Just out of curiosity, Are there any trails in Moab where it's necessary to carry extra gas for the 392?...asking for a friend...

I could second Elephant Hill. It also depends on how far out of town you want to get or how many trails you want to run in a day as many linked up and it can be easy to find yourself on an different trail (or three). If you plan on tooling around the backcountry, spending a lot of time exploring out at Dome Plateau or Chicken Corners you may consider it. I've never carried extra but I try to plan the day out where I'm not coming back on fumes; these vehicles can suck a lot of gas on long or continuous ascents and obstacles.

Thanks for the replies...I should have asked a different question. I welded up a bracket to hold a 4 gal rotopax. I'm running 3 trails (different days) I haven't done before: golden spike, metal masher and flat iron mesa. Looking at some of the YouTube videos of those trails, I'm a little concerned about hitting the rotopax on some of the obstacles like golden crack or widow maker.

Personally, I wouldn't run any extra gas (weight) on the back for Metal Masher or Golden Spike. I've run both +1 in a day and never had fuel problems. I've never ran Flat Iron Mesa but I think it's only like 55mi total.

For rock crawling, I've always felt external tanks are more of a liability, particularly if your line choice gets sketchy. Also, unless I'm going on a much longer run, without significant climbs/ledges, I generally remove the spare to prevent drag on dropoffs.

I think you'll be fine IMO 🍻 ... you're running some reasonably short trails not overlanding for 100mi+

Yep looks like you just might touch that Rotopax

Thanks for the replies....it's coming off....I'll use it for Crown King here in AZ...haven't done that yet....

You don't really need it for Crown King either. Have done it several times and made the run and all the way home and still fine. That being said, things can happen that delay you or you may want to give it to someone else out on the trail who didn't plan as well. I've given gas, and received it over the years, so always good to have, if you can.
