I have been using the 67 Designs JL mount for about a month and I wanted to share my initial impressions. This was my Christmas present from my family after we ordered our Jeep, as we waited months.. and monthsšŸ˜“ for it to arrive. I wasn't sure which mount I would prefer so we ordered both:
  • JL Rail (series 55)
  • 20mm track ball
  • small matte finish carbon fiber arm
  • Universal G2 Phone Holder
  • MagMount G3 Phone Holder
It was defiantly kinda pricey but I am very impressed with the overall fit and finish. Every part is precisely made with high quality components. For example they use 3M VHB adhesive pads custom cut to perfectly match the base and maximize the adhesive area. The Universal G2 phone holder is made in the USA with a very strong "trail rated" spring mechanism that is never going to drop your phone on the floor. Each rail is individually serial numbered and they fit perfectly in the dash. I ended up just using the VHB pads and the two existing dash screws to secure it. I trimmed the existing dash pad to fit in-between under the rail. I like that you can add to it as you needs change and they have tons of different device holders.

After having used both the Universal and Magnetic holders, I found that I prefer the Magnetic G3 mount for daily ease of use. The Universal G2 mount is very secure and more for trail use IMHO.

I doubled up the included steel plates on the back of my iPhone for a better magnetic lock through my Speck phone case. They also include a set of 2 curved steel plates if you want to keep the coil area clear to use MagSafe/Qi chargers.

I was originally excited about using Apple CarPlay, but unfortunately it is not integrated wireless CarPlay in the Wrangler. So I bought the OTTOCAST wireless CarPlay adapter and tried it out. CarPlay looks cool but there is one major flaw. I use Google maps and often I like to move around in the map when navigating, as well as scrolling up ahead to watch for reported speed traps and traffic. But when you use Apple CarPlay, Google maps will only show the turn by turn list, the map function is disabled. I get it, they want you to use the Jeep display but the phone map is so much faster and easier to use. So I returned the OTTOCAST and now I am using BlueTooth.... And XM radio.... šŸ¤¬damn they got me hooked.

I love when I find a company that is designing and making world class quality gear right here in the USA. The 67 designs mount is working out great and I figure this might help someone out.

Nice review! I like the holder, not a fan of exposed screws though.
That google maps/car play thing you mention is the most ridiculous and stupid feature google has ever created. Itā€™s totally absurd. It makes me using my second iphone whenever I need to browse the map once driving, totally nuts šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

šŸ¤Ø So now I understand why Apple/Google set it up that way. So that I would have to buy a second iPhone. Very sneaky Silicon Valley šŸ˜’

Really nice, @Turboencabulator ! Thanks for sharing. It definitely made my short list of first mods (IF i ever actually get to take delivery!)

As for the Google Maps... add the "App" to your screen via the "CarPlay" settings for that connection in your iPhone settings. I can't imagine it functions any differently than wired or my Cplay2Air wireless adapter. I can use either: Apple Maps or Google Maps - but I have to select Google Maps (because my iPhone defaults to Apple maps whenever I click and address in a message or on a webpage...) and I had to add the "app" for Google Maps

Great review! Thanks for the detailed information and pictures. I have the Bulletpoint system. The mounting arms look identical and the part that screws into the dash is similar. I have no idea but it sure seems like one company stole the others idea.

Iā€™ve been back and forth between this system and bulletpoint. What made you decide on 67?

I have it installed but that doesnā€™t change anything.
Here is how Iā€™d like to use google maps, itā€™s pretty simple:
- I want to put the destination address on my iphone, because this is way more convenient and faster. And that way I can do it before driving or even before entering the vehicle
- I want to connect to carPlay and be able to see the map and directions on the vehicle navigation screen, cause itā€˜s more convenient and thatā€˜s what the screen is for I guess
- I want to be able to browse/scroll the map or change the destination with my iphone while it is connected to carPlay case it is faster and more convenient that way
- I want to be able to disable that turn by turn/steps/directions view cause itā€™s totally useless, pointless, nonsense and absurd. Why on earth they are not allowing to do that?
Ofc itā€™s not about the Jeep, itā€™s about Google maps / Apple carplay integration in general

When it comes to the holder. Isnā€™t RAM Mounts the company that invented that entire ball style mounting system? I had their ball based Gopro mount ages ago and I believe they were the pioneers back then. Possibly both Bulletpoint and 67 are copycats.

i had the 67 designs clamp style mount you showed on my jk for two years until i sold getting ready for my 392. Best mount Iā€™ve ever used - never loosened or required additional tightening. Minimal to no ā€œshakeā€ of the phone except when on some washboard trails. I wheeled at Hidden Falls and Wolf Creek and never had issues with this mount.

Only complaint is that I wish it was powered - preferably a QI charger or something like that.

I kept the arm and phone clamp and will be getting a new rail to fit the 392 when it is finally built.

This is something I've been researching in anticipation of my 392. Bulletpoint vs 67 designs? Any other honorable mentions?

I don't think I need the full rail as I will probably only mount a phone..... but like the way it looks in the storage cubby. I guess the question I have is if people actually use the cubby area if the phone rail system is not mounted there?

To be really honest and stupid I went with Bulletpoint because I am a gun enthusiast. I got driver and passenger side dual ball setups from them. Gives me room to expand to CB mic or portable radio holder. They have a multiple mount or single driver/pass mounts too. I did not use the adhesive, just held in by the same screws the 67 uses. My sun glasses fit between the two sides which is why I did not use their single piece mount that spans the entire recess. Looks a little unfinished in this picture with the square hole in the middle but you cant see that from a seated position at all. Phone has fallen off the magnet once while off-roading and that was in my LJ but same magnet/arm. I found the short arms to be more appropriate in the JL than the standard.

For me it came down to the 67 designs Rail System vs Bulletpointā€™s RubiGrid system. I prefer the rail system because the mounts can be slid off the end and are infinitely positionable along the rail. And my sunglasses fit perfectly in the middle. šŸ˜Ž Also it was clear on the 67 designs webpage that all components including the phone holder were designed/made in the USA. On the bullet point I was not as sure, it may be made in the USA, just not sure. To me that matters. šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

@YukonCornelius: I tried the app thing, sadly it didnā€™t fix the glitch. Any update on your ride?

Indecently I tested BlueTooth vs Wireless CarPlay with and adapter vs. wired CarPlay for audio quality. I found that BlueTooth and Wireless CarPlay sound about the same to me, only wired CarPlay sounds any better. But Iā€™m not an Audiophile and this is a Jeep, so I may be totally wrong. šŸ¤£

I agree. I might have moved too quickly on this also. I still have the boxes from Bulletpoint and they say "Designed in Ohio, made in China" in the smallest print ever.

Just placed my order from 67D, you are correct in your statement about not being cheap. But like you, made in the USA is a big deal for me. I donā€™t even have this Jeep yet and itā€™s already costing me money. People are always looking for names for their Jeepā€™s. How about The Money Pitā€¦

That's a bummer @Turboencabulator - not sure why it is behaving that way. Thought CarPlay was an Apple standard that manufacturers had to adhere to. Does it still do the same thing wired?

@scarab Not sure which isn't working but each of your scenarios is supported by CarPlay - You can run Apple Maps on the phone and on the dash, Google Maps on the phone and on the dash, and a hybrid of google or apple on the phone and the other on the dash... the screenshots below were taken about 30 minutes ago. I just wanted to check to see if I was correct. It perfoms this way wired and wireless (via Car2Play wireless adapter.) This is on a 4Runner, so there's that, but again, I thought CarPlay was an Apple standard...

I have to suggest Waze, which I think Google gobbled up a couple years ago. But, it functions with CarPlay and the crowdsourced alerts are helpfulā€¦
Appreciate these posts and the heads up on these solutions. Will be giving these a try. Disappointing about Bulletpoint.

@YukonCornelius you are correct sir the Apple Maps/Google Maps app does run both on the Jeep screen and on the iPhone simultaneously. But what you canā€™t do is use the moving Map screen on the iPhone while connected to CarPlay you ONLY get the turn by turn list. The only real map screen you get is the Jeep screen, which is not nearly as useful. For me that was a deal breaker, I prefer using the iPhone for moving Map and the Jeep Screen for music.

And just got an email that my order was shipped. I donā€™t remember the last time I ordered something online and it was shipped within an hour.

Yep, thatā€˜s exactly the kicker Iā€™m talking about and thatā€™s the main reason I almost never use Apple car play in any car :/

I have not even tried car play in the 392. I put an aftermarket stereo in the LJR with CarPlay and the google maps is useless in that configuration.
