Winston, Good find on that, I'm not much of an AI guy so things I could search on I usually loose out on because I share my past knowledge on experience and not using the web. At least its good to know I was on point on this one, lolOur "friendly" society robot assistant gave me this information:
Jeep implemented a running production change from a cast aluminum oil pan to a stamped steel oil pan on the 6.4L Hemi in the fall of 2021.
The Change & Impacted Models
The switch occurred during the transition to the 2022 model year. Early 2021 Wrangler JL Rubicon 392s feature the original cast aluminum pan, while late-build 2021 models and all subsequent 2022, 2023, and 2024 392s are factory-equipped with the stamped steel version.
Reasons for the Change
Off-road vulnerability and customer feedback drove the redesign. Cast aluminum is brittle and prone to shattering or cracking upon heavy trail impacts, whereas stamped steel will typically dent and remain sealed.
The steel pan's modified shape pulls the lowest point of the sump up, netting an additional 1.5 inches of critical clearance beneath the engine.
Feature Original Cast Aluminum Pan Updated Stamped Steel Pan Ground Clearance ~13.75 inches ~15.25 inches Drain Plug Orientation Pointed straight down, exposed to rocks Angled toward the rear, protected Oil Capacity 7.0 quarts 7.5 quarts
Official Stellantis Documentation
Stellantis did not issue a formal Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) or recall because this was a rolling factory design improvement rather than a defect repair. However, the concrete evidence of the change from Stellantis is documented natively in the Mopar parts catalog and dealership service procedures:
- Incompatible Architecture: The two pans are not directly interchangeable. Mopar parts diagrams show that swapping between the two requires a new front engine cover, dipstick, dipstick tube, windage tray, and oil pickup tube.
- Revised Capacity: Dealership service networks updated the required oil fill capacity for the 392 from 7.0 quarts to 7.5 quarts specifically to accommodate the redesigned dimensions of the steel pan.
Source Material:
- 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 Owner's Manual Supplement: Officially documents the updated 7.5-quart oil capacity for the 6.4L V8 engine.
- JL Wrangler Forums ("Is the two oil pan interchangeable?" thread): Community documentation from November 2021 verifying the exact 1.5-inch clearance gain (15.25 inches versus 13.75 inches) and detailing the required front engine cover, dipstick, windage tray, and pickup tube replacements needed to swap from aluminum to steel.
- Mopar Official eStore & Dealership Service Catalogs: Parts diagrams explicitly separate the early 2021 cast aluminum pan assemblies from the 2022+ stamped steel units, demonstrating they are not direct bolt-on replacements and require differing lower engine components.
Sometimes, It's hard for an oldguy set in his ways to use new tools. lol
