Service 4WD —> transfer case - 2nd failure?

I have had Serv 4WD message multiple times that goes away after a restart. Dealer checked twice and could not find any issues...finally failed this weekend. RWD only, regardless t-case shifter location...ended up being the actuator motor and parts are on order.

Last Friday Jeeps ready! New actuator and tsb performed. Left dealer and made it 3 blocks and service 4wd message came back on. Back to dealer but tech was out until Tuesday so wait until then. Back this morning and informed have to replace complete tcase under warranty. 3-5 days for parts won’t be ready until next week. Oh and can not proceed with the work until I authorize $350 in costs because I have aftermarket parts. I asked what parts cause the out of pocket costs and they said skid plates and driveshafts. I asked if they had to remove stock skid plates and driveshaft’s to swap a tcase and they said yes but Jeep won’t cover them removing aftermarket parts under warranty? Really? Has anyone heard this before? I authorized the charges as my skids are more work to remove but just seems off.

I have MORE skids installed, Had 2 TCs replaced so far and have not been upcharged by dealer for skid removal/re install
Seems like a BS move from your dealer though

Yep, I was charged over 700 for warranty work because they had to drop a skid plate or two when they were working on my stalling issue… and Jeep never solved the actual problem!!!

I guess the lesson is to remove our skids before taking it to the dealership.

On an oil change in my cross country trip this summer, there was an extra $96 charge for my Artec full skids. I was not told up front and I have a fuel door in the skids, but was told the tech had to drill for access to oil filter. They agreed to take it off only after I held the coveted satisfaction survey over their heads. They didn't like the idea of getting all negative ratings. My local dealer has not had any such issues with my Jeeps.

I have had the Service 4WD light come on twice over about a year (only had it about a year and a half now), both times at the end of a day on the trails, usually even after running 4H Part Time though today I had it in auto for most of the day, switching to part time after lunch. Like everyone else it goes off after turning off and back on, and Uconnect does not send any message about the warning (though I get an email every time about tire pressure sensors since I air down, duh!) Sounds like I need to pay more attention to using 4H part time since I do forget a lot of the time when we are doing fairly easy dirt roads (with rocks, of course, being in CO).

Before my dealer (Wave) oil change, I removed the oil pan access door (only) from my Artec skids, and there was no upcharge. I was advised to do that when taking it in, and have also been told that removing the skids is not covered for warranty repairs, so there will be a labor charge for that. Vexing but not unreasonable IMO. Dropping the skids is a PITA so am not looking forward to if/when I have to do that.

That said, I had a leaky shock replaced under warranty, and they didn't say anything about the rear LCA skid (no extra charge), so there's that. But that's a bolt-on so no additional work for them.

If I take it to my local 4x4 shop, they charge labor by the hour, and said I could save myself money and them time by dropping the skids before taking it in for any work that would require working through the skids.

Yes I have read many talk about having to pay for skid plate r &r but drive shaft come on I think that’s a stretch. But different fasteners not standard Jeep stuff so now they got to figure out torque value and probably replace the bolts . Stupid.

I always remove my skids whenever I bring my Jeep in for service. Anything I can do to make their job easier, so hopefully they will do a better job.

Bummer! The skids too, but mainly that the TSB didn't resolve this.
I had the dreaded C140E-00 back in Feb. Horrible binding and almost undriveable. It went away the next day, but I took it to the dealer anyway. They cleared the code and couldn't reproduce it.
Fast forward to yesterday (Oct 21) and it came on again. Same symptoms. Also went away this morning, but took it back to the dealer and this time they applied the SW fix from the TSB you mentioned. I was trying to be optimistic about this, but maybe I should prepare myself for it happening again.

I don't want to do the Atlas fix. Very expensive, and I like the convenience of the AWD-ness of the MP3022. I was doing a little googling while at the dealer and it seems like many Jeep/Dodge vehicles had the stronger MP3023. I'm curious why Jeep didn't opt for that in the 392? Also curious if it would be a possible upgrade for those that want a beefier transfer case, but don't want to lose AWD capability?

Thanks,
jgp
