2015 JKU Rubicon Hard Rock
Just got my 2022 392 XR in Tusdadero. Super excited after waiting almost 6 months for it. One thing I noticed is how much orange peel is in the brand new paint. My JKU hardrock was not like this. Never seen this much orange peel on any new car. Even though the 392 costs 80k-ish, you get the paint quality from a $30k car......

Good news is I already have an appt to have it polished/paint corrected/ceramic coated.

Yeah the paint is not high end. If you think about it a 392 is really just a $40k vehicle with lots of upgrades. The paint sadly is not one of those upgrades. It is basic $40k robot paint job, not at the same level of detail as Porsche or other luxury brand. It’s funny that your JKU paint was better though. I would imagine it’s the same paint shop and maybe the exact same robots. I think as Jeep tackles new colors there is a bit of a learning curve to each one. But yes it’s not a $80k paint job and Stellantis should address that deficiency. I did a DA 2-stage correction, STEK DYNO PPF and ceramic coating. It’s more about the ease of cleaning and the protection but even PPF has some orange peel to it. But I love my Firecracker Red 392 and wouldn't trade her for a Guards Red Porsche 911 with flawless paint.

It is Stellantis after all. They have some great ideas but sometimes their execution leaves something to be desired.

My gray 392 has great paint. Better than the GT 500 Mustang that used to be in that garage stall. My TRX that will replace the 392 also has decent paint...the center stack issues of the truck has delayed delivery however. Sigh.

Is the orange peel all over the body or just certain parts? There's a reason for my question.

I actually like to see a little orange peel. Tells me there is some extra clear coat. As soon as that is removed you can’t paint correct as much.

@Turboencabulator is totally right. People spend $90k thinking it is something it isn’t. They also think it is a “first run“ vehicle, JL came out in 2018…. The 392 motor came out in 2010. There is not many parts that are “new” for the 392. Or even specific to the 392. XR package is used on 1000’s of Jeeps, so now there is even fewer specific wrangler 392 parts.

Again sorry for your issues @1newbie
I think the root cause is the tuscadero pink. Unfortunately, I have done more painting than I ever wanted to. From my experience orange peel is a result of not having the atomization dialed in properly or being in a rush and laying down too much paint. As it is robotically painted I think atomization is the culprit. It might be worth making a warranty claim?
In my unfortunate orange peel experience I had to wet sand the paint for hours back to a workable base. In that case I was using a new paint I had never worked with. I went with the cut n’ buff technique (wet sand between thin coats then machine polish the final coats) because I could never get a clean finish with that particular paint. Got it done but never again. I use a similar subtraction technique when welding (which I suck at). As the saying goes “A grinder and paint make me the welder I ain’t” ;)
The good news is more common paints like my Firecracker Red are actually fine with little to no orange peel or other defects.

Orange peel is from a lack of paint not extra. The clear coat didn't flow out, something a robot cant see but a good painter can. The best paint job is just before it runs.

I am sorry that is not true. It can be caused by a few things. Lack of product is not one of them. I have painted multiple vehicles. Paint correction can fix orange peel, if it was lack of product, paint correction would make it worse.

But still my opinion, I liked to see orange peel. It tells me excessive product. I can correct it If I want or I can wait till I get swirls or scratches and then correct it. No paint on the hinges etc can’t be fixed without a respray.

I was in error that it is from lack of clear. Also it is not from extra clear. I do know while I am clear coating if it starts to set up looking like orange peel that extra coat gets it to flow. Paint correction can fix a bad paint job I just dont like to sand what clear is on it to fix it. Jeep is well known for poor paint and light coverage, clear and color. Mine had about 4K of rework to get it right.

Found a few bubbles on my hard top.
