New 392 FE 170 Miles Suspected Transmission Oil Leak

All they will have to do is put a black light on it. ZF fluid has fluorescent die already embedded in it, that’s why it has a green hue to it. My initial leak was also dark like that and they suspected the Rear Main Engine Seal and replaced it. After the first clean up, it was green…but replacing the Rear Main didn’t fix the issue…So the next step was go to work on the trans itself. Again, a black light will tell if it is the Transmission ZF fluid.

I can't believe they just keep putting transmissions in the rig!! Converter has a leak so they replace the entire unit! Omg why didn't they just get a new converter? No wonder this company has financial issues. I have also seen front seals on transmissions, torque converter seal leak when new and stop after a few miles. This is just crazy.

Tell the to smoke test the engine to be sure it's not leaking. A machine forces smoke into the crank case and smoke will come out if it has a leak. If it's a leak in the oil pressure system then the smoke won't get in there, but back of oil pan or rear main seal it will. Also I have seen rear main seals leak one after another and what happens is on the OUTSIDE of the seal where it presses into the block there sometime can be a small scratch or casting flaw that can cause seal to leak there. I have fixed many through the years just by applying a small amount of sealer on the OUTSIDE of the seal where it installs into the block. Been doing this stuff for 36 years. I feel bad you are dealing with this, I could find the leak I promise you that!

They did initially replace just the Converter after replacing the Engine Rear Main which was not it. The transmission still leaked after the Converter replacement. They then replaced the entire Transmission assembly which comes with the new Converter installed. After its replacement, it still leaked up until now 700 miles later. It just has a little drop forming, but hasn't done that for a week now. So maybe it's on its way to stopping...

Again, as I stated before, this is a systemic issue as two of the other three FE units they got in has the same drop on the passenger side lug of the Bell Housing support. Most people don't notice, don't want to go to the dealer, or just don't care; and seems to maybe stop after some miles?

So after Transmission coming out three times, rear main, Torque Converter and pump seal, and then finally a new Transmission, the results were the same. I will say however, that the leak I had was never that much fluid. I would wipe off and monitor at this point as it seems to be ALL of the later 2024s even though not many acknowledged it, know about it, or just don't care...

I have now driven about 700 miles since the Transmission replacement and the leak seems to be getting better, sometimes hundreds of miles without a trace. The latest was a small drop about a week ago, nothing since. Unsure at this point, but I will drive it for a while and keep this post updated.

I will add this, because of the issue, Jeep has made me whole in a sense that I am not allowed to legally discuss. If I were you, I would contact Jeep cares and open a case. I can say that I won't have to worry about anything on this jeep for the next 8 years if you know what I mean plus there was some "pain and suffering" that was also addressed. They stepped up...

Thanks for your reply - Last night wiped the leaking fluid again and did notice any new droplets this morning. Unfortunately, today after a 4 mile drive, we pulled into our driveway and noticed smoke coming from the Jeep. We quickly exited the 392 Rubicon 2024 Final Edition. We looked under the vehicle and witnessed Transmission Fluid pouring out from under the vehicle! UNBELIEVABLE - Brand new vehicle with 853 miles and puked all its transmission fluid ! My guess is nearly all the Transmission poured out. We will get it towed to the dealer and contact Jeep on this for sure.

I had an issue where one on of the transmission fluid lines wasn't properly seated into the quick-connect fitting on the transmission cooler. It made a hell of a mess.

You might take a look there to see if you have a similar issue. I was able to reseat the line properly, but did end up doing a transmission service/flush. My local dealers were 4+ weeks out for a new appt.

Maybe it's the lighting but that actually looks like the pink coolant and not transmission fluid...ZF Transmission Fluid has a greenish hue to it as it has fluorescent die in it.

On pike392 that's coolant. The drips on the line would be different if it was Trans fluid ZF or even the old stuff.

You are correct! After closer review I believe it is the Coolant ... Not happy about the coolant pouring out but hopefully an easier fix. Thanks

Yes, most likely a loose line or something simple. Not a transmission. Looks worse because of the volume, but definable not as big a job as a transmission replacement.

Here is an update: ... The Jeep 392 was towed to the dealer. The Same day they confirmed the fluid pouring out was Radiator fluid (Thanks guys) and was due to a hose that was not crimp connected at all and came loose. As far as the "oil" drops under the Jeep, I looked under a New Jeep 392 on the dealer lot and it also had oil drops (see pic). The new jeep also had one more bolt on the converter cover than my Jeep (compare pics attached) They are ordering (LOL) the bolt for my Jeep .. The veteran dealer technician said to keep a watch on the oil droplets, but he did believe this would go away as the vehicle was driven more (??).

There are a lot of stories in this thread that state it will go away eventually. I don’t know if I will pursue anymore repairs myself until I have driven it more…nothing to lose as it’s still under warranty…I have driven 750 miles since my last transmission replacement and only encountered a drop or two once or twice, sometimes a week apart…I will keep updating too…

Your Dealer is clueless and that’s complete BS - They are not being honest.
That’s the same leak that many have been experiencing with the 2024.

I have had the same issue you have in which they removed, repaired and eventually replaced my transmission 3 times. It is an anomaly with the at least all of the 2024 392 FEs and the ZF Transmission because each time the dealer removed and reinstalled my transmission troubleshooting, it dripped again when they were done. All three of my dealers 392 FE's on the lot had the same drip. Now after the last new transmission replacement, it stopped after 1500 miles of driving even though the new transmission also dripped when replaced. It was not oil coating on a part, it was ZF Transmission fluid as it will slowly get clearer with a green hue. It will glow with a black light. The drip, after cleaning several times, will eventually just hang off of the R/H Lug of the transmission lower Bell Housing until it stops because that is the lowest part of the transmission Support Cover.

My advice from all my drama is to clean it off a few times and wait till about 2500 miles. It should stop...I will say that because of this, Jeep Cares gave me a Max Care 8 year 85000 zero deductible warranty for free, and also and other considertion$ as my Jeep was in and out of the shop until I finally stopped going. They, (STAR Team) did not say it was an anomaly or anything, but that the Transmission needed to be replaced. I almost traded it until I saw it was a "thing", an anomaly, and it eventually stopped. Not a good thing for someone with OCD, lol... There are others that responded to my post with the same issue that has stopped.

It's a "thing", but not a "thing", according to the STAR Team at Jeep...lol
