Xtreme Recon Package

I gotta tell you guys/gals...I'm not one to call people out publicly on forums (or anywhere else for that matter). I've always been of the thought, "praise in public - punish in private". But...there are times when the bulls**t gets so overwhelming and annoying that something has to be said.

XR...non-XR...who gives a sh#t? One version is not anywhere near better than the other IMO. If you wanted an XR version of our beloved Jeeps...FANTASTIC! I couldn't be more happy for you. Likewise...if you wanted a non-XR...GREAT! Have fun with it. Personally, I had the chance to choose between both when I bought mine. I chose the non-XR because I KNEW I was going to wrench on it, so in my simple mind, I thought, "why waste the cost of the XR package when I was going to change out pretty much everything the XR came with anyway?" And...I did just that (waiting on my big brake kit). If I wanted to buy it because the speed limiter is 110 vice 99, I would have done that, but I have no desire to go over 100 in my 392. I have a very fast Shelby Mustang to get my thrills with. If any of you bought it for that reason...AWESOMENESS!! It definitely is a thrill!

It's not just this forum either...I see it in other forums as well. Bunch of children.

Oh! Before anyone gets their panties in a wad...I just ordered an XR-version of the 392 for my lovely Mrs.! She loves it so much, she wanted one for herself without all the wrenching. The 392 XR is perfectly set up for her and I couldn't be more pleased with her decision.

C'mon folks. Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but when it turns into sniping and outright disrespect we no longer have a "community". We have discord.

I do apologize if I have offended anyone, but I truly enjoy this forum and the majority of the people in it.

Cheers!

Tim

Agree. I personally switched my order over to XR because I don't want to mess with this rig. However, I considered really just keeping my non XR and sending it to AEV which imo is a cooler rig than just stock XR.

It's insane what people will argue about online. On wrangler forum, I remember people getting into it about jeep ducking. I mean, c'mon really? And let's not even talk about all the threads about jeep waves (people creating some 'pecking order' of who waves first and what not?). Such a waste of time arguing about that online (or anywhere for that matter), but I guess there are a lot of people who have that time to waste.

I agree there is no need for arguing which is "better". At the same time misinformation really has no place here either. When someone makes a definitive statement about this or that being the better option without providing data and facts then it's just an opinion.

There is nothing wrong with giving an opinion but let's present it as such. Then we can have a healthy informative discussion about the subject.

What is Jeep ducking?

So incredibly true. It is still out there that the XR 392 has more lift than the 392. That the mopar shocks are better…. That the brakes are larger…. That the steering is tighter….

None of that is in fact a fact! What you read is mostly opinions. Saying a 500hp Jeep w/35s is a dog is amazing. I have owned close to 10 Jeep products. I owned a 2.5l TJ. My 392 on 35s is nothing short of amazing. KO2 35s are tiny in actual fact and are the only 35s rated over 100 mph…. I would guarantee that my 35 3.73 Jeep is faster now than it was with the stock falkens, since I know what and how to buy tires to minimize the impact of diameter. But again that is my opinion….

Mine is faster when I put the windshield down, because it provides more CAI into my cranial orifices.
I think faster, talk faster, therefore, everything is faster.
Because going 110+ in a brick, requires fast reflexes. 🤣

I hope I didn't start world War 3 here, was just curious if mine was an XR per original post. Now I know it isn't, decisions decisions.....

Mine is faster because I used my JScan and told the computer I have 10” tires. I never hit the limiter🤪. In fact it gets a little squirrelly when the speedo says 60…

No worries @Hollywood! Just me getting some stuff off my chest. Again, I'm sorry if I offended anyone.

Not to beat this topic completely to death, but if you took your 392 added lift, shocks, gears front and rear, beefed up spare tire carrier, tail light extensions, wheel flares, and any calibration needed associated with the re gearing, would 4k be unreasonable for all that in today's money with parts and labor prices? Even if you did 90% of the work yourself, your time is still worth something. Just a thought.

Good thought! Totally agree. Just tired of the whole "my schwantz is bigger than yours" crowd. I know...I can just ignore them, and I have. There's a couple who are in perpetual ignore status...they know who they are.

All good!

Oh I get it, you could put a too fuel dragster engine in a Wrangler and do quarter miles in 1 second and someone would inevitably say something about it. It's all these forums, not just this one. They can be fun.....

There is no lift difference. To make your 392 indiscernible from an XR doesn’t take much. If you wanted to do it…. Sell your shocks, rims and tires and with the money buy some XR take offs…. Get fender extensions and the hinge reinforcement From the dealer. Add bumpstops since the XR has less wheel travel, articulation, than a regular 392. And get a regear if you think it is needed for the tiny KO2 35s. At that point you, if you didn’t have the hinge already, you are in about $2500-3000.

But why do that... Get some AEV rims, no fender extension needed. Get some quality 35s MTs. If you go 37 then regear if not then leave it. If you go 37s you will need new a lift anyway. Then you will be about $4-5k with a lift, 37s and a regear.

I added up aftermarket goodies for comparison and the goodies in the XR package are fairly priced. Cheaper actually, than buying aftermarket.
A decent set of wheels and tires will run about $3k-$3.5k. Gear set, about $2k-$2.5k (with install), spare mount is about $500. If you throw in programming for the speed limit, $700.

If people want turn key, or like what the XR has, it’s a good deal.
But if you don’t like it, and want something different, you’ll spend more in the end.

Only thing to add to this is that a regular 392 comes with wheels and tires. Net of selling I got 35s, in a brand that I like, for less than $500. I have the reinforcement and the extension wasn’t required for my spare.

Also - don't forget that some people will buy an XR for the same reason people buy Rubicons, Hellcats, Z06s and ZL1s , etc. in the first place... to have the "baddest" factory version available at the time (which should ultimately be less common and therefore more valuable long term). There are some "benefits" to that for some people even though everyone knows that a "lower" version of any of those base vehicles can be purchased, and then modded, to be "better" (for that particular vehicle's purpose) in the end. If it was simply about having the "biggest," "fastest," "baddest," etc., nobody would ever buy the "factory bad boy." Everyone would just buy the cheapest base version and then build it like money is no object (assuming, of course, that money IS no object).

Most of us bought Rubicon 392s because we wanted a FACTORY V8 Rubicon, (whether or not we got the XR), right? So what's the difference if some of us wanted the "Factory" bad boy version of it and some didn't? Who cares? For me, the XR has everything I need/want out of Wrangler (except maybe larger tires - which it can easily handle with no additional supporting mods). For others, that's not the case. As has been said... IF the XR has essentially what you need/want in a Jeep... then it absolutely is a better financial option than "built, not bought." And, it has the added benefit of being a somewhat lower production (more rare) version of what will surely be the last of the bad boy Jeeps to ever be built. Usually, that rarity means higher long term resale, but that is yet to be seen.
