Recovery

OK, then. Here's my current load out. The blue and white lines are ones I made. I'm experimenting with the small stainless rings on some of them, which are from the sailing world. This lets me quickly make a loop or basket style connection. I also have some longer ones with loops spliced on both ends, which can be used to form choker, basket , or extensions.

I'm also still carrying some new shackles that came with my Yankum offset rings. And you can see in the recovery box there I Matt's Offroad kinetic rope.

Great stuff thanks for the pics👍👍

There's so much "just in case" stuff on the market from recovery to tools to parts that its a wonder some gotta-be-ready-for-everything scenario folks can even pack that necessity beer for those moments... I was one of those cats once who turned to critical, and minimal, packout only.... then T'up & figure it out if/when things go south.

When I sold our 05 LJR I was unpacking for ever we had so much stuff in there . Too much junk.tools, belts hoses trans oil , (not bud light) engine oil ,straps , chain to go around Rock just in case. Zip ties wire 3 gallons of water jackets blankets . Bullets . Chairs for eating lunch . Crazy
We have cut way back ..

On the lines of recovery, what winches are people using? Thinking of getting one soon and was wondering if the Warn VR Evo 12s is good enough for occasional use or if I should shell out for a Zeon. Or any other brands worth considering?

My use case will be 95% recovering other stuck vehicles unless I get a land anchor - no trees in the desert to self recover with a winch

I have the Evo 12s, because the Zeons were all sold out when I bought mine. I kind of wish I waited for the Zeon and I'll likely upgrade it one day to gain the remote clutch control feature.

The main reason is that I think by relocating the control box, I can get the cover plate for the winch cutout reinstalled to completely hide the winch, protecting it from prying eyes/water/dirt/mud and UV exposure.

I'd also like to find a cover for the fairlead to protect the end of the line. I can 3d print one, but I don't think it will look good or last long.

I have the Zeon 12-S; not the 12-S Platinum because cause I feel more comfortable with a hard link and have no use for the tech; to me it's just another potential failure point. In all reality, I know plenty of people that have the EVO line (10-S & 12-S), have had them for years, and don't have any issues with them. I am also in the 60% real load capacity mindset so IMO and dependent on the circumstance, I feel the 10-S is undersized for the 392 particularly if you start building it out (adding weight)... all that may be in my head, but it was a factor in me going with the 12K.

Go big or walk home. Good for you.I went with the 10 s . I would have gone 12k if we had more mud. I’m not a big mud fan . But I like bleeping Jeep mud runs very entertaining. Hand held remote for me too.👍

I agree with F55 fast fid, made re-splicing my winch line simple.

@guruman can you explain further what you did to your winch line? I like the idea of removing the F55 thimble I have now.

I also recommend Tactical Recovery Equipment. I have a snatch rope from them as well as a tree saver shackle, which is essentially a huge soft shackle that makes hooking up to a tree very simple.

OK, this is ugly, but hopefully you can glean enough info... (or just buy the Freedom line)

Yeah, so. Set out to emulate the Freedom winch line setup (pictured below).
https://bleepinjeep.com/product/freedomline/

It's a clever bit of rope/splice work. The line has a large stopknot on the end, and doubles back inside itself emerging a few times to form a hole for the end topknot to pass through, effectively forming a soft shackle of various sizes right on the end of the line.

Right now I just have a couple of the loops, as I did not like the way my stopknot looked sticking out the front of the fairlead. So I modified it to just be an end loop with some extra loops worked in at like 2 feet and again at 5 feet from the end. I could then just apply a soft shackle through any of the loops, or use the shackle to affix the end loop back to any of the other ones.

So essentially it's the Freedom line without the end knot, and I just use a shackle instead of relying on the end knot because I didn't like the knot sticking out in front.

Making the loops was pretty easy, I formed a locking Brummel on the end loop, ran the free end down inside the line until I wanted another loop to use, then poke it out to make the additional loop, then just modified the locking Brummel to "lock" both sides of the loops in the running line.

"Locking" the eyes in the running line was difficult, and if I had to do it again, I'm not sure I would. I'd lock the end loop, but just poke out the free end to make the extra loops, and leave a nice long bury to keep the free end line from pulling out.

Im familiar with his rope design. I like the idea of getting rid of any metal but not sure how useful the 2 foot and 5 foot loops are. A soft shackle is easy enough to grab and I dont think I want to put an expensive winch rope through more wear than it actually needs. I am going to do something to get rid of my F55 splicer. I actually wish I would have just left the metal loop on the winch line as I got it and just trashed the hook.

As for the original question, I carry one cheap Amazon 3 in 30 ft tow strap as kind of a sacrificial lamb and one industrial 3 inch 30 ft strap (not a brand sold by 4x4 stores). I also carry a Bubba snatch rope and 3 Bubba soft shackles. All stored in a tool box with other odds and ends so I can easily swap from Jeep to Jeep.

I’m running warn zeon 12s on both JLs no steel hooks or thimbles and older warn 10k lb winches front and rear of my JK both with synthetic lines no hooks no thimbles. I went with 12k winches on my JLs because I have seen the 10k winches struggle to pull out my JK 2 door on a straight line pull. I know a snatch block adds pulling power but I have been in a situation where I barely had enough line and straps just to reach an anchor point leaving a snatch block unusable. If Warn made a 14k winch in the same size as 12k I’d buy it.
