Power Steering HOT Warning?

I got the Power Steering Hot error yesterday while crawling in the desert with a local club. The trail was technical, slow going and required maximum articulation. This is a 2024 with AEV 3" High Capacity lift, rolling on 37" MT BB A/Ts.

The error went away after the trail got a bit easier and was able to speed up a bit.

Never got this error before and I'd like it to remain so, so am evaluating between the electric fan or the APEX cooler. Since I wheel a lot in dusty conditions, I'm

I had this too, but it was happening while I was on the highway and not even turning the wheels. It was happening multiple times per hour. The dealer replaced my power steering pump module. No more errors.

Thanks for your feedback. I'm leery to have any dealer (or mechanics in general) touch my Jeep so I'm trying to investigate if this is a fluke, due to a defect, or normal behaviour.

If the latter, a cooling solution sould prevent it.

I know this is an old thread, but do you mind updating how this worked out for you? Did it solve the power steering overheating for good? If so, how did you mount the fan there? did you fabricate something or just plain zip ties?
I purchased an L bracket from home Depot. I bolted the l bracket to the frame with 2 bolts. There was already a couple of holes in the frame. One bolt I went through the frame, used a washer on each end and a lock nut. The other hole I used a self tapping screw. I then used epoxy putty to stick the fan to the L bracket and one bolt drilled through the bottom bracket of the fan. This was just a quick made bracket for testing which I plan to upgrade in the future. Got about a 1000 miles on it and have never had a hot power steering pump light again. The key would be to find a fan that has a good fan cage around it with mounting holes.

Thanks @EBYCREEK. I'll wait for a while to see if I get this error in normal circumstances. If I do, I'll see the dealer, but if not, I might with the APEX radiator instead. I wheel in the desert and am afraid that dust might kill the fan (even though I did note that it seems made for bikes and farm equipment, so I might overreact).

I added the apex cooler and it made no difference. I have the fan wired to my AUX switches so I only run it while rock crawling or if the PWR steering hot light comes on. It's definitely the pump getting hot, not the fluid. I'm on my 3rd power steering pump at 9,000 miles.

Aha! Good to know! I guess fan it is then.

Have you tried to vent the inner fender liner? That might help with air circulation too.

I started by cutting the inner fender liner a little at a time. I now have it cut out so large you can see the entire pump. Nothing seemed to work until I put the fan on. Air movement over the pump is the trick.

My warning msg said power steering might be reduced. Or something to that effect the trail was straight, up hill full of large loose rock the warning went away in less than a minute.months later The second time steering situation happened I pulled off the trail so my wife could look to the right and see something . There were some embedded sharp rocks not big . When leaving the view point I tried to turn left to get back on the trail I could not turn the wheel at all I had to back up then I could turn. All I can think is there was just enough wedge between rocks and tire. Still think it’s a weak system

You would think the radiator fan would help

If you run the radiator fan on high using the Tazer it does help, but the sound of the fan running on high gets old real quick.

Yea I don’t do that but when it comes on I just don’t like the noise. But I do have the tazer

So, 4K on the Jeep 392. While driving on the highway this week I start to notice a change in how the steering wheel felt. Eventually, the Jeep began to periodically flash "Power Steering System Hot...." and it would disappear. The performance of the steering wheel pretty much went down to no power steering all of the sudden and the warning remained. I got the Jeep down the road without power steering but it was like being in the 50's driving a tank. I've let it cool for a day and it is still showing the warning and zero power steering. Fluid level looks fine. Anyone else seem to have this issue? I noticed the steering wheel would quickly freeze one or twice in a parking lot, thought it was just a fluke a month earlier, but then this event occurred while driving and for what seems permanently. Anyone, else had a steering issue?

I had the same problem but it happened to me once, before i installed 37 tires and off roaded so i believe it could be because of that

Just completed the Hole in the Rock (Badge Trail) last week. Logged about 25 hours of 4Lo at about 85 degrees with the power steering fan I installed and never got the Power Steering Hot Light. I did however have my front wheels quit pulling about halfway through the 3rd day. Let it set for a few hours and it started working again. Definitely going to have to move to the Atlas Transfer Case in the near future.

I thought in 4 lo there were no clutches being used just gearing. Why would t case stop working. Just asking thanks for your report

Always a clutch to engage. T-case would never “stop” working, just would not have front drive.

But this is the first report of front drive “fading” and then returning. That is a new one…

I've had my Tazer mysteriously "force 2wd" a few times without me knowing. Which makes it 2wd, even in 4low.

Did you set it up to run two wheel drive ? Or did it set itself up?

How do you know your front wheels stopped pulling? Is it possible that you lifted a front wheel and didn’t have your front lockers engaged? Do you force 2WD or something? This one is bizarre 🧐
