Pulled over with Borla ATAK exhaust

Agreed… the tuned / engineered systems from Borla, Corsa, magnalfow etc that retain the valves all seem to be pretty well done.
I do like the sound of the stock system. Pipes are usually in rumble mode better low end 🤣

I liked it too. It is really well done from the factory as far as sound. I honestly hated the look of the giant trash can muffler and afterthought exhaust tips. The Borla sounds and also looks great.

Yea🥺💰I rotated the tips up a bit see how long they last

Wow, you guys are beginning to sound like a Harley forum with the comments about loudness of exhaust and being a douche. I have 2 Harleys and the touring bike still runs stock exhaust. The Heritage is built as a hotrod, so has aftermarket pipes WITH baffles. I'm still waiting on my 392, but I can see maybe going aftermarket on it and letting my '23 Pentastar remain stock. Will have to live with the stock exhaust before making any decisions. The 392 sounds pretty gnarly stock.

Hi all,
I am a California resident and was recently pulled over for “loud exhaust.” I have a Borla ATAK system and I’m concerned that my 392 won’t pass the decibel testing…
Anyone else run into this?
Thoughts?
Question for you - im thinking of installing an aftermarket exhaust system on my ‘22 392XR. Either a Borla ATAK or an AWE. Aside from this CA noise issue you were having, do you like the Borla ATAK system? Would you recommend it? Anything about it you don’t like? Is the idling and local driving exhaust note substantially different than with the stock exhaust? Thank you in advance for any info you can share.

He hasn’t posted / been active in a month so you maybe waiting a minute on a response from him or California has deemed his typing about Borla too offensive.

I run the Borla Atak. I think it was my first modification since new and I’ve had it installed for almost 2 years.. It’s louder than stock but not obnoxious. If you’re just cruising around you don’t really notice too much of a difference. It’s a deeper rumble and it’ll burble and pop more if you manually downshift. You can carry on a conversation, listen to music etc without being annoyed. WOT it is substantially deeper / louder over the stock system.

If I’m on a long drive, or I take a phone call, I tend to put it in quiet mode. I did the same with the factory system, mostly because I’m old. Quiet mode is slightly louder than the factory system in the same mode. In that mode it sounds like any other V8 Hemi powered vehicle.

If you want a slight improvement in sound over stock go with the S Type over the Atak. I don’t believe it’s nearly as loud as the Atak at WOT. Another member on here ended up adding resonators from the S Type because they found the Atak to be too loud for their taste.

The biggest downside with any Borla system is you have to remove the existing valves from the factory system and swap them over. I found that to be a bit ridiculous for the price point. I believe AWE supplies their own / new replacement valves with their system. Just food for thought.

I literally keep my stock one on standby for inspections....it will never pass even on the quiet mode...It sounds great in the sandbox however. I am actually switching to Magnaflow now mainly because the parts are easy to maintain, valves, catalytic, etc, whereas Borla relies on stock parts and is expensive to replace.

Maybe I'm just not looking at the right thing, but the exhaust that Magnaflow have on their site for the 392 does not have any valves, so it's just permanent loud mode.

The magnaflow system you’re speaking of is called the rock crawler. It has no muffler at all in the back. It has four small mufflers up near the catalytic converters. They also make a system that does have the valves for a quiet and loud mode.

I have the Rockcrawler system on my vehicle and like it a lot. There is nothing better for rock crawling in my opinion and it is acceptably loud. The CHP might sit somebody for it, but I also saved my stock system just in case.

You need the 392, MF exhaust set up, it has the valves, it’s also much more expensive 🤣

This is what I have replaced the Borla with and its items. Valves included. Cost is about $4000 USD

I miss the thunder of the Borla attak but on the streets its loud even in the off mode when you hit the throttle. The noise ticket in dubai I paid was a little over 600 USD. In the sandbox no issues ahahah

I'm using an AWE exhaust on my 392. Quiet mode sounds perfect if you ask me. Loud mode is too loud for all day highway driving and can even be a little obnoxious around town. For offroad use loud mode is perfect. I bought the AWE exhaust because of the higher clearance after having smashed the stock exhaust 4 times and restraightening it 3 times. Even with the high clearance of the AWE exhaust it is not invulnerable though. On the Rubicon last year, I totally squashed the stock exhaust. That was when I bought the AWE exhaust. This year on the Rubicon I still managed to slam the AWE exhaust hard. With the higher clearance and the much tougher exhaust tips I looked like the outside tip on the right-hand side was just very minimally egg shaped. You had to look at it just right to even see it, so I was happy with that. But after that impact the valves were stuck in loud mode. It turns out that the exhaust tips flexed upward, and the actuator arm for the valve on the right side was bent, and that also cut the vacuum line. I ended up driving it for a month, including a long trip to Moab, before I had time to straighten the actuator arm and replace the vacuum line. I started getting pretty fed up with the noise and was thinking of changing exhaust systems. All is well now though.

But that brings me to my question. Changing to an exhaust system that doesn't even have valves might be a good thing. It looks like the tail pipe clearance for the Magnaflow rock crawler system is equal the AWE. Does anyone know the noise level of the Magnaflow rock crawler exhaust relative to an AWE exhaust on either quiet or loud mode? If it isn't as loud as the AWE on loud mode it would be worth considering.

Sorry to hear you got fined!
Did you face any issues when passing the yearly inspection with borla system? Even in quiet mode?
