I just came across this thread and I am so glad I did. My wife and daughter and I are looking forward to going camping in our jeep Wrangler this year.
Absolutely love the 392 and I think it is the best jeep ever made.
My question is for those of you who have been camping in your 392 What were the essentials that you needed to begin with? And any advice you have I would greatly appreciate it . Its just gonna be me my wife and my seven-year-old daughter For our first camping trip .
it’s just gonna be staying at a campground for the weekend. I do want to feel prepared and more than anything. I want them to enjoy it.
I believe I found a good mattress to put in the back of the jeep and also a tent that attaches to the back for some extra room. It looks like it’s gonna cost around $450 or so to get both of those. Which is fine because I know how important that is.
Other then the mattress and the attached tent, , what would you recommend I look into before we take our first camping trip. it’ll be just a weekend leisure trip so we won’t be going up into the mountains or anything.
So if anyone could help me with the essentials that I need to go camping in my 392 I would greatly appreciate it !, Thank you for this fourm and this website ! I hope to hear back from some of you..

We decided that we needed more room for my wife and I and our two dogs. I ended up building a small overlanding trailer last summer for our month-long Wyoming trip. It worked out well for camping in the boonies, but we've decided we need something better/bigger for our extended stays.I just came across this thread and I am so glad I did. I'm looking to sell my overland setup. I think I want to buy a 4 door rollback truck. I can load the Jeep onto the rollback, and tow a big enough camper to live out of for a couple of months at a time.
Getting enough gear and sleeping space in a 392 for three people will be challenging. you cannot really do a rear seat delete, because you still need the rear seat, and if you are sleeping in the Jeep, you cannot really do a complete storage drawer system in the cargo area.
I think what you are doing is about all you can do without adding a trailer or a rack and rooftop tent.
Here's my current setup.
Went to visit some friends up in my old stomping grounds and took them up to Bald Mt lookout, second time crawling in the 392. Need to get the lift on and some more protection underneath ! Make sure you watch it on You Tube or if you are going to watch it here change the resolution to HD as the default on this site is Low res 360...
Fun day yesterday exploring the trails of Bald Eagle State Forest and Poe Valley in central PA with my buddy (the red Willy’s), capped off with a visit to Penn's View where I got my 392 of the month winning shot last year.
Early morning solo run down Paddy Mountain Road in Bald Eagle State Forest in central PA. Fun rocky trail about 4 miles long. While rated as a blue trail on OnX, and there are some bigger ruts / rocks, it’s probably more equivalent to a green trail at Rausch or AOAA.

I had a small misadventure… but a friend got it on video. See Red Cone Fail. Here is a teaser picture. Happened on Handcart between the last two switchbacks…. Totally my fault for not staying closer to the mountain and the road gave out…

Walked away with a good story at least… cool pic by the way even with the pucker it likely caused.
All of us skirting the line are going to risk dangling over it at some point; part of the alure of adventure.... post the video or links... ditto on awesome shot.

It was like dropping into powder on a ski slope. The slope was somewhere between 35 to 40 degrees and I couldn’t steer until I hit the grassy area! GPS on my dash cam maxed out at 8 mph.

Update:
We did the full day on the Arkansas through the Royal Gorge, it was a blast. Water level was low (864ft3/s) so made it a much more technical raft, but a Class IV is still a Class IV. Lost my better half off the back of the raft at Sledgehammer which was an interesting 20-some seconds and despite some bruises all ended well.
No major wheeling on this trip. We just did Shelf Road up to Cripple Creek then back Phantom Canyon Rd, and a handful of other backcountry trails up Hwy50 and around Canon City. We shot up towards Colorado Springs and hit Pike's Peak since we were so close and I had never been up to a +14'er.
The entire trip was going great... until the ride home. We had just got through the OK panhandle at Woodward when I stopped for gas and smelled burning rubber. Popped the hood and knew the trip was over... Glad it didn't happen in the +100mi of nothing in Kansas
Big shout out to Vernon at McIntosh Towing in Woodward who didn't hesitate to make the 328mi tow at 4:30pm on a Sunday afternoon (unlike a few others) and the dudes in O'Reilly for letting my crew camp out in their store to stay out of the 100deg heat. The rig is at my local dealer now. Yes, I could have stayed in Woodward and hit their Jeep dealer the next day, but given the size of the town I would have likely been stuck there for several days and I'm not certain it's only the alternator; so I made the call to sleep in my own bed and have her carried home.

Jeep has been in the shop since the tow home and the alternator has apparently been on backorder; just received an 8/9 eta date for the dealer to receive it. They are also going to be pressure testing/inspecting the EVAP system due to severe gas fumes in the cab going up to Pikes Peak... so I'm likely out of commish for a couple weeks at best assuming the alternator is the only thing jacked up.
19K/mi on her... got a case# through Jeep and a hefty tow bill to push to them.
I might’ve left some brown stains on the seat if that was me
