So I’m looking to go to 37s. Currently running the KO2s and am generally happy with them. However they really like to catch and release small rocks which leads to chipped hinges and scratched doors not to mention unhappy people behind me.
I was looking at Nittos like the Recon Grappler but a lot of comments about reduced MPG due to the thick sidewalls. I’m already at about 10.5 city with added weight of mods.
So I’m looking for tire suggestions. Most of my off-road will be gravel roads and rock crawling not much mud or deep sand. Hopefully something that is a true 37, won’t have crazy road noise, and won’t drop my MPG much more. Oh and performs well rock crawling and won’t fling tiny rocks all over. Thanks for your input!
Also I was planning on keeping the factory wheels but adding real headlock rings. I know one way to compensate for a heavier tire is to buy lighter wheels so if anyone has suggestions there I would appreciate it!

Not a tire recommendation but here’s good hinge protection. I run on gravel / loose rock trails BLM / Forest Service roads and have no rock chips on my hinges.

I''m in Chandler if you want to stop by my shop and see literally every tire side by side? I have run everything you can on a Jeep and the Nitto Ridge Grappler or TOYO RT are the best overall tire IMO. Great life on the tread, low noise and able to handle our terrain in PHX.

Any relation to Ricky Doetsch?
Yes sir! Rick is my cousin and founded Doetsch Shocks out of El Cajon. Our businesses are unrelated but he's in TX now doing more SxS parts.

Rick and I worked together at Rough Country in the early 80's. We had a lot of fun back in the day. I haven't talked to him since he was doing some bull riding but I will have to look him up and reconnect.

Oh that's great. I've run into a couple guys who worked with him there and a few other places. He got out of CA a few years ago and is still wrangling on horses, which is why TX was a way better fit.

Nitto trail grappler is hands down an excellent rock tire grips all rocks but they will throw even larger rocks than ko2’s

Ugh! I know that MTs don’t grab the small rocks but the road noise! I guess everything is a compromise.

I've run Toyo MTs for a decade. I now run Cooper STT Pro tires on my 392, and Nitto Trail Grapplers on my wife's Gladiator. All were/are 37s.

In southwest UT, AZ, NV, for me, the Toyo MTs were the best offroad by a small margin. The Coopers and Nittos are right behind at a very close second place. The main difference is that the Coopers aren't quite as good in snow. The Coopers are the quietest and track the best on road. The Nittos are the loudest on road, and are considerably louder than the Coopers. The Toyos can tend to have a case of the wanders on road initially, and don't track as well as the other two. The tread blocks are tall and fairly soft, so they can feel a little squirmy at first. As the tires wear in this feeling goes away.
