My first ever oil change and takeaways

@Fast&Furious where did you buy Pennzoil? I guess you must have scored a pretty nice deal since you've purchased 30qts?
It was back in May when I got them from Amazon as shown in the pic, and I just checked currently it's $51.90. So I got a deal I'd say. Still cheaper than the local dealer who wants $12 per bottle.

Thanks @Fast&Furious & @Electrified ! I was going to use a free oil change at the dealer, but after reading about bad experience with dealerships I've changed my mind and will be doing it myself :)

I would consider having them do mine if I could stand next to the guy and watch and verify oil type used. Guessing that wouldn't be an allowed option.

It was my 1st time to change oil as you read my original post. Get the oil/filter and tools ready and take your time to do it. All you get at the end is a peace of mind and a sense of accomplishment. I never trusted the 10 minute oil change at those shops... It toke me over 25 minutes to just drain up the hot oil completely. There was a very tiny bit of oil accumulated the first day after my oil change and I paid close attention to monitor. Nothing else since then and I'm happy with my experience. Time well spent on thing you care and love. And you know exactly all the details.

I know many here are worried about not using Mopar oil filters but here is this:

I bought a case of them and they fit perfect.

Do the bigger filters get in the way if you off road?
I can’t say on my own vehicle because up to this point, Opie has been a pavement princess. I have not heard of anyone else reporting interference yet.

Our son is a ~20 year, BMW Master Tech/Shop Supervisor. He says they usually give oil changes to their newest, part time and/or unskilled guys because the true Tech’s are too busy with other work. So, often, you may get “Joe Newguy” doing an oil change. Maybe not the best or most professional guys in any shop, even for the simple jobs!

They’re still tucked in there pretty tight.
I’ve been off road with a lot of articulation (sway bar unlocked) and experienced no issues.

You get 3 free oil changes and tire rotations, why not use them?
Depends how much you trust them. They have proven to me not worthy of that trust. Performed the fastest cheapest way possible. No thanks. I now do all of my vehicles myself (even though from a financial standpoint it makes zero sense).

Did my first oil change at 2500 miles today, couldn’t get a SRT filter or Wix equivalent so I ended up with the stock filter. Should be sufficient for now. I checked my J&L oil separator and after only about 500 miles since installation it had a surprisingly large amount of oil in it. Picture below is the oil I dumped out into the plastic cap that comes on a grease cartridge and almost filled it. I also noticed that the return line from the oil separator was basically just resting on the fitting at the throttle body and not fully seated. I installed it as directed and ran the return line around the rear of the engine cover then to the throttle body. I think it was too tight and between the tension, heat and vibration it worked itself loose. So I rerouted it across the top of the engine instead of behind it. Lastly the plastic deflector around the oil filter was missing on my Jeep.🤔 other than that just a normal oil change.

I’m actually going to be emptying my J&L catch can you tonight as I’m going off-roading tomorrow. I’ve read when articulating at steep angles it could cause the oil in the can to all flow back into the cylinders and cause hydro lock. Not sure if that’s 100% true or not but I’d rather not take a chance. I installed the can about 1,500 miles ago, curious how much is in there now.

As a follow up, got about a half inch of sludge in a mason jar out of the can. Smells like straight gasoline. Not sure what that means, if anything lol.

Thats why I dont fly anymore. Guy goes to work and is in a fight with his wife/gf over some stupid shit that woman like to make a big deal over and he gets a text message that pisses him off so much he forgets to torque a bolt or something and thats the plane you see on the documentary 5 years later where the engine for no apparent reason came off the plane and fell to the ground as did the plane.

the average American today is stuck on stupid due to that cell phone.

people dont even know where they work, call and ask are you all located east or west of 95. I dont know i just followed the little line on the phone and listened to the bitch in a box and here i am.

Ive been doing my own oil changes on all my vehicles for the past 20+ years and use nothing but Amsoil products including their extended life (25K miles) filters, gear, steering, and brake fluids. for the past ~15 years I've also been sending my oil samples to Blackstone Laboratories for periodic analysis. I have a 2006 Silverado 2500HD daily driver that I tow a 13K+ trailer approx. 4K miles a year that they continue to report, in surprise, how little engine wear I'm experiencing even after 180K+ miles even though I typically do changes between ~12,500 miles and always have even though the manual says 7,500 thanks to the science.

The purpose of the tests initially on a vehicle for me is to confirm how many miles, based on my style of driving and conditions, I can go before I need a change. After the initial, I send in for analysis every other to confirm the engine is wearing at a healthy rate and to determine if I need to modify my intervals.

I've typically installed a Fumoto valve to make taking samples quick/painless but because the underside of the 392 makes the valve, even with the steel pan, low hanging fruit I will NOT install one until I get belly skids/protection. This of course isnt a huge problem/show stopper though because I can still use my Holt extraction system where I can pull an oil sample from the dipstick tube... just requires more cleanup.

For me personally, I like using science/analysis to tell me how well my oil and engine are doing and react accordingly. I hope this info/approach helps many of you to reduce the stress, fear, or questions one has about how healthy their oil and or engine are... Check out BL cuz they're worth every penny! And NO, Im NOT affiliated with them in any way shape or form just a long time loyal customer.

My first oil change when my 2012 Ram 2500 6.7l was new... Drive back home was 30 miles. About half way, I heard/felt what sounded like a small explosion, them smoke out the rear. I pulled off the road immediately, but engine shut down before I could get it shut off. Turns out the mechanic (I use that term loosely) forgot to tighten the oil drain plug. All engine oil blew out when plug fell out. Froze/ruined engine. Dealer wanted to repair/rebuild the new engine. I refused and after a lengthy battle, the truck was replace with a new truck Ram 3500. I paid minor up-charge for different model, could find a exact replacement.
However I did loose out on labor charge to remove aftermarket stereo system I had installed.

I’m just gonna do oil changes myself I can’t help myself I like to make 100% that it’s done right. If the dealer is doing it great 95% of the time i don’t want to be that screwed up 5% day. I removed the plastic drip thing around the filter housing also and used SRT 041 filter and this oil i researched to be one of the best Liqui Moly 0W-40.
