Fuel Storage - Aux Fuel

How do you like that setup
My only concern is a flat tire. I guess you could then just strap it on your buddy’s jeep
Sorry for the late reply, we were at Joshua Tree National Park. The set up works well and I agree with the above post. If you have a flat tire I think you can tighten the strap tighter around the flat spare and have no problem.

No problem thanks good to know. I was hoping Tera flex would make a clean bracket that would bolt on to their tire carrier it has 4 bolt hole locations that would be perfect. I know they have a high lift Jack mount and then bolt up a roto pac to that but that setup is not for me

Resurrecting this old thread as I’m seriously considering the Long Range America 17 gal auxiliary tank. I’ve received three quotes from upfitters who are listed on the LRA website as dealers. One is $4500, second is $5500, and the third is $6300. All bids include the tank, needed exhaust modifications, and labor to install. I’m trying to understand why there’s such a large difference between the quotes. All three shops seem like good folks and have a lot of positive online reviews. Has anyone else had one of these installed? If so, care to share your experience with the shop that did the work and what it cost?

Over thinking this guy's, just strap 2 3 gallon cans on the spare and away you go. 60 miles of spare fuel will get you out of about anywhere. The 392 is ridiculous of fuel, in moab my average around town and doing poison spider was 8.0 mpg on 40's, it was about same on the 37's. I would not try the 3 trail loop of poison spider, golden spike and gold bar rim without bringing spare fuel.

I really like the idea of the long ranger fuel tank and Im not surprised at the price variations. Much better than extra fuel in cans.

I will most likely end up doing this

I ended up doing this 😂

Ended up going this route

I just found this which was interesting. Its something out of Hong Kong China, not sure if this is something worthwhile or not. Looks like Long Range America copy of sorts, but specific for the 392, with exhaust etc.

Adds ~14 Gallons, no details on fill up and transfer like LRA, but may be worth the investigation for some.

While I do like LR system I dont feel like I need 17 more gallons. I have always thought I would be happy to have 10 or so and a simpler install. I will have to take a look.

Thanks for the link. It looks like it’s worth further investigation. Hopefully shipping, taxes, and tariffs don’t create more sticker shock.

ETA: I entered my address and “sea shipping” added only $300 to the total. I’m still not sure if tariffs and taxes are included in the original posted $3k price.

It appears to have a heat shield attached to the exhaust side of the tank. And their exhaust system pieces come pre-wrapped with heat fabric for an additional layer of protection. They also keep the dual pipe setup by stacking the pipes vs a 2 into 1 into 2 system that folks with the LRA tank seem to be using.

I sent an email note to the fine folks at BP4wd in China and asked about fuel transfer, filling, tariffs, etc.
I’ll report back with their response.

Would be great to understand how this works, let us know.

I'm a curious cat and like to know the options available and how things work.

I agree with your comments, I'm still interested to see if it is a viable option.

I just added some door tanks from Amazon (Sheam Door Hinge Tanks). They give me a 1/4 tank to get to the next station. Still warming up to them, but serves the purpose.

For longer trips I use Giant Loop Armadillo Fuel Bladders. They strap to the roof rack, and when done they fold up nicely and pack away.

Here’s what they’ve sent so far. It sounds like it operates the same as the LRA tank. They sent the installation instructions, but they were in Chinese.

1. How is the tank filled?
The auxiliary fuel tank is filled through the original fuel filler hole. The internal system splits into two separate fuel pathways, allowing both the main and auxiliary tanks to be filled simultaneously at the same fueling point.
2. How does the fuel get used?
The auxiliary tank does not directly supply the engine. Instead, it includes a dedicated, standalone fuel pump with a manual switch. When activated, this pump transfers fuel from the auxiliary tank to the main tank. The flow is one-directional and does not allow fuel to return to the auxiliary tank.
3. Is there a fuel level gauge for the auxiliary tank?
Yes, the manual switch for the auxiliary fuel pump includes a simple fuel level indicator, allowing you to monitor the amount of fuel in the auxiliary tank.
4. Is there an automatic shutoff?
There is no automatic shutoff feature. The transfer process is manually controlled via the switch. We recommend turning off the pump once the indicator shows that the auxiliary tank is empty to avoid running the pump dry.

They also have an Instagram video that explains the tank.

The bottom line cost is $2,999 plus $430 for shipping to my doorstep.
I received the install instructions in English. They’ve been pretty responsive to any questions I posed.
It looks like a well thought out piece of kit. I’m not ready to pull the trigger yet though.

This is pretty compelling for me.... I think I'll add it to my winter list. Too many irons in the fire right now, but when things slow down, I think I might need this.

I think I may have discovered a potential issue with the bp4wd tank. Their tank is made of aluminum. I’m reading some aluminum doesn’t work well with ethanol blended fuels. I’ve sent them another email asking about this.
The LRA tank is made from aluminized steel.
