1st Oil Change

Just link the 392 oil change post I found on the JL forum to here as I prepare for the upcoming 1st oil change: https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/fo...opars-alternate-oil-filter-for-the-6-4.72938/
Still haven't decided if I'll let the dealer do this or by myself, but I do want to use the SRT 041 filter (889 as the second option) and I found Mobil 1 0w-40 in BJ's for $39 (6 qts), so I'm definitely on the fence.

I picked up this AMSOIL EA011 Filter for my 18' Challenger 392. Haven't changed my oil yet, so I'd figure I'd save it for the Wrangler 392's first oil change instead. It's pretty beefy and seems well built. Not sure if it will fit the wrangler or not... dimensions are 3.626" wide overall, 2.75" o-ring OD, and about 3.5" tall.

I’ve considered the remote bypass set up.
Had that on my Dodge Ram & Land Rover. I liked it. Particularly with the ability to run a very large filter, adding an additional quart.

After reading another thread: https://www.hellcat.org/threads/mo-041-quality-control.220287/ Im kinda leaning towards the MO-899 and it’s widely available too.

that is what I do. If you remove the the plastic drain thingy around the filter housing the 899 is a breeze to install.
Are you referring to that hose in the picture?

If you are considering the mopar 899, I highly recommend the wix 57899xp. It is the same size as the 899 and much better internal design. I cut a bunch of oil filters apart and made a video of it. Couldn't get a mopar 041 to dissect.

I will add that some have raised concerns about the 899 gasket being bigger and oil filter landing being tapered. When I did my 1st change with 899, I had read on other forums that people had used it, they looked the same size to me (gaskets). I didn't inspect the oil filter landing that closely or measure anything with a micrometer. I've had no problems. I have not read any reports of anyone having problems with the 899 on the 6.4 so I think they are safe to use and that is what I went with as it is a larger filter. Next change will be with the wix 57899xp.

No, its the round black plastic shield towards the front of the vehicle, seen on the right side of the filter in that picture.

Yesterday I finally decided to do the oil change by myself and ordered 5 cases of this Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Full Synthetic 0W-40 on Amazon, great deal. This should be good for 4 times of oil change if I'm supposed to refill 7-7.5 quart each time.

Now I still have to finalize the oil filter, the MO-899 is the OEM filter and the parts manager said they are using it on the 392 and hellcat, so I'll probably get 4 of this even though they may not be the best design/quality, at least better then the small MO-339.

Question for you guys who already did the change, it seems the 93mm 15 Flute filter wrench should fit the MO-899, do I really have to remove that black plastic shield/drain thingy in order to fit the wrench? And what type of wrench would work best you think? The swivel or the cap wrench? And do I need any extension or just a 3/8 or 1/2 ratchet would do the job?

No you don’t “need” to remove the “thingy”. Just gives more room and it serves no purpose. But try it and decide. The 93/15 wrench is best, no hassle at all plenty of room etc, no comparison to the swivel friction wrench. No extension required.

Last heads up, there is internet rumor that the 899 can contact the track bar. I have not seen that, but I just missed running the king of hammers last time :ROFLMAO: and so I have not seen a problem. But I try to give all info to my fellow forum members.

Thanks a lot for the answers! I've never done oil change myself on vehicles in the past, only did oil change on my mower, snowblower, and pressure washer. I'm trying to get all pieces prepared for my first 392 oil change and hoping for no surprises on the day of job.

Glad you are going to do it yourself! I often tell people they wouldn’t just let their neighbors high school age kids change their oil? But that is exactly who is doing it at a dealer….

To be honest, it's not a very easy decision for me. I had wanted to do it on my own before I took ownership of the 392. And when I told the salesman (good guy at a reputable small local jeep dealer) I plan, he said I'd have to buy the oil and filter from them. I even talked to another guy who works at a larger jeep dealer's parts department, and he suggested to still use the Jeep Wave free oil change to avoid any warranty issue. So I was on the fence for a while. As I keep reading bad experiences/horrible oil change stories on the JL forum, I told myself there's no way I'll have a peace of mind if getting it done at the dealer. I always take pride of my work around the house and my tools/toys with paying attention to details and doing such things make me feel good too.

it amazes me that dealers still pull that stuff With social media and all. The magnuson moss act has been around a long time at it is very clear. If they require something to maintain a warranty they must provide it for free….

Yes, I have knows this for a long time also. But, the first three oil changes ARE free on our Jeeps. I did my own also, for the same reasons as other have stated. I have a friend who's a mechanic and has worked for many dealers. The stories are scary, some RECALS were not actually performed at one dealer with parts thrown in the trash.

ALL oil changes would have to be free. Same thing if they required a specific filter and oil, must be free. That is why some vehicles come with complementary maintenance. It is a financial decision for a manufacturer.

I just recently read the reason for the smaller filter was due to the contact of a return line. Can’t recall which fluid thogh. AT, Engine oil?
Either way, I did notice this when I put on the larger filter and considered either extending that line and moving it, or making a heat shield for it.
I considered making a custom aluminum shield to fit the filter and act as a heat sink and a suspended contact point for the hose in question.

Forgot to ask, did you need another oil filter wrench to uninstall the smaller factory filter?

you should be able to spin it off by hand.
