I know it's been discussed before but I thought I would share my latest experience.

Last week, at 29,000 miles, I had my first Gorilla Glass crack. It started as a rock hit like I have had numerous times but within the 20 miles to home, it had 2 different lines that were 2 feet long each.

I have $0 windshield deductible and Safelite was at my house the next day to replace the windshield. The Tech stated that the insurance doesn't cover Gorilla Glass and he said he feels like it isn't any better than their glass anyway.

8 days later, I got another rock hit, coming home from the trail. It has a 1" spider web chip and Safelite is coming out today to repair it.

I don't know if I was just lucky before or if Gorilla Glass makes a difference. It sure seems like it does.

I definitely think it makes a difference, took a pretty big gravel hit and mine hasn't cracked yet.

Gorilla glass might be more resistant to cracking when hit by a rock, but it seems like it is much more likely to spread if it does start cracking. If you get a crack of any size, get it fixed pronto or it will very likely spread.....IMHO.

I was lucky and was able to get the last little starburst on my Gorilla glass fixed quickly and it has not spread. On a side note.......do you really think it is necessary to get the cruise recalibrated after a new windshield. I had my windshield lowered (replacing spider web shade) and seems like a new glass wouldn't really affect anything if it was the same type of glass. The stuff doesn't actually mount to the glass.

Safelite didn't mention anything about calibration and I don't know if they did it or not.

I would raise holy hell if I paid for gorilla Glass and they tried to put some cheap glass as a replacement Safelite is considered one of the worst glass replacement companies bar none they buy out the contracts with Geico and other insurance companies so that's who gets sent out you basically have a contract with Safelite but you have the right to have it replaced where you want and this is one of the times your dealer is your friend! They will tell you they have the right to use there glass but if you read your coverage it claims only if it equals the factory quality
Which it never does! Your factory gorilla glass is light-years ahead of the cheap Chinese replacement you get! Also there is the design difference between gorilla glass with all the Easter eggs and such!

Regardless of who your insurance company is, you should be able to select whoever you want to install your glass. I have State Farm and they contract with Safelite to handle their claims, but you have the option to use another shop, which I do and demand Gorilla Glass. Not only is it better glass, it comes with a "...2-year, unlimited-mile limited warranty for the original retail purchaser, covering one replacement for certain damage from road debris". My installer also told me about this when I had a windshield replaced on my Gladiator (JTRD).

That's good info guys. I will demand Gorilla Glass in a couple of weeks, after this one shatters.

There is a caveat that insurance companies only replace OEM parts for cars up to a certain age, after which they can use even used parts as long as they meet OEM "standards" ... as defined by the insurance company itself.

Call and ask. I don't make the rules, just sharing from experience. Also this is from AMICA, which is rated as one of the most reputable, customer oriented, and expensive co.

When it comes to windshields just measure the thickness and you would probably win your case, non OE glass for the most part is crap not to say there aren't aftermarket glass companies that can't make a decent one you would just rarely see it coming out of a Safelite van!

@ParadigmDawg - You get a 2 yr warranty on Gorilla glass. Was it out of warranty?

I had to have mine replaced after only 4K miles.
