1975 Jeep J20, String Gray 392 XR
Got the call from my dealer Saturday morning and had to drive 4 hours to pick it up but, so far, it's worth every bit of the wait. Still taking it easy on the throttle (mostly) as I'm just under 200 miles now. I'll get more pics soon, it's getting PPF put on right now. Here is one of the dealer pics and then couple from my first drive with the salesman to fuel it up.

I am really impressed with the ride and comfort of the JL/392 over my JK. I was concerned with the posts talking about loose steering but compared to my JK the steering is much more "tight" and requires less activity. And the sound is intoxicating, I can't wait to really open it up!

I do have some minor complaints, mostly with the content of the XR package. I thought would be much taller with the XR package. Of course, I should preface this with me stating I came from a JK with 3.5" lift and 37s, so what I am used to plays into this quite a bit. To me, the stock XR doesn't even need any sort of step to easily get in/out. It's not like I am tall either, only 5' 10", and my wife, who is 5'7", feels the same. But then, maybe with all that power I don't want it to sit higher and just need to get used to it. I do like the stance of it. I guess time will tell, right now I feel like it needs 37s and some spacers at a minimum.

The jack block is just a small, orange, plastic block that is the same size as the jack base. I was expecting something more like the AEV jack base that is much bigger and gives the jack a wide footprint when using it. Glad I kept my AEV one...

I believe the tire relocation kit will accommodate 37s. It looks like the 3rd brake light has two vertical rails that attach it to the hinge gate, which you can loosen the screws and slide up to fit the 37s. I will know more when I pick it up from the PPF shop and get a chance to look at that closer.

I do like the 4.56 gears, the throttle response is snappy and the Jeep is quick to accelerate from any speed, even with 35s. For those who are curious how it might affect mileage. At 70MPH, I am running 2000 RPM and getting about 18MPG on the highway at 5000FT above sea level.

Looks great! I have the exact same specs on order for 2022. I've been searching high and low to see how the Sting Gray XR looks. Happy with my choice. Just got my VIN# today.... now the wait begins.

I think you will love the sting gray. I too had a hard time deciding on color. I stuck with gray because my JK was Anvil and I had gone with orange accents and we really loved the look of it. So, I planned on following suit with this gray Jeep but after seeing it in person I like the gold/bronze accents on the gray a lot. I will post more pictures soon. Let me know if there is anything specifically you would like a picture of.

Also, congrats on your order. The wait isn't easy but it's worth it!

Nice!!! What was your order date?

I ordered on 8/13, received my VIN on 8/20 and waited for what felt like a decade to receive it on 10/30. It was actually a pretty quick process, I know others have waited much longer. I am just an impatient person.

Yeah, at first I struggled between white and hydroblue. I like the subtleness of the sting gray. Just trying to decide if I get the black grill or not.

You and me both. I ordered 8/19 and the past 10.5 weeks have been brutal to say the least. You’re damn lucky…today my dealer said I’m scheduled for build week Nov 29, with a delivery at the end of Dec. I was hoping to have it at the end of this month. F!

Nice! Looks great in Sting Gray. You are lucky that you didn’t have to wait as long as many of us.

If I had to do it over again I would order with the body color grille and then purchase the black grille after. Then I could have the body color hanging in my garage as a decoration and pay the same price (either way you pay for the black grille). I thought about this after but didn't want to change the order once it was submitted and risk further delays.

I'm surprised a new black grill is that "cheap"

Just to compare, I put 35" tires on my regular 392. At 70mph, I'm at 1,800rpm and 19mpg.

Nice! And Congrats! The matte grille on the sting grey looks really good. Makes me wish I ordered it.

I have the original 392 with original 33s . LOL. Next time I go on the freeway, I will note RPMs and MPG at 70MPH unless someone else does it before I do.

Interesting, grimjeeper.com says you should be at 1627 RPM in that configuration.
So they must not be apples to apples comparison. Does the XR have true 35s or 315 metric. about a half inch different in diameter.....

At the site there is the option to enter the actual tire size and it converts it. For 315/70/17 that is 34.36.

This was from Motortrend about the difference in gearing between 4.56 and optional 4.88 gearing and RPM:

“Be prepared to turn some higher-than-usual revs on the highway with that 4.88 setup: 60 mph will require about 2,100 rpm with the automatic, 2,250 rpm with the manual (those numbers drop to 2,000 and 2,150 with the Xtreme Recon package's tires). For the record, the 4.56:1 ratio that comes with the Xtreme Recon package just slightly overcompensates for its 35-inch tires, so engine revs actually rise by about 100 rpm at 60 mph relative to that of the standard Wrangler Rubicon on 285/70R17 tires.”
