Wireless CarPlay or Hiding Charging Cord?

Wow... that's a very specific (and I suspect exceedingly rare for 90% of us) example. Even with that one, very specific example, on balance, Carplay is much better for me than the factory GUI. But hey, as I've said numerous times in this thread already... to each his own. :)

Also - I find it hilarious that we have become a society who is so desperately dependent upon "google maps" to tell us how to get places that we have figured out how to find for generations in the past. I get having to look at it initially to get your game plan... and yes, I get the value in live traffic/delay updates and all of that, but it's just funny to me that "adventurous," "wilderness loving" off roaders in Jeeps feel so crippled by the thought of not having Waze or Google tell us every turn we need to make. 😆
Man I'm 44, used to deliver things to houses all across the city I grew up in so I lived with maps in my car. I knew random streets in neighborhoods I had no business being in. The idea of taking a trip to another city without Google Maps now blows my mind now.

I was trying to give a specific, real life example just to illustrate the issue. Not, sure if that's rare though. I would say it's pretty common that someone is on the road but wants to swing by or find a place that's potentially somewhere on the way. Can't tell for everyone but I use this functionality all the time.
Yep, I got your point, nav apps kinda make us dependent or even dummies who can only blindly follow the directions and don't even know how to find basic places around 😂

1. I can't speak for Apple, but on Adroid Auto, there's an alternate route icon that looks like this: View attachment 5901. If you hit it, it'll pop up other routes and show the times for each. It'll label them as A, B, C, etc on the map and then to the leff it'll give times for each.
2. Not an issue for me. I can't say I zoom in or out much, I just follow the diretions.
3. Grab phone, google King Soopers, click directions, and now the dash unit will show those directions. I never search for anywhere on the dash unit.

So yea, I can't speak for CarPlay but all of that is super easy with Android.
1. This is what I'm talking about, CarPlay doesn't show that in a real time while navigating, it will only show a grey alternative route but not the time difference.

2. I like to know what's going on and be able to adjust the route if needed :)
3. Can't do that if it's already navigating. You have to unplug, and that will automatically cancel the existing route, so you have to put the final destination again, then put King Soopers and plug the cable back hoping it didn't get confused as like you said you can only follow the instructions and don't really see the entire route :) While on the phone I tap the loupe button, type King Soopers in the search, pick from the map the result I like and voila. Takes 10s and doesn't distract me while driving.

1. It does though, you just have to hit the icon and then it'll show you. Mine will even pop up and say over the speakers "Alternate route found saving 8 minutes" and then give me option A and B. It saved me 3 hours of time by getting me off I-95 when going to Charleston a few weeks ago bc of a bad crash that had shut down I-95 completely.
2. Google does the route for me lol. It knows traffic and adjust for me. No need to route it myself, personally.
3. No, you don't. You can still use Google. You can't use Maps, but you can use Google. If you Google a location it'll always give you a directions options, Click it and it'll send directions to your dash screen.

Again, I use Android Auto. Maybe Apple butchers Google Maps, idk. But it works flawlessly on Android Auto.

I have CMM 20mm grab bar ball mount connected, to Offroam 3.5 inch long dual 20mm socket, connected to BulletPoint phone mount holder. I use CarPlay everyday all day but I do prefer to plug in to the arm rest connector. I like my phone charging. My cable is black and falls between the passenger seat and arm rest, mostly hidden. I hate cables too. I’m a Waze guy but all the maps work perfectly. I don’t even entertain the thought buying a vehicle these days without it because I have 3 teenagers starting to drive now.

Laughing at the fact that you keep saying "King Soopers" like eveyone knows what the heck you're talking about. That was the main reason I was ribbing you about your "very specific and rare" example. Also - If a significantly shorter route becomes available, Google maps will still tell you. At least that's been my experience. I also don't always blindly hop to the "fastest route" as it changes during a road trip because it's often a function of temporary slow downs which usually clear before it actually matters anyway. I literally just had this scenario play out in a trip back south from Michigan. Chicago obviously had notoriously bad traffic issues and they usually mess with google maps ETAs even when your route isn't directly through CHI.

I was wrong, it does show it on the map. You have to push anything ti see it.

We all use this capability for are varying reasons, so it's relative. I have a Super Duty Platinum (Sync) and Uconnect is easily superior, and neither have wireless CarPlay which I don't understand. My wife and I go to Orlando a lot so I'll run the Waze for "obstacles" but we'll still surf the other maps for alternates cause I'd rather go out of the way, then to sit in traffic, even if it's a little extra time. I don't own a 392 to be parked on the Interstate, if there is a dirt road or a median to cross and it keeps me moving, no issues. If Jeep finally releases a wireless CarPlay Uconnect, I'll replace the whole unit if that's what it takes. But for now no wire for me, that's my wife's Jeep and it pisses me off every time I'm in it.

I guess I prefer using the iPhone for navigation here are a few reasons:
  1. I really like how nice and high in my sight picture my phone is. That makes it easy to glance at my moving map without taking my eyes off the ball.
  2. The speed trap “pins” (police) on the iPhone map are very useful. I found that they weren’t displayed on the AirPlay menu when I tried using the wireless dongles.
  3. Finally I like how precise and effortless the phone inputs are. I found the UConnect4 not as responsive and honestly kinda clunky by comparison.

I think the main point I wanted to share is that the built in Bluetooth is very reliable and a good alternative to CarPlay. When I bought my 392 I felt that AirPlay was absolutely necessary, but after trying it out I found much to my surprise that the Bluetooth was a better setup for me. Just for comparison here is another heads up setup.
