Power Steering System Potential Issue

Hey there - what did you use for cooling fan? Curious on set up as I am now seeing the warning light (despite sub freezing temps and street driving).

Have you considered getting an aftermarket cooler? There are options that have a fan built in, as well as finned coolers.

I don't have personal experience with them, but if you watch Matts Offroad Recovery on YouTube, he's got finned coolers mounted on the front of his recovery vehicles. Which clearly take a lot of abuse.

Is there a general consensus? A stock 392 (XR) on 35's won't generally have an over heat issue on the power-steering, but oversized tires (37/38/40/etc.) will cause overheating? OR they all overheat sometimes when rock-crawling?

It rarely happens on the road and I recommend that you worry about it unless you experience it.

In general, it happens under off road conditions and is due heat.

For me, 30F and snowing. Driving from on pavement less than one mile and came on. Steering wheel felt squirrelly on rest of drive home (less than 5 miles total)

This sounds like you want to check the ground wire that has been mentioned on the forum.

With 35’s you will still get the warning I do , what’s wrong is not being able to turn the wheel on a hard line in the rocks or the wheel as previously posted being pulled out of your hands!

Happened to me twice. Once in Ouray doing a long climb to Clear Lake. Second time was on hwy285 for a couple of hours. Both times all it took was a small time to cool off. After the second time I checked the fluid level which was a little low but not bad. Added a little fluid and haven't had it happen in the last year and a half.

I'm on my 3rd power steering pump at 11,000 miles. If they get hot to many times they start leaking fluid out the motor. After I put the fan on I've never had the light come on again. If you keep your tire pressure above 15 you are usually good. I run mine at 10 PSI on 37x12:50R17 tires.

I'm going 38s with beadlocks...I'll see how it goes on the factory EPS setup but if it gives me trouble I'll go PSC.

I think it's more accurate to say you MIGHT get the warning. I'm on 37's, no warnings. But I've done limited offroading so far.

PSC is on my list, I just put the Atlas transfer case in last month and need a break from working on the jeep.

never ends!! I just ordered the complete 7000 series NVM skidplate system after I damaged my current setup on a blue trail.

it will go on in January once it arrives. then in about 6 months the 38s and lift goes on.

why is this hobby so expensive

Hello! I know there was a previous thread about this a few years back but it didn't offer much insight so I wanted to see if anyone else has had a power steering warning come up on their dash while offroading. I live in CO and have a new 2024 392 with about 4k miles on it. We did some mild (but very rocky) offroading today and after about two hours on the trail I got a message saying "power steering system is hot possible reduced performance". It stayed on for the remainder of the trip but went away as soon as I got back on the pavement. I did not have any issues other than the warning. It was in the 70s with mild but very rocky terrain. I tried calling my dealer and am awaiting a return call. Should I push for a warranty check? Any advice from more experienced offroaders?

For other CO members - it was Kingston Peak and Loch Lomond. Rocky but not very technical.

Mine didn't do it before, even on trails... But on a recent drive to Kentucky from Virginia, it happened. Eventually, the power steering quit working and my electrical system went a little wild. Fog lamps and dash lights started to flicker and I got a charge system red indicator light too.

The dealership initially thought it was a faulty power steering pump so they replaced it. The problems continued... Turned out to be my alternator. Apparently It was kicking out too much juice and messed things up.

They just replaced it and are telling me it's good to go now. I guess I will find out shortly.

Yep mine does it on rocky trails never a total failure . Just stupid how so many are having this same problem and Jeep is not offering a fix like upgrades on steering box or pump thanks
