Trail Recon T-Case Failure

Shops like Dixie and Evo are pulling the guts from the normal part time trasfecase and putting them in to the JL392 transfer case to get rid of the clutches which have been failing when the front has traction and the rear doesn’t.
That’s awesome. I’m guessing they’d be able to perform the work after the clutch packs fail.

Has anyone’s failed twice so far?

i would say most of the failure's are due to beating the shit out of the jeep. come on we all know
people are just driving them like they stole them. I am not saying things don't break but this is not
jeeps first rodeo. does anyone know how many Track hawks or TRX's have failed Transfer cases.
basically the same set up. I say have fun, don't drive it like its a 5k xj and do the services and it will
last. just my opinion.

The transfer case was the weak point in the Trackhawk as well. I believe some of those actually cracked. There’s transfer case failures on the TRX as well. Some of which came from bad transfer case motors (lots of posts on the Ram-TRX forum about transfer case failures). I would agree that most of the failures are coming from hard use, but some just fail …either just a bad part or low fluid. Probably cheap insurance to just change the fluid early if you’re using the Jeep to its potential.

Mine happened at 3700 miles after wheeling for the first time (initial use of 4H part time and 4L). Have not beat my Jeep. YMMV.

Edit… and I ensured my fluid was topped off.

That mp3022 is in literally 100’s of thousand of grand cherokees. Not just the track hawk. I have it in my 2018 JGC with a 5.7 AND 90K miles.

Again failure is different from clutch wear. Clutch wear means that you cannot engage 4WD, works fine otherwise.. Failure is the binding and clunking just driving around in any 4WD setting.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but can assure you that I did not beat the shit out of my brand new $90k wrangler. Did I take it out on to some forest service roads? Sure. But no rock crawling or hard driving.

well that does suck, and i am sure not everyone is out of control. i have been lucky i guess. but only 3700
miles.

Here in Colorado, the snow is melting and more trails are opening up for another season of off-roading. I’m at 3k miles and 3 months into ownership and plan to hit the trails hard starting this weekend. Back in 2021, I did the same within weeks of taking ownership of my 21 Ford Bronco Badlands Sasquatch still with transit tags (purchased at Granger) and less than 1k on the ODO. I’m sure it’ll be fine but will admittedly be disappointed if the mighty 392 runs into issues.

My 392 Transfer Shifter is way easier to shift than my 2018 Sahara JL Selec-Trac...FWIW

Thought I would bring this back up since lots of people think the MP3022 is a weak link. Shaun from Story till Now channel killed his Rock Trac t-case in a recent video in his 6.4 JT. Seems even the bullet proof Rock Trac t-case will break behind a 6.4. Looks like an atlas is needed for the truly hardcore folks. When the Rock Trac died he was completely dead, the MP3022 left Brad in 2wd.

Wonder where exactly the Rock Trac failed at?

It is nice to know that the trail recon transfer case was replaced under warranty by the dealer with all of the modifications that Brad has made to his vehicle. Gives us others a bit of precedence.

Curious if they will ever do a recall involving the tcases, which is basically a 'when' it will happen issue.

Anyone have a generic idea of what an atlas transplant costs?

There will never be a recall for the t-case. There is nothing wrong with it…. It is doing what and how it is supposed to do things. There are 100’s of thousand of them on the road without issue.

posted elsewhere at around 5k plus installation

Someone asked above if they know of multiple failures on same vehicle. I know of one person who has had 3 fail in same jeep. He is going to an atlas on next failure. Everyone else I know who has had a failure has still only had the 1 fail.

Gonna be the same as the Dana 44 HD with Limited Slip (LSD)...they have had repeated failures over and over...no recalls only replacements...and depending on dealer as to whether they will be replaced...find a warranty friendly dealer for sure...

5 to 7k easy

Remember, the Atlas is certainly a stronger transfer case over stock, but it is noisy. You will hear gears moving.
I've had 4 different Atlas tc's. Two 2-spd and two 4-spd.
Had a 4spd failure, case split and then damaged gears. Atlas did warranty it, after build a wait.
