SoCal 392 Squad

392 in Burbank here. Had this rig over a year now. I don't see any others in my area but wouldn't be surprised if there's a few.

There is a car show every Saturday “cars and Coffee” in San Clemente,

I’ll be there this Saturday, be there by 8:30 AM or it fills up and you have to park in a different lot,
There was 2 of us there this past weekend, let’s have a showing.

I’ll be there at 8:15 and I will park in the underground parking structure till 8:30 when ,… if there is a group of us we can follow each other in and park together.

Hope to see you all there:)!
I should be able to make it, nothing in the works this weekend. On a side note after 1 year of only seeing 1 other 392 on the road, last Thursday I saw 2 in less than 10 mins, A black one east bound from the 5 fwy on Ortega and a hydro blue east bound on Avery under the 5 fwy overpass.

Dang it, wish I had mine! I'll have to catch you guys next month :) 🤞🤞

I'm excited to be joining your So Cal group in a few months and I wanted to reach out for some advice. I ordered a new 392 from Grangers at the end of December, and after 67 days, it has moved to D1 status. I'm anticipating another 2-3 month wait before it's ready for pickup. In the meantime, I'm starting to look into the logistics of shipping it back to LA and doing the DMV registration.

I read on this thread where @dog and @Stealth7 both ordered from Grangers so I was hoping one of you could help answer a few questions I have:

1) Were you able to have the California tax added to your loan, or did you have to pay it as a lump sum to the DMV?

2) How did the title registration process work for you?

3) Did Granger help with this process?

4) Did you have to do a smog check?

5) @Stealth7, how far in advance did you schedule your shipping company? Who did you end up using, and would you recommend them?

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Manhattan Beach here. There’s at least 2 others in a 4 block radius from me. I might be the only one who actually wheels though.

HOLD IT! Another South Bay 392? I was beginning to think I was the only one! And while I haven't wheeled much the last couple years, I consider myself a wheeler :) Supposed to take her out to Anza Borrego this weekend!

I know the MBCC when I see it! I'm pretty sure I saw you on Artesia near Costa a little while back. I was in the Sarge heading west, you east, we waved, it was love at first sight... wait, what were we talking about again? Or, maybe it was someone else, haha.

Can't believe you've seen 4 around you, I feel like I haven't seen many at all. Amped to have you here in the forum!

Lol! I think I recall that encounter. I was taking my daughter to costa for water polo practice.

Make that 3 x 392’s I’ve seen in my area.

Let’s connect sometime. I’ve had this 392 since November and have been getting it ready for trail duty. It’s actually at South Bay 4x4 as we speak getting some Artec skids put on. It’s almost ready to go.

Maybe you saw my JK driving around as well!

Hey @shoshin - happy to field these!
  1. Yes, Granger can certainly add the tax to your loan and cut you a check (and send it with your title). When you go to the CA DMV, you'll just pay a lump sum either way. Nothing quite like an 8k DMV day.
    • BE AWARE - if you pay with a debit/credit card at DMV, they charge a 2% fee without even asking you about it. If I had just cut a check it would have saved $160, but instead I didn't notice the extra CC fee until I was already home. I'm an idiot. Don't be like me.
  2. I got temp registration when I paid taxes, and they gave me the smog paperwork to go get it smogged, then I had to go BACK to the DMV to give them smog report, then they will register your vehicle, and they'll send the *real* title to your bank.
    • NOTE: If you're nice to the DMV person, they might tell you you can just come back in an hour (after smog) and cut the line, and bring it straight to them. Always be nice to the DMV people.
    • NOTE: If you have a cosigner, you'll need the cosigner's signature on your title application AS WELL as yours. Don't skip that.
  3. Granger is super helpful, but they can't do the registration for you. They'll give you everything you need from them to get it home and take it to the DMV.

  4. Yes you need to smog a brand new vehicle when you bring it in from out of state, even though it's new and has "CA-Approved Smog" on the sticker. Dumb, I know.

Best advice I have is talk to the finance department. Catelyn was fantastic to work with. The Granger finance person will walk you through everything finance related (like cutting checks for tax, etc).

This was my JK and I was all around town in it daily for the past 8 years or so. I lived in TX and NM for a few years before that, but I grew up here. Would definitely be cool to connect! I live right over by Costa, so we're bound to cross paths either way. I even went to Costa myself many moons ago. The goal now is to continue to be able to afford to live where I grew up, which is no small feat as you well know!

Your JK looks familiar too! There just aren't that many jeeps around that look like they've seen a trail, so I tend to look out for them. Then again, I'll likely keep the 392XR relatively stock for awhile until I'm ready to give up warranty, so for now, I'm an undercover wheeler, haha.

You also need a Vin verification when you bring a car into California, done through either the DMV, or a private registration service.

Good flag! At my local DMV, they did this outside in the same lane where the new drivers take off for their driving tests. I got it done during my first visit.

Long Beach here.
Heres a throwback from last June. Big Sur - Kirk Creek Campground.
Only added MC skid plates and 3 hoop bull bar since.

I agree with all of the foregoing answers. Granger was very helpful and the process was smooth. I needed to pay taxes at California DMV, have a VIN check and provide a smog certificate – I use the one hour to go somewhere local but you can probably bring a current smog certificate with the car just tell the technician that you are doing this for registration at DMV of an out-of-state car and for the technician to provide any applicable form).

Do not know about adding taxes to a loan as I just paid for my 392.

Most of the transport people are crooks and pirates (multilevel broker pimps and you have little or no contact with the actual transporter); I transported two cars within three months from the East Coast to Southern California. I have no recommendations. The "luxury" closed transport that delivered my six-figure sports car had soft canvas sides, slings suspending the cars and looked like something out of the original Mad Max movie. You are talking about multilevel pimping and unless you pay enormous fees. I sent the 392 by open transport and it was really fine. Have Granger activate the location function on the Jeep and Key it to your phone before the vehicle is transported so you can track it. I enjoy driving my 392 every day!

@Stealth7, How far in advance did you reach out to the shipping company? A few days in advance or way earlier? Again thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!!
