Has anyone gone through the trouble to relocate the oil filter? I was searching for filters for my Wife's Wagoneer when I saw this out of the corner of my eye (or browser...)

Which gave me the idea that maybe I'd rather just relocate the filter than deal with the hot, used oil flowing everywhere when I spin off the filter in its current location. I recently moved and the movers wouldn't touch my oil catch pan so it got tossed and I bought the Valvomax drain valve and bag system, which makes the oil pan a mess-free operation supposedly. but that dang filter has always bothered me. Sure, I can try the old baggie over the filter trick, and I made a sort-of-useful shield out of some magnets and an old cooking sheet, but they are cumbersome at best.

Relocating the filter to somewhere easier to deal with might be an acceptable option. Anyone taken this on? If so, the big question is where did you put it?

I just did the first oil change at 1576 miles. I used a gallon size zip-loc bag over it. Caught all oil, except for some follow-up drips that kept coming down the oil lines and coming out the filter mount. I draped the suspension (tie rod and drag link, from what i recall) in paper towels. Cleaned up easy. Also, I drained it without warming it up so I didn't have to deal with hot oil. The 0W-40 seemed to flow easily even "cold". However, this is southwest FL, and the garage was in the low 80s. Going to send samples to the test lab, and the instructions said to sample it "cold" so as not to introduce fuel contamination. Not sure about that. Also, after completely draining, I pour about a half quart of new oil through with the drain plus still out to help push out / clean out any final little pools of old oil still sitting in there. I pre-fill oil filter (Actually pre-fill to about 80-85% full, as the filter is tilted some, as you know).

Eager to hear your review of the ValvoMax drain kit. The oil filter position definitely sucks!

I just stumbled back on this thread.

I have a few oil changes with the Valvomax bag setup.

My opinion is that it's just "ok".

The adapter that screws into the oil pan is slightly larger than the drain plug was, so maybe it's a bit bigger target for a rock or something to damage it, no issues so far.

Draining the oil is a mess free operation, screwing on the hose assembly pushes the valve in the drain plug, opening the flow. It drains into the bag without a mess, and when you unscrew the hose, there might be the tiniest drip to wipe off., But oil does not shoot out everywhere missing the pan and making a mess.

The downside..... it's slower. A lot slower. The oil has to pass through a tiny 1/4 vinyl hose. And leaving the hose assembly attached to the bag has caused it to have a bit of a kink in it, making the problem worse. I thought about changing out that hose for something less cheap, see below.

The bag is a bit of a hassle. It's not a problem when it's empty, but after you get three oil changes in there, it's heavy, and it's not rigid, so it's floppy and does not want to stay in place. It's also seemingly delicate. Having a giant bag of used oil sitting around in the shop waiting to be punctured, seems risky. My old solid drain pan wasn't a concern. Now that I have a 4-post lift, I find the need to elevate the bag to connect it to the drain. I've yet to find a good way to do that, but as mentioned above if I replace the tiny hose with something else, I can make it much longer. I might even use the hardware and just adapt it to my vacuum extractor, which seems like a good idea for eliminating the bag, and still having the mess free convenience with the added benefit of faster drain times due to the vacuum being applied. I think this might just be the best of both worlds, and would work just as well without a lift.

Working or relocating that oil filter next.

I've taken to just using some aluminum foil draped under the filter, folded to route the dripping from filter area over the suspension parts and into the oil pan underneath. A bit annoying, but not enough to make me want to throw any real $$$ at a relocation.

Oil udder. Used it on my last two oil changes…

Mess free

I bought one of those, and it disintegrated before I ever got to use it. Like something just ate the rubber...
Get it replaced by the manufacturer. Mine is fine and works great.

I’ve thought about it too, mostly for the same reason the filter location just guarantees a mess. A couple people have done relocations on the Hemi, but it’s not super common on the 392 because there’s not a ton of free real estate and you’ve got to be careful with hose routing and heat. Most setups end up putting the remote mount on the inner fender or up by the radiator support, but that usually means custom brackets and making sure the lines are well shielded. If you’re already running a Valvomax and just want a cleaner oil change, the bag trick or a simple deflector works, but if you’re set on relocating it, it’s doable just requires some creativity and a good mounting spot that doesn’t cook the lines.
