Power Steering HOT Warning?

Did you set it up to run two wheel drive ? Or did it set itself up?
Clutches get hot and your front wheels quit pulling. Same problem as this guy.

I got the Power Steering Hot error yesterday while crawling in the desert with a local club. The trail was technical, slow going and required maximum articulation. This is a 2024 with AEV 3" High Capacity lift, rolling on 37" MT BB A/Ts.

The error went away after the trail got a bit easier and was able to speed up a bit.

Never got this error before and I'd like it to remain so, so am evaluating between the electric fan or the APEX cooler. Since I wheel a lot in dusty conditions, I'm

With 37" tires and much off-roading, I'd look into PSC electric pump upgrade system.

I did not KNOWINGLY do it. Several times it's switched on me.... mostly from 2wd back to 4 auto, but twice I'm sure it went into force 2wd, once leaving me really confused that I did not have 4wd in low range.

With the Tazer, you can navigate to the Audio dash menu, then hold the left arrow and press the cruise button to get into the Tazer menu, and the cancel button to cycle through the options, once you get to "force 2wd" you hit the cruise button to toggle it.

You can also remap a button to do this without digging through the menus, but I've never done that.

At first I thought maybe the Botton mapping was a default and I was just accidentally toggling it without knowing, but on one occasion, I actually noticed the 4auto light coming back on (it commonly flickers on and off, but this time stayed on) and I was sitting still doing nothing and used no buttons. So I KNOW it did it by itself, but it happens very rarely.

I unmarried the Tazer and still had no 4WD in 4Lo. Front axle would not pull the tires.

So, 4K on the Jeep 392. While driving on the highway this week I start to notice a change in how the steering wheel felt. Eventually, the Jeep began to periodically flash "Power Steering System Hot...." and it would disappear. The performance of the steering wheel pretty much went down to no power steering all of the sudden and the warning remained. I got the Jeep down the road without power steering but it was like being in the 50's driving a tank. I've let it cool for a day and it is still showing the warning and zero power steering. Fluid level looks fine. Anyone else seem to have this issue? I noticed the steering wheel would quickly freeze one or twice in a parking lot, thought it was just a fluke a month earlier, but then this event occurred while driving and for what seems permanently. Anyone, else had a steering issue?

View attachment 2394I did on mine a few months ago, it stayed on for 3 minutes and went away. I took it to the dealership and told them about it. They scanned it and did not find anything wrong with it, but those guys mostly don't know ISH about anything and wouldn't trust them. good thing it just went away on its own.

Just a follow-up to my own experience with the Hot Steering Pump warning:

I didn't make any changes to the pump venting as of yet.

Got the error again while on a steep climb that was quite rutted. I was actually firmly pushing the steering wheel so that the wheel would follow one of the slanted faces of the rut. It wasn't a particularly long hill, but enough for the alert to popup it seems.

I continued to drive with the error on with no effects on the steering feel or operation for the next 10-15 minutes until we had a 5 mins break. The alert turned off by itself afterwards, only to come back 20 mins afterwards on the trail.

We passed a stream, and I've accelerated to get some splash hopefully over the pump. It worked. The error went away and didn't return for the rest of the trip.

I wonder if the Artec full belly skid might have a negative effect over the air flow, especially at low speeds ?!?

Does anyone that has this error also have a full belly skid?

I had the light before I put on the skids as well as after the skids. I'm convinced that the fix is to add an electric fan in front of the pump. I've never had the light since I added the fan.

Thanks for the feedback. I believe you. I was just wondering if the skid had any effect since it could potentially deflect air flow.

I have tried just about everything to keep my power steering pump from overheating. I'm on my 3rd power steering pump at 8,000 miles. I've cut the inner fender well out to provide more air. Installed the Apex power steering cooler and nothing seems to help. If you use your Tazer to run your radiator fan non stop if will certainly help. The loud noise of the radiator fan on high gets a little old after awhile. Last week I installed an electric fan directly in front of the power steering pump and it seems to have fixed the problem. I spent the week in Ouray, CO, aired down to 12 psi on 37x12.50 tires and never got the power steering hot light. I need to build a better bracket for the electric fan but I believe this is the fix for the power steering hot light.

SPAL 30103018 4'' 12 Volt Puller Low Profile Fan on Amazon for $53.95.

I am getting power steering hot a lot now when wheeling. I saw your fan post. How did you mount this fan and also how did you wire it? I'd love to connect it to an aux switch

First, make sure the ps fluid reservoir is correctly filled. Mine was low from factory.
You can make a bracket from a 90 degree 4" or 5" galvanized L bracket from home depot and 2 - 1.5" L brackets. Bend big bracket about 10 degrees to fit, you may have to trim length. Set in front of ps motor and wire it to an aux switch. Wire fan reverse polarity (black to red, red to black). Drill 3/8" hole off center in bracket to move bracket closer to pump. Connect bracket to existing hole in frame.

Please read my posts, I went through this and it started similar, however it’s not as easy to diagnose. What is the voltage reading going on while driving? Any dip in voltage dropping? 2) have you checked the electronic steering pump? 3) based on voltage, check Alternator. 4) loose ground wires ( check voltage) 5) are you using pedal commander or pedal monster? 6) have you had any tuning dune to your jeep. 7) what are the outside temps presently? 8) do you have skid plates on?

Can you add the photo of fan installed might be helpful. Also how waterproof is that fan?

Thanks

I have a little over 6600 miles on mine and no issue like that. The only issue I have with mine is an ongoing problem with the transfer case. Every so often the service 4WD light comes on and the wheels lock up during turns. Keep taking it back to the dealer and they always repair it but the problem comes back eventually.

Agreed, I would have the dealership check it. The likely culprit is a ground if this is happening at high speeds.

Hi Earl,
Currently off roading for the next couple of weeks, so it'll be a while, before I can take off my liners for a picture. @ParadigmDawg has one I made, perhaps he can post a picture. I believe the IP rating is 68. They make a pusher fan and a puller, I got pusher so I rewired it.

Do you have the air blowing on to the power steering pump or pulling it away from the pump? It would look like you could just flop the fan 180° and it would not need to be rewired and would still fit your bracket, but I'm not sure.

Air is blowing on the ps pump. I could not flip the fan because there is very limited space to place it.

I was having This issue regularly but usually in conjunction with a high voltage warning as well.

I added an apex steering boost kit with cooler and the power steering hot lamp went away 9 out of 10 times the voltage light came on. I didn’t do this to solve the warning lamp, but did it so i can actually turn the 37’s.

The voltage issue was a bad ground…I was not getting a solid ground for my accessories using the grounding posts on the fender next to the battery. I fixed that.

Since doing both of the above, I have not had a single hot power steering issue.

Thanks keep the rubber side down 👍⛽⛽⛽⛽⛽
