Looking for some advice on how to straighten the muffler. I know some people have been able to do it.

Each exhaust tip has a clamp a few inches from the side of the muffler. lossen the clamp and the exhaust tip will rotate a little bit. There is a pin that stops them from turning to far I had to file out a bit more of a notch to get my tips to line up better.
I loosened the clamps that connect the muffler to the pipes and gave the muffler a slight twist up on the passenger side then tightened everything back up. I didn’t get to picky though because I’m planning on a new exhaust over the winter.

I noticed mine were out of alignment/level because those clamps (shown by @Mouse and @seanpholman above) were already loose from the factory. So when I gave the tips a little knuckle tap, they moved right into place. I just tightened them down once they were in place and they haven't moved since!

13mm deep socket, loosen the clamp for the muffler hanger, push the muffler up as far as it will go, tighten the clamp, release the muffler, adjust the tips. When you push it up while loosened it will be overcorrected but come back back to about level when you let go of it after tightening.

Edit: There are two clamps upstream of the muffler that can be loosened to adjust the angle of the muffler. You will find them just forward of the muffler.

We tried that today. It appears those clamps only go around the exhaust pipes and have nothing to do with the height of the muffler. Loosening them, lifting the muffler, and then tightening them did nothing. I must be doing something wrong.

There was an old thread about this from October 2021, one member wrote:

”I got my muffler issue resolved after one day at the dealership. The mechanic loosened the flanges and bolts which hold the connections starting from the catalyctic converter all the way to the muffler flange. He did some shaking and wiggling of the pipes until he gets some alignment of the pipes and the muffler at its leveled positioned and tightened it back. It worked.”

My muffler is crooked too, but it doesn’t bother me too much. One day when I have some time, I’ll take it to the dealer or (more likely) a local trusted shop and let them put it on a lift. Let them handle it real quick. I don’t have a lift so it would probably be much easier for a shop to knock it out faster.

Just my 2 cents- When I have to take my car to the shop, I only have them do one thing per visit. That way they focus better and I believe do better at the one task. I don’t show up with a laundry list of things for them to do, because I feel they wouldn’t be as focused on what I think is important.

I misunderstood you saying the muffler was crooked, the clamps allow you to adjust the exhaust pipe location.

Jen - I did the same as most others by loosening the clamps. However, I was able to straighten mine out by simply wiggling them back and forth while the clamps were loose. A couple of trial and errors and they lined up perfectly. Re-tightened the clamps and haven't touched it since.

When your moving them around it will seem like you're not accomplishing much, but you are.

There are clamps for each of the 4 tips and you are correct, those only adjust the angle of the tips. If you look to the other side of the muffler (towards front of jeep) you will find two more clamps. Sorry earlier I said there was just one. Those are the ones to loosen so that you can adjust the angle of the muffler. After the muffler is adjusted, adjust the tips so they are even.

Very helpful. I’ll try that this week. Thanks!
