Anyone keeping theirs stock?

This is an interesting question because I’m not sure there is a definition of “stock”. I believe my 392 is “basically stock" because I haven’t made any tire, engine or suspension mods. I did install a set of Baja Designs LP4 driving lights, hood lift kit, OEM running boards and minor accessories (fire extinguisher, sill guards, short antennae, locking gas cap, locking hood latches). So, is my 392 still stock?
It depends on whats festering in the brain when you look at it.

My build is slowing coming along. Purchased lift, shocks, tires, driveshafts, and steering stabilizer from Northridge 4x4 today. Tires (37” Nitto ridge grapplers) are on back order an estimated 60-90 days. Lift (3.5” Clayton) and shocks (falcon fast adjust 3.3s) are on back order an estimated 30-45 days. Steering parts to be ordered soon as well before the lift and tires are installed.

I took my JKU to Northridge in SLC and those guys have some cool builds. It would be dangerous bringing the hemi there.

We need to have an official definition of stock before this thread goes any further.

If ours ever gets here since its the XR 37's, winch, a few lights, skid plates, exhaust, i do plan on using it so might as well
protect it. and the 456 gears is a no brainer for 37's. my opinion. heading to SEMA will be a great place to look at all the
different ways to spend money. this will be our last jeep i feel.
Let us know what's new

Good idea.
You go first, given your title here, it’s appropriate. 🤓

Yea, keeping it stock.

When I buy a car/truck/Jeep, I don’t care about future resell value simply because I buy things to my liking and don’t think that far.

If a stock vehicle meets most of my needs/wants I’ll keep it with no or only small mods.

This Jeep 392 XR is one that I love, the look and the practicality. To be precise:
- I won’t go with bigger tires, 35” is good enough. 37” or bigger requires more mods to go with a stronger axle or truss, proper lift, tire carrier…
- I did install Shrockworks rock sliders so my little kids can use as steps. And I still keep the rubi rails take off in garage when I want to go back to stock.
- 31” black antenna. A bit shorter than stock but much nicer look.
- Rokblokz XL mud flaps to match the XR fender extension while keeps the door panels less dirty/messy. And I can remove them easily to go back stock.
- I just ordered very beefy diff covers, better than stock in my opinion.

All in all, I’m not keeping my rig THAT stock. But I can go back to stock easily which I would not want to and don’t feel the needs at this point.

It’s just like owning a house, many of us always make improvements either small or big projects to each owner’s like and constraints (time, budget, side effects). There are also owners who don’t do much and simply live and enjoy.

Since I’m being called out: Must maintain fit, form, and function of original factory produced JLUR 392. Performance modifications and hard parts are prohibited. Safety and accessibility accessories are acceptable within commonly recognized acceptability. Items of dispute must have two thirds support through a forum quorum vote.

examples:
Exterior bolt-on hardparts (replacement or additions) or paint modifications render a mod. Allowable exceptions are door-off mirror configurations as a legally required safety item. For the elderly, disabled, or size limited, a manual or fixed step option is acceptable; must present proof of limitation. Fender and grill mods, roof racks, mounted lights, bumper and tire carrier mods are not allowed.

Snow plow prep and winches are acceptable as long as used in conjunction with the factory bumper. Items that can be used for safety, recovery, or deliberate work without changing modification of the factory profile are allowed.

Electrical plug and play is acceptable, i.e. Tazer or Pedal Commander type accessories, tunes or tuning devices are not. Wiring provisions for specialized radios and geo-tracking devices are allowed when hard wired, or routed through factory auxiliary switch; aftermarket switch options are a mod.

Changing wheels is a mod, tires are not. Too many variations within an acceptable range to specifically regulate, but must fall within the A/T, M/T of the 32 to 37 range without suspension or clearance modification.

Not a mod:
Seat covers over factory leather.
Grab handles.
Fire extinguisher and mount.
Flashlight and mount.
Holster and mount.
Upgraded audio utilizing the stock head unit and without additional pods or sub enclosures.

I’m done now.

While I waited for mine to be built I contemplated keeping it stock. That idea went out the window within days of taking delivery. A stock 392 is nice but it's ultimately still a factory Jeep with stamped control arms, rubber bushings, etc. I've built every Jeep I've owned and couldn't allow myself to keep one of the best Jeeps ever made comprised of primarily poor quality components.

Jeeps main focus on the 392 was stuffing the 6.4L into the JL chassis. The 1" lift was added simply to provide clearance for the oil pan and filter, the front frame was stiffened to handle the additional weight, and the oversized grill and hood vent were added to help keep things cool. The suspension overall was an afterthought and not designed to be a total complete package like Ford did with the suspension on the Bronco Raptor. Jeep did what they needed to do to stuff in the 6.4L. It's up to the owner to round out the package by completing where Jeep left off.

I think you copy and pasted that from a DMV site.😜
Much better write up than I would have done!

I own an NHRA rule book for my reading pleasure.

NHRA stock class does allow for headers and aftermarket exhaust, as long as in compliance with street (DOT) regulations. Borla would qualify for stock.

And as the great Smokey Yunick once said, “if the rules do not explicitly state that you can’t, then you must infer that you can.”

Yeah mostly stock. It is a 2022 XR, I will be removing the '392's off the hood. I am not wanting to draw much attention to it when parked away from home. It is best to be the 'greyman' . ( it is grey) I would like to find a black hard top.
I will be putting a Hellwig sway bar on the rear to improve the stability. Hellwig really improves the ride.
The shocks can hang around for now. They are pretty good so far, 1200 miles. Otherwise this is a best Jeep I have owned.

It’s sad to see the 392 emblems to be removed. There are plenty Dodge 392 in my area and lots of corvette, so I don’t really worry too much. But I don’t want a personalized license plate for the same reason.

The 392 rear sway bar is already larger than the regular JL I remember. Let us know how the Hellwig improves the ride after you have it installed, it’s on my list too.

I don't intend to make any tire/wheel, suspension, bumper, or engine mods. Anything I do will be cosmetic or functional in nature.

I’m already down the rabbit hole but everything I do is easily put back to stock, no major appearance changes though.

Why on gods green earth would anyone keep a Wrangler stock? 😆
I agree. Jeeps love mods, and people who like doing mods love Jeeps. It’s a symbiotic relationship.

I'm going to do a few appearance/convenience mods, but mine is going to be a stock garage queen. That could change over time, but for the first few years, it's going to be that.

If they keep making these and they become more commonplace, I may mod it or get another to mod. If they stop making them this year or soon, I'll probably keep it close to stock. If that's the case, I'm going to be that guy who has one 10 years down the road that is stock with like 15k miles on it. I have that stupid auto collector tendency that admittedly gets in the way of having fun with vehicles sometimes. Thankfully I have limited garage space.

I do need a 4wd winter daily driver. I have an FJ that I'm going to sell. I'm going to replace that with either a bronco, gladiator, or JL ev. I also considered getting another 392 to use as a winter dd though. We'll see.
