AEV Spare Tire Carrier and Fuel Caddy

The Mopar tailgate reinforcement comes off easy. You don't need a spacer because the problem is that you can't pull the tire in close enough to make contact with the tire carrier with an aftermarket wheel. Factory wheel or AEV wheel works fine. Most people have aftermarket wheels with 3.5" to 4.5" Backspacing to support the aftermarket lift. That's why I had to add bump stops to 3 locations where the tire pulls up to the carrier.

Has anyone used a grinder to get rid of the antenna mount on the Mopar tailgate reinforcement bracket? Just curious to see what it looks like, if it was done professionally or at home and finally did it truly work. I searched YouTube and the forum and can’t find anything. Thank you

Are you wanting to do that so the AEV carrier and tank will fit? If so you dont need the factory reinforcement, take it off.

If just wondering about grinding it off for another reason, the plate is aluminum so it would be shaped relatively easily.

I thought about taking it off but I have no idea what the paint looks like underneath. Also, I don’t have the shorter color matched bolts. I was thinking it would be easier to leave it on and grind it down. I’m no metal worker so just not sure.

I am willing to bet the paint looks fine under, would be different if it was painted body color.

Shorter bolts are available but understand about the painted bolt heads.

I took off my Mopar reinforcement, but I installed the Teraflex Alpha Hinge and Tire Carrier.

I can attest though, the paint was perfectly fine - both on the tailgate itself and both hinges. The hinges were so nicely painted that I actually wrapped them in foam padding before putting them into storage.

I took mine off and was able to reinstall the same bolts. I made sure they didn’t bottom out when putting them back in and they worked fine.

I wonder if there's anyway to modify and mount the AEV fuel caddy onto the Teraflex Alpha Hinge and Tire Carrier. Of course, 10 gallons of fuel and a 37 or 40 inch spare is a heck of a lot of weight, like having two spare tires.

Just curious how many miles do you want to be able to achieve between gas stations?

are you looking to get a 400 mile range or there about ?

With fuel caddy, max tire is 37". So I wonder if Nitto 38 is 37.7, will it fit. It's tempting to try to install in a oem 392 bumper.

Not easily. But Titan makes a more universal spare mounted tank.

This seems easier... maybe.

Interesting and certainly much cheaper than an entire AEV setup. I kind of wish they had a smaller verision. Of course if concerned with weight you just dont have to fill it but I would be satisfied with 5 or 6 gallons and a smaller tank.

That's why I went this route, 4 gallons total. I'd prefer a fuel caddy integrated with spare mount though, but not on tailgate.

5 gallons is pretty easy to get with a rotopax stashed just about anywhere.

Edit: @Ted392 beat me to it.

I think that’s a nice setup looks good. I priced it out just over $400.00 I liked the 1.75 gallon just a bit smaller but less gas. Another 50 to 60 mile range about . I wish Teraflex would come up with a bracket that bolts up to there tire carrier 🤔

Agree. I thought they said it was coming but that was a long time ago.
Teraflex makes a rotopax mount that attaches to the high-lift jack mount that attaches to the the Teraflex Alpha/carrier mount....lots of mounts...
