Power Steering HOT Warning?

I too have this problem with my new 392 FE. Second day of off-roading through the end of the week I would get a power steering overheat warning every hour or so for days on end. I would pull over and stop, let it cool, and continue. I do have skid plates installed.

Hi Earl,
Currently off roading for the next couple of weeks, so it'll be a while, before I can take off my liners for a picture. @ParadigmDawg has one I made, perhaps he can post a picture. I believe the IP rating is 68. They make a pusher fan and a puller, I got pusher so I rewired it.
Here you go.

I have yet to have mine come on. My normal offroading is once a week. Start my Jeep drive 2 hours to the park, wheel for 6+ hours and drive back home. I only turn off my Jeep once to gas up and I live in Texas so it's 90-100+ degrees and I play in some big rocks with average speeds of 1-4 mph.

I have skids too.

I just posted in a separate thread then found this one. Same thing happened to me today. Waiting on a call back from my dealer. Depending on recommendations from other members and the dealer, I'll be looking at upgrades. It's concerning when I'm 100 miles from home in the middle of the rockies.

Didn’t think mentioning at the time but yes all my overheating issues happened in the Colorado at high altitude of course miles from anyone.

I live in the mountains of Colorado also. Most of my problems happen above 10,000 feet. I’m on my 3rd power steering pump at 10,000 miles. After they get hot enough times they start leaking. Sine I added the fan I’ve never had a problem.

Happened to me last week on Rocky Gap outside of Vegas. It was about 100F out, and it started about 15 minutes into the trail. Second trail I have been on in my '24, still on the stock 35s. I'm not impressed, my '18 on 37s never did it.

Has anyone tried the Apex power steering cooler? It's not too expensive and I haven't researched it extensively but looks like an option.

The problem is not with hot power steering fluid, but from the electronics in the pump getting hot. The only solution that people have done that seems to work is to add a cooling fan that blows on the pump itself.

I spoke with my Jeep mechanic today and he said Hydro assist is 100% the only real solution for me and definitely the next upgrade I should do. We were "off the record" and he said he could just do it at his house vs the shop to save a lot of money.

Have still experienced the warnings after you installed the cooling fan?

Also, the hydro assist (some say) negatively affects on-road driving. Is this true?

An update on my experience with this warning.

- This error only started once I've upgraded from the 35" OEM tires to 37" M/T A/Ts.

- It shows when I off-road ONLY, except one time when was trying to back-up and park my 22' RV into its assigned spot, on gravel. I did it many times on pavement with no warnings.

- I had a couple of very long (10 straight hours drives) and high altitude (AZ - Flagstaff - Colorado) trips towing my 22' RV - no warnings whatsoever.

- When on the trail, once I get the warning light I use the Taser hot-key combo to turn on the radiator fan at max. After a while the light turns off and stays off.

- I have never experienced any change in the steering feel, even with the warning light on. I haven't noticed and fluid leaks from the pump either.

My next step is to install the cooling fan for the pump. Based on my reading the hydro assist (PSC pump) has a negative impact on on-road driving which makes it unattractive option for me.

Has anyone heard about this new PSC Adventure Steering Kit?

I have yet to install the fan since I have never had an overheating issue. My issue is not being able to turn at all when locked.

He did say it's a learning curve on the highway with hydro.

Wow! Never had that problem with my 37"s and I also had few gnarly rock crawling trips. I was locked both front and rear and I can still steer fine.

What tires/wheels do you have?

For me it depends on terrain sandy loose soil or rocks no problems sharp hard planted rock volcanic that’s a different story . Jeep did us no favors with this electric pump. Thanks Jeep 😵‍💫

I didn’t buy as a kit, but I have these components installed . Works great so far.
