Synthetic oil change every 5k or 6mo?

One time I opened the hood to check, the tech left the oil fill cap in the engine bay...

At the risk of showing my ignorance, (surprise), why not just go with the owner's manual recommended oil type and duration for changes? Why the extra work of an oil analysis, various oil change methodology, whim and a prayer, etc.? Perhaps I chalk it up to people having their way of doing things, what their pops taught them as a kid, paranoia or just desire to go against the grain and a "I do what I want" mentality. At the end of the day, following the manual is a foolproof safe bet, is it not?

Personal preference I’d say. I follow the manual. No oil analysis, no oil catch can, no extra additives, and no other brands other than Pennzoil.

Some folks wanted to learn more from analysis report, it’s a research spirit.

Just different methods to enjoy this Jeep and be responsible. No better or worse.

For me, two things:

I wanted to have a long term documentation trail to track changes over time.

And.... growing up with the old change the oil every 3000 miles mantra, I wanted to verify that longer intervals were not too damaging. I didn't want to take the word of a company who would gladly sell me a new one when this one dies.

Makes sense, and very fair point. Having a better understanding of what's going on in the engine is never a bad thing.

The most common problem reported by oil analysis is excessive fuel dilution which usually leads to high piston wear. Recommend using a fuel additive like Red Line at each oil change to prevent fuel injector issues. Oil analysis, below, showed that the viscosity was okay on Pennzoil Ultra Platinum in our 392. Found much different results testing it in the TRX; wouldn't recommend it there, but should be okay in our 392s.

I use https://www.blackstone-labs.com/. They will send you collection containers and packaging/shipping materials. You fill up the little jar they send you while changing your oil and mail it to them. You can also send in your own container, but they don't charge you any less, so I use theirs to make it easy.

I use SPEEDiagnostix. The sample size is 3 oz. and is collected while the oil is draining (I believe @ ~15 sec. mark, IRCC). They provide you the sample collection container and a pre-paid return shipping box is included. Ideally you should use their sterile container to prevent any additional contamination.
