So I am the proud owner of a Sarge Green 392! I traveled with two of my sons last week to pick it up and drive it home. I wanted to share my experience so the rest of you know what to expect.
Communication with Granger was difficult as I prepared to fly to Iowa with two little boys and make a long trip home. I would get sporadic emails from generic Granger addresses with no ones name on it, so I had no idea who I was talking to. I had all sorts of questions that were relevant to financing, travel, preparation, accessories (asked several times for someone to please send me a few photos of the Jeep) that went unanswered for days. To be fair, the rep they assigned me, Jackie, was out for a while with a health issue, so she was who should have been helping me but wasn't present to do so. The problem I ran into was no one else was really willing to talk to me; I guess I wasn't their client so perhaps they didn't feel they had to, but not receiving any calls back from the multiple people the admin put me through to was frustrating, and it didn't feel great committing to a trip like this with so many unanswered questions. Having said all that, Cassie in finance spoke directly with my bank to get that part taken care of so I knew I could at least go pick it up, and Jackie did eventually email me when she got back in, including a few photos of the Jeep.
We left Thursday night and stayed at the Fairfield Inn near the airport; they have a free shuttle to take you to the hotel. Friday morning (it was like 12 below with the wind chill!) we took an Uber to Granger, which was about a half hour ride from the hotel.
We walked into the Jeep side of the dealer and asked for Jackie, and were told we needed to walk down to the Ford end of the dealership, as that is where they do the online sales transactions. Make sure when you come in to go directly to the Ford side and save yourself the time and the walk. I wish I'd taken a photo of the Jeep sitting there in front of the Ford building, it was kind of funny.
Jackie was there and greeted us and had most of our paperwork ready to go. She was very excited about the Jeep and said it was the first 392 they've had and it was a lot of fun; really nice young lady. She said the PDI had been done, fluids were all checked and tire pressures were to spec, and they filled it up with premium. I noticed that 12 additional miles had appeared on the odometer between Wednesday and Friday. Zach was there and I was hoping to meet him and thank him, but he was unavailable. We drove up to the Jeep building to finish up one thing with Cassie in finance (who was also lovely, and the deal was as promised) and we were on our way.
The first 100 miles were tough during break in; keeping this thing slow isn't easy! I started playing with the settings, pairing my phone, figuring out Apple CarPlay. Noted that the tires were actually at 45 pounds according to the TPMS, not the 37 indicated on the door; fixed that at the first stop for gas. We had a really nice drive, followed the engine break in procedures as I understand them, until we hit 300 miles and could really open her up a bit. Holy crap this thing can move, and the noises it makes are intoxicating! We drove to St Louis and visited the Arch, then kept on til we got to Nashville where we stayed with a friend. His house was outside the city in the hills; I almost felt bad for all the people listening to the performance exhaust echo through the valley as I would accelerate over and over again coming out of turns or going up hills. Almost.
Saturday we went into Nashville and the boys did some climbing at a cool spot called Climb, and then we headed home to Louisville. My last Jeep was a JK, and the ride and handling and refinement in the JL is a massive improvement. I had no issues with staying in the seat for such long stretches; it's really not a bad road trip vehicle at all. I'm starting to think it would be fun to drive out west and explore sometime, and now I'm not even a little concerned about the lengthy drive in a Jeep. It's definitely a climb up for my boys, so shorter folks or those with children should probably consider some sort of steps. I've got some RockSlide Engineering Gen 3 steps going in this week or next, which will help a lot. I bought the rubber tubing to put along the fenders and need to put that in, as I did get lots of little road debris in there on the drive home. The LED light package is terrific, way better than my last Jeep, and way better than my Ram as well. We had some sun yesterday and it was over 60, so I finally got to open the SkyOneTouch top and I really like that feature as well; even with all that canvas up there it's much quieter than my JK hardtop was. For those wondering, it has the new style seats, and has the 392 startup screen.
I've put over 1000 miles on it so far, and while I had a few frustrations with Granger they came through for me and I'd do it all again. I appreciate the opportunity, Zach!
