It is a stoplight bruiser though. Almost no 2wd can beat the 392 (especially the XR) off the line. One of the reviews talked about how the Jeep wasn't designed by be fast.......the speed is just a byproduct of Jeep trying to eclipse Bronco in every category (horsepower, torque, gear ratio, noise output.....).I would have liked to have seen somebody do it with a XR, hard launch without the rev-limiter and WAO, but then again the 392 is just not meant to be a road racer, take those 3 thru the Rubicon Trail and see how they do!
@hardhat - Is the XR faster off the line than the non-XR? I understand the speed-limiter function, but I thought (fundamentally) they are the same motors/transmissions. If both versions had the same size wheels and tires would it be a fairly equal launch (given that both drivers were equally capable)? It is a stoplight bruiser though. I do think an XR launched hard with the torque reserve and AMAX shifting would've left those guys off the line. Not sure for how long though.....they are bricks.
Even though they are bricks they seem to defy physics. The speedometer needle sweeps so quickly and just keeps accelerating hard even at highway speeds. I passed a bus and transfer truck that were going about 40 mph (right behind each other). By the time I got around them I was going 95.
I don't know how much true difference there is between the XR and non XR. 4.0 vs 4.5 seconds 0-60 seems like more of an improvement than one would anticipate based on gears/tires. That would be an interesting comparison, but they are probably close enough that variation in driving technique and variation of individual vehicles would muddy the waters. My 392XR feels like a rocket propelled go-kart though. I'm able to launch it better than I ever could my mercedes s65 or turbo mustangs. The mercedes would hit traction control and the mustang would spin if you weren't careful. The Jeep just launches like a jet on an aircraft carrier or like the Rock'n Roller coaster at disney![]()
If you want an amazing launch...add the pc78. Just start on a low setting. There‘s one more aspect I’m curious about. I’m wondering how the 392 XR will perform stripped from the doors and the top. Should be pretty significantly lighter but would probably have more drag. Would be cool to know how it would impact 0-60 and 1/4 mile times.
I picked up mine just a week ago so I haven’t tried to launch it yet, can’t wait to experience it in full glory![]()
XR has 4.56 gearing 3.73 for standard 392. The gearing ratio is what allows the XR to accelerate faster. There is no published 0 to 60 by Jeep for the XR, but Car & Driver clocked it at 4.0 vs 4.5 for the non-XR. The Jeep product manager confirmed to me when I asked him directly on Facebook that the XR does in fact accelerate faster to 60 but they have not published any official specs.@hardhat - Is the XR faster off the line than the non-XR? My understanding is that you can now order a new G63 same as the current and the dealer must sell at msrp.Im currently car hunting. The g is great but they want 100k over msrp bc this is the last year of the model (adding electric) and i thought the price was way inflated to begin with so the g is out. Defender.... only way to get the big engine is to buy the same dark defender as the next guy...no color choices so forget that. Bmw is driven by every soccer mom in town, and is just yawn worthy, not to mention looks boring as hell. And our 392.... love it, except for the most uncomfortable seats i have ever had in any of my jeeps.. cant explain why but my butt keeps going numb and i keep tylenol in the console.
So i LOVED this video... but I choose the Range with the 518hp engine. (the price jump to the 575hp engine wasnt worth it).
Racing videos.... they are great. Dummy should've known abt the speed limit...something I detest about the 392. I want to drive fast!
(Dont hate... im keeping the 392 bc hello...its a freakin 392 jeep! Just going to use it when i want to and not as my daily driver).
Similar to your thoughts....I absolutely love my 392 - for my wife I'm trying to convince her to let me buy her the V8 Range Rover Sport - fast, sounds great and luxurious ride all in one - great "family hauler"Im currently car hunting. I love the looks but I've promised myself I'll never buy another land rover product. The reliability and maintenance issues are real. And if work is being done by a dealer the price is astronomical. Guess it was fine while under warranty because I wasn't paying for it but the loaner vehicle guy in Santa Monica is on a first name basis with many of his customers (his name is Leon btw) if that tells you anything.Similar to your thoughts....I absolutely love my 392 - for my wife I'm trying to convince her to let me buy her the V8 Range Rover Sport - fast, sounds great and luxurious ride all in one - great "family hauler"
Oh yes, definitely would not have one out of warranty.I love the looks but I've promised myself I'll never buy another land rover product. The reliability and maintenance issues are real. Well they are listing 100k over and didnt seem very interested in any type of negotiations.... which was fine... the test drive didnt wow me enough for msrp....much less anything over msrp.My understanding is that you can now order a new G63 same as the current and the dealer must sell at msrp.
I do love the sport.... but by the time you add packages its right up there with the range prices . I found the range a better deal simply bc it comes with what are "options" on the sport... all you need to add is the larger 518hp engine... But! Black sports reallllly catch my eye! With "white interior"...im drooling. I'm leaving the sport as an option.... it all depends what i can find on the lots and of course...price point. Im not cheap but im not an idiot... I dont like overpaying (it was worth it for my 392)! Frankly I still love the Grand Wagoneer series 3.... but for the price and the 471 hp..... I rather have the range with 518hp (priced out at equal to 10k difference depending on options). The new 21 and 22 ranges have a markup, but they arent sticking to it. I have yet to cross range rover off my bucket list. Some people do bucket list trips, I have a list of cars.Similar to your thoughts....I absolutely love my 392 - for my wife I'm trying to convince her to let me buy her the V8 Range Rover Sport - fast, sounds great and luxurious ride all in one - great "family hauler"
That is a huge point to me. Especially if I was considering a G or Range. It MUST be under warranty bc maintenance is ridiculous and if you do purchase a semi-lemon, its easier to convince the dealership to take it back. I went thru that with an fpace I bought. Window made a slight howling noise above 85 mph, and since no repair fixed it, I convinced them to take it back, and replace it with an fpace with more options than mine (for the annoyance of having to argue about returning the vehicle).I love the looks but I've promised myself I'll never buy another land rover product. Yes for used but head to a dealership and can now order a new one. Like you I was not overly impressed after owning one for about 8 months.Well they are listing 100k over and didnt seem very interested in any type of negotiations.... which was fine... the test drive didnt wow me enough for msrp....much less anything over msrp.
My dealership is adding 100k to msrp for the new ones. Heck, they could they could offer me below msrp and I would still pass. Plus my local MB dealership has managed to scratch 2 of my cars and back 1 into a pole. All of which they denied..... until I pushed to see the security cameras. I dont trust their service dept at all anymore. 3 strikes.Yes for used but head to a dealership and can now order a new one. Like you I was not overly impressed after owning one for about 8 months.

I'm telling you... even when it was under warranty it still became an incredible pain in my ass how often I found myself at the dealer. I wish warranty covered my time as well as the mechanics'That is a huge point to me. Especially if I was considering a G or Range. We share the same spirit animal apparently.I swear... can I be a professional car buyer??? Bc spending all day on any car lot researching and driving is a day in heaven! I absolutely LOVE shopping for any vehicle in any price bracket!
