My experience with Granger

Damn that sucks, sorry to hear all the issues you had Sully. I'm waiting for Granger to get mine in the next month or two, so Fingers crossed I do not have the same experience. I'll be real curious on the excise tax and all that BS, since I'm in Colorado and will have DV plates. LOL the last car I bought was from Carmax in 2006 :ROFLMAO: (and that was a STUPID easy process)
Not sure how much relief DV plate will give you, but with regular plates in the first year of ownership you can expect almost $2k of registration fees. CO sucks on this aspect.

Carrier’s driver is now insisting the dealership signed off on the damage. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ too much drama.

Ordered mine at a small local dealer with good reputation. 2k below MSRP, took ownership after 3 months as initially promised, no BS. Cheaper from out of state dealers, but I didn’t want to travel and risk.
Ditto
I used Granger for the mopar warranty but the sales process has always seemed scammy. It’s just a reminder of how much the car buying process in this country (typically) sucks.

I don’t see any copy of the title app or even a temp registration with the vehicle. Only a transit permit which doesn’t make it legally drivable except to the destination. Does anyone know what granger’s process is for getting you what you need to register it?

It's possible they've mailed the docs to you and didn't ship them with the vehicle. I sold my 4Runner to a guy in Arizona and he had me Fed Ex him the title separately. He apparently buys cars and has them shipped somewhat frequently and said "You NEVER ship the title with the car" because if it get's stolen off of the trailer, whoever got it could literally just go register it legally...

Not sure if dealers follow that advice, but made sense to me at the time.

Come to find, they do not provide any kind of temporary registration, but instead were attempting to convince me that the transit tag they put on was valid for 45 days. In our state at least, a transit tag is not valid for driving at all, but only for towing it to your destination. They've disavowed themselves of any responsibility to provide a temporary registration, and wrote back to me that "It is up to you on if you'd like to drive it illegally, or park it until your intransit title arrives."

I'm within an inch of calling an attorney.
If the transit tag is valid for driving it in the state it was issued, then should't it be valid in every state (due to interstate compacts)?

Just because your state issues transit tags differently does not mean that those rules apply to a tag issued in another state.

IANAL, but as far as I know, if it's legal to drive in the state it was issued, then it should still be legal in every state.

Also, just don't get pulled over.

Yeah, I didn’t have any of these issues working with Mark Dodge. As soon as the Jeep was put on the truck from the rail yard, they wanted to finish the finance part quickly AND they took care of my registration. They even cut me a $32 check a month after delivery because they withheld too much for taxes.

Fortunately, Mindy over there is wonderful, and is getting me out a proper temp this week.

Sounds like I'll be talking to them next Jeep.

That only applies to tags ISSUED by your state, they can not void a temp tag issued by another state though whoever told you they were good for 45 days was incorrect as they are only good for 15 days. That said, I had my title from the state of Iowa before my tags expired all 3 times so it wasn't any issue, though my local county assessor's office in SD would have issued me a new 30 day temp tag (with my sales paperwork) while we were awaiting the title had it taken longer.

Iowa - In transit permits permits are used for:
  • Vehicles purchased from a dealer by a nonresident. This allows the nonresident to drive the vehicle to the buyer's home state for any required titling and registration.
The permit must be displayed in the rear window of the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle must have a sales invoice verifying the sale, and the invoice shall be signed by the dealership.
All information required on the in-transit permit must be entered by the dealer. The permits are void 15 days after the date they are issued by the selling dealer.

I have ordered from Granger, have a VIN but have not bee schedule for production. So far interchanges have been professional and efficient.

I checked Oregon Laws, and any other state's valid permit is valid in Oregon--this is likely similar in most (all?) states due to reciprocity considerations.

Sorry to hear it doesn’t feel good to spend that much money and have a bad experience . Unfortunately it’s just been my personal experience this is extremely common at all American car dealers. American car dealers are always a hassle to deal with. I have bought numerous different American branded cars and various dealers with all pretty similar results. Process always takes way longer than it should when you walk in with an appointment and with a check. Your always treated pretty much like cattle. This has really dissuaded me from buying any more American cars. Every other vehicle I have bought wether it be European or Japanese was always a lot better. The Germans and Italians of course are at the top of my list. My wife refuses to go to any American car dealers from how we have been treated in the past.

Dealers really need to get their stuff together. Wether you’re buying a $15,000 car or a $200,000 car it should be a good experience because either of those purchases is a big deal to that person.

I don’t want it to be special. I just want to be treated like a person.

Let’s trade good for special. All I am saying is it shouldn’t be a worse experience then buying a tv. Which now it really is. Every dealer should treat every customer well as in every case a large amount of money is being exchanged. If a target store treats you badly you wouldn’t go back to that target. We are talking a much larger purchase but they don’t get treated the same way. For some reason people give dealers more slack.

@caraholic It isn't just American manufacturers.
1. I bought a Toyota Tundra years ago, took delivery and was on a road trip with it the very next morning. Kept getting pinged from my credit monitoring system that my credit was being pulled again and again (about a DOZEN TIMES). I have an 800+ Score. The dealer messed up the deal and kept searching for a better financing deal. My credit nose dived for months... I gave them the truck back! Jim Norton Toyota Tulsa

2. In April, my wife traded a 2019 BMW for a 2024 BMW, both financed through BMW Financial. Her 2019 was so nice that they sold it in 3 days. They didn't pay off the balance of the loan for almost a month!!!! They blamed it on someone in the back office being on maternity leave and "deals just stacked up on her desk"... We ended up eating an extra month of interest on a car we no longer owned that the dealer flipped in 3 days!!! BMW of Tulsa. Being that both were financed through BMW Financial, they literally had to just log in and push a button to make the payoff. I'm sure whoever bought the 2019 also went through BMW Financial... Absolute Clown World over there.

Oh for sure it’s not only American dealers. In my experience it has been every American car dealer I have ever used. Personally I have only had one so so experience at a non American dealer, the rest were fantastic. That however doesn’t say that it can’t happen. I may just be really lucky in all my other car purchasers and very unlucky in my American ones.

Sorry to hear about your experience @Sulley - I've purchased a couple of vehicles through Granger and both times had a great experience. When I purchased my TRX earlier this year, I left the dealership only with the transit tag on the rear window. About a week later I received a packet in the mail with all the paperwork needed to register the vehicle in Texas and a temp tag that expired 30 days after the vehicle was purchased.

Thanks. Hopefully same will be for me. Then I can just be done with them. They mentioned losing money last year to flippers, probably from rumors about the 392 ending production. So I wonder if a lot of these newer and more difficult policies came from that. Regardless, treating every customer like a criminal is not an effective way to combat flipping.
