off road. The current system doesn't perform very well and I think if I could boost the pressure and keep the pump cool I might be OK. If nobody comes out with a pump that runs better, I will probably add the cooling fan. I am hoping to not change out the power steering box or add ahydraulic cylinder for steering. I had that system on my last bronco and didn't like the street manners at all.

This company seems interesting.

I agree, a ram assist definitely changes road manners.
When I tried to pin PSC down about differences between their XD electric pump and stock…. they claim additional cooling fins for pump, but basically the same pump design as stock, and remap to increase pressure at lower rpm’s.
I asked several times about overheating with 37” tires and never got a satisfying answer.
All they said was they are testing two Jeeps… a 392 and a Gladiator. Neither had not overheated and there would soon be a video released on YouTube. Never saw that video, but the one they did release was a hydrolic pump steering system.

So I guess we will have to rely on member here bkilby that just installed the XD electric system, along with upgraded steering box.
