Busted coolant hose (little one under alternator)

This happened to a friend of mine on the trail a few weekends ago. I carry 2 rolls of self-fusing silicone tape (orange and black) and we made the repair in about 5 minutes.

This stuff is amazing and can be used for sealing just about hoses, handles high temperatures, high pressures, and will also insulate electrical connections. Definitely a must-have for a recovery bag!

I keep a couple of rolls around as I get them from my business. This stuff works really well. You can also find this in smaller rolls which helps in tight spots.

I had this same problem happen to my 2021 a few weeks ago at about 59k miles. Granted, mine chose to blow while racing some guy in a V8 Grand Cherokee on the expressway after work😅lol.

I had a blast waiting for my husband to meet me at a sketchy park. I managed to make it there just as the sunset was about to begin and everyone was leaving. 🌅

It was almost midnight when the tow truck finally showed up.

I found the culprit the next morning.

First real problem I've had 2021 with 52k miles. No warning. Running fine. All of a sudden steam from passenger side and coolant smell. Was just pulling into church. Coolant everywhere under hood. Figured out where leak was by pouring distilled water into coolant recovery tank. Never overheated but would have of course. Hose was a PITA to replace. Got one at oreillys that was similar and cut it down to size. Don't know why they made the hose like this. It hooks to a smaller hose through a reducer. Had to remove 3 clamps to get thing apart. Smaller hose was easier to remove and not much space to work. Prob easier if I took the belt off, but all it all less than an hour job. Just had to find right pliers to get down in there to get clamps off. Not really that bad.

Filled back up with distilled water. Will get proper coolant tomorrow and drain some out and top it back off to get close to 50/50.

Oh and my daughter backed into the light pole at church when we went up there to get jeep and I had to tell the story of how I backed by dads jeep into a tree after I washed it when I was a kid. ........

All good now though. Truck and lightpole fixed. Busy day :)
Mine just blew today, same hose. 19k miles.

Just ordered, good call

FYI for anyone looking, I found the replacement part for these. It's the oil cooler inlet hose, part number 68481171AC.

I bought a spare off Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Mopar-68481171AC-Hose-COOLER-INLET/dp/B0CXY6P86N

I might try to use the replacement part to engineer a higher quality silicone replacement. I really do not like the idea of this thing letting go 50 miles from the pavement somewhere.

This part is a pain in the ass.. busted both on my jeeps, I changed all hoses to 8 ply silicon hoses on both jeeps. The stock hoses are thin and unreliable when out temps are hot and engine running hot. You can find 392 hoses online and happy to send you what I am using as they were custom made for Xtreme garage as we have so many 392 busting them that going forward all the jeeps here in Dubai are switching to these 8 ply silicon hoses. Cost is around 700 usd for the complete hose kit. Never had a busted hose since this for over 13 months

This just happened to mine this past weekend after driving 2:45 and as I pulled into the lot at AOAA for the Jeep Jamboree. I was gunning it up a hill, smelled coolant all of a sudden, and then saw steam as I rolled to a stop on the gravel parking lot. The event staff were amazing and even drove me to Napa (Thanks Brian!)

2021 @ 36k miles.

I’m thinking I should replace all of my coolant hoses now. Is it all the same or is there a tier 1 alternative?

My 392 blew a upper coolant hose. the other day.... i run a lower thermostat 180 so the jeep runs right around 190-195 ( just at the low fan setting) .. ive wanted to manage hear with the hemi and keep it as cool as practical. I'm hoping it was just a weak hose ( been installed for about 3 years) but man it blew coolant every where ... i run a 18PSI cap , so i wonder what the coolant pressure was when it blew... Do you have the part number for a new one?

Same thing happened to mine a month ago. Thankfully I was right down the street from the dealer. Hard to believe we are having this problem on an off road vehicle. Thank god this didn’t happen in the middle of a trail on the side of a mountain.

It seems a lot of us are lucky this is happening off-trail!

Lesson learned: I'm going to replace all of my hoses with high quality stuff and keep the self sealing tape in my recovery kit. The question now is whether to wheel with a container of extra coolant.

Which hoses are you seeing that are most prone to failing? From this thread it sounds like the small hose that goes down to the oil cooler and the upper radiator hose are common - or are you seeing others too? Thx -

Thanks, I already ordered that one. I was asking about the upper hose.

I'm pretty sure that part number, 6841171AC, includes the upper hose....I don't know why it's not one piece....
