Exhaust Drone

I just picked up my Moab and drove about 150 miles home.

The drone is crazy at or under 2,000 rpm when in performance mode.

When in quiet mode, not too bad.

Deceleration is where it is worst.
Thanks for the update.

Sorry to hear your rig is affected. There are many of us who have this very intolerable drone.

It's shocking Jeep has done nothing to help us. Even 2026 model year 392s have crazy drone.???

@ JEEP CARES: Why don't you work to provide a Transparent Solution for affected owners??? And, not the usual, send Jeep Cares a private message about the problem so the rest of us are excluded from the discussion.

Get a no limits device, shut that MDS motor killer off, and never look back!!! also allows you great security features jeep hasn’t provided us with!

Got one, MDS is off. Has been that way since about 150 miles on the ODO.

Drone still there.

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2024 392 with this drone issue from about 1500-2000 RPM, whether it's light throttle in this range, and especially on deceleration, regardless of having Offroad + on or off. A low range very loud deep boominess between 45-70Hz. This Occurs with sport exhaust on or off, but a little less with sport exhaust turned off. This drone can actually be painful.

It is not the active noise cancellation. I have disconnected the mics in the roll bar, and disconnected the subwoofer, and even pulled the fuse to the stereo to rule out the active noise cancellation. Makes no difference, the drone is still there.

Supposed "no drone" exhausts from AWE and Borla Atak and S-type do NOT improve this problem.

Dynamat/Dynapad does nothing.

The pre-2024 model years do not appear to have this problem, or at least not nearly as often. Apparently, some 2024 models do not have this issue, which leads to me to believe there a problem with our examples which exhibit this really bad drone problem.

I believe there must be some type of engineering changes, whether they be acoustically with the exhaust, or some type of computer calibration etc.

I think this needs to be taken up with Jeep corporate.

Jeep must be accumulating data on this since it's becoming a wide-spread problem for the 2024 model year.

It appears not all 2024 392 have this problem, but for the many unfortunate ones that do, it's a really big problem.

This thread, and similar "exhaust boominess" threads are prevalent on the "other" Forum as well (I am not sure if the rules allow us to link other related forum websites).
Has anyone communicated with Jeep?

Has anyone resolved this issue?
I would bet that the MDS is activating and it is switching to four-cylinder mode, which has a horrible drone. Take a look at your dash when you are at these just barely on the throttle conditions and I bet it says four-cylinder.

A very good suggestion. I tried that test initially, but it never indicated it drops in into 4 cylinder mode.

There have been suggestions that Jeep might have made a change in the fuel cut maps that has caused this deceleration drone between 2,000 and 1,500 rpm. I think this assumption is the answer if not very closely related to the question. If you apply very slight throttle during this deceleration you can all but eliminate the drone. This leads me to believe the drone is a result of engine compression braking and this rpm range results in resonant frequencies in the exhaust being amplified.

Yes. I have pretty much concluded that for fuel efficiency, deceleration fuel cut off (DFCO) is mostly likely the problem, the parameters of which have changed and need to adjusted. I think only a tune would solve this, which would invalidate the factory warranty, if we do it.

This is why Jeep should easily solve our problem.

I have been emailing Jeep CEO, Bob Broderdorf, but he continues to ignore all my emails.

Anyone else want to email him? Add more pressure so he or someone at corporate will move to help out affected customers?

Not that I disagree with your issue, but it’s probably worth accepting that the Jeep CEO is never going to respond. It’s not that he’s personally ignoring you—your emails are almost certainly being filtered out long before they could ever reach him. The idea of a CEO hearing directly from individual customers sounds great in theory, but in reality it rarely happens, especially at large companies.

Yes. I was concerned this was the case.
But, something need to be done to support affected customers.

As it was on mine but greatly reduced! The best way to deal with these issues are at the dealer level contrary to popular belief. There are some incredible dealers out there, ones that acknowledge the issues that unfortunately the manufacturers just can’t fix yet we all know there are ways of actually fixing it, but everybody’s worried about warranty warranty warranty in my situation between the dreaded drone making me nauseous the MDS lifters rattling like a box of marbles and a constant smell of coolant amongst some other issues that I can’t quite remember right now my dealer got tired of doing the same old repairs to wind up dealing with the same old issues, in the end by using Mopar parts only we switched to a non-MDS cam non-MDS Lifters a higher volume fuel pump. My dealer refused to touch the PCM, which wasn’t needed at that point anyway and my truck drives absolutely perfect now I do sometimes think when almost at a dead stop about 15 to 1600 RPM I think I do hear a slight hint of drone when coming to a dead stop, but God it is 1 million times better than it was before. Also my fuel economy is 18.4 highway at 70 and my average is 15 around town my engine is quiet runs cool and the truck for some reason has a lot more power than it did before.

Don’t touch the pcm that seems to be where most reps draw the line! The no limits device basically does the same thing as shutting off the MDS in the PCM would it also allows you to do is keep people from mimicking your key IDs, and stealing your vehicle by using a crazy way of keeping all four tires locked, minimizing, the amount of torque and power when a valet takes your jeep! my text said most reps do not mind`tuners or the no limit tuners as they do understand there are things you just need to do like for instance if you drive on the beach constantly dealing with having to fill your ties back up to 37 psi before you can bring them down to wherever you need to drive your jeep while on the street! it’s honestly my opinion that what Jeep intended to build with our new 392 platform comes close to truly being one of the finest vehicles I have ever driven and I’ve had everything , granted they were neutered due to café standards, which caused all these MDS issues they did unfortunately use cheaper suspension components as far as the shocks go in the 2024 and up, but these are minimal things and things that I have corrected on mine! I wish you all the luck in the world perhaps you could find a dealer that completely understands as my dealer understood after his repeated attempts of trying to fix these issues with dozens of these 392s that he has been beaten up with over the last few years.

So the non-MDS cam, non-MDS Lifters a higher volume fuel pump where all replaced under warranty?

Yes I had 3 bad lifters and marks on the cam and a leaking head gasket! And of course the dreaded exhaust manifold leak which was on the p/s but we think that side manifold is slightly warped! Also at hot idle I was below 20 psi I believe and there seemed to be concern weather that was enough! My 392 at 6000 miles had at least 4 oil changes and I only use that ultra pennzoil oil! Again pcm not touched and only mopar parts used

Interesting.
Thank you for sharing with us.

Sounds like you got the results you wanted, with warranty approved repairs/upgrades.

My dealer has had no idea how to fix the drone problem, which the shop foreman diagnosed as "loud and untolerable".

There should be a service bulletin issued to dealers for affected vehicles.

Any other members have their dealers perform the same work??

Not that I know of!

@Srtmodmaster definitely caught a lucky break—right place, right time. It sounds like the dealer was probably reimbursed by CDRJ for the work, but the parts they used wouldn’t have passed a strict warranty audit. Ironically, the fix he got was likely cheaper than doing everything “by the book,” and clearly a lot more satisfying (who wouldn’t love that outcome?). Still, it’s probably not something the rest of us should expect to see replicated.

This kind of thing isn’t new. For years, Jeep addressed a flawed sun visor swivel by replacing the entire assembly—often showing $300+ on the paperwork—while owners could buy a permanent fix kit on Amazon for about $30. The real kicker? They kept installing the same failure-prone design over and over until finally redesigning it a few years ago.

Lesson learned: common sense doesn’t always win out.

I just finished installing the Clayton performance coils, teraflex spacer, metal cloak skids, and 1.75" Teraflex wheel spacers and now I have noticed what I thought could be driveline vibrations but reading through some of this, it might be the exhaust drone? I just fine it weird I only started noticing it after the parts were in stalled and only in quiet mode. Here is a video, any thoughts?

I’d recommend pulling the wheel spacers and reevaluating. How tall are the Teraflex spacers?

Its just the Clayton Performance coils with 1" Teraflex in the front and .5" in the rear.

Then coil spacers causing driveline angle issues shouldn’t be the issue. Wheel spacers possibly.
