Hi All, My 392 is just over a year old ~11k miles and a few things I have noticed since owning:
  • issue with the Radio, like the sub amp cut out: I have seen this in the threads as a known issue. it only happened once and went away after restart.
  • Engine stumble: this happened 3 or 4 times where starting off from a stop the engine would stumble like it had no power and then regain itself.
  • Engine knock: this also happened like 3 or 4 times on initial cold start there would be a distinct knocking (lifters?) that would go away after a few seconds.
  • Gear whine on deceleration: It sounds like from some threads this is what it is and get used to it? it's not loud but noticeable.
  • Brake release "thud" after coming to complete stop. this happened a few times also, it's like the brakes are sticking and hard release once you let your foot off the brake to start again.
Just running this past the group to see if any of these are serious and need to be looked at since most of these are constant issues right now.

I bring Earl in next week for its 2nd oil change and was going to run this past the Service Guys...

Thanks

Bobby, If you already have not done the following do so now or have it checked by "Earl"

First: Open your hood, remove your fuse block cover and push down on EVERY fuse and relay in there. I have had 2 new JL's both including the new 392 had fuses that were not fully seated.

Second: Check both the front and rear axles for the correct fluid content, while your at it check the transfer case as well.

These are all reported and confirmed issues, it will take you or them a few minutes but can save you much aggravation! Cheers

I have had the engine stumble a hand full of times now. Interestingly it has done it in almost the exact same spot as I am going to work in the morning....a few minutes from home accelerating onto the highway.

You know, I did 1 and 2 when I first got Earl from reading the forums: pushed in all the fuses and relays and added a bit of fluid to the transfer case, Diff's were ok. After you posted this, I went and pushed on all the fuses and relays, and some were loose... So, I guess I need to check regularly!

Bobby, it never hurts to just a second and check, honestly I think the fuse issue is a case of quality control and just getting missed at the factory or the equipment responsible for seating them is not properly calibrated.

With that said I checked my 2018 when I bought it and a number were not seated. I checked them again about 10k later and they were fine so go figure. Glad your on top of it. Proactive maintenance is the best kind and can save you in the long run! Happy motoring!

Reviving this old thread.

I have noticed the “thud” feeling when letting off the brake and going from a stop. Anyone else? There’s no audible sound, just a feeling like slack was taken up. I did a little test by driving 10-15mph and giving acceleration, letting off and back on again to see if I could recreate it but it didn’t happen. It only occurs when letting off of the brake, but not every time. Anyone else?

Yep, I've had that same type of thing since new. I haven't dug in to figure out what it might be though. My transmission feels a little slippy off the start to me too, but not confident in the dealership to have them look at that either.

Radio is a common issue , could be car play , when I use aux for music with a dac it never cuts out

I haven't had the radio/amp issue in quite a while, maybe Software update or pushing in the relays helped.

I still have the other 3 issues: engine stumble (now maybe traction control issue?), noisy start up, feels like sticking brakes) randomly but not often. Gear whine on decel is constant but low enough that it doesn't bother me.

I think the engine stumble is the traction control kicking in for some reason?
I briefly saw the traction control light come on last time it happened when I went over the high long speed hump. But is it weird that it would happen at less than 25MPH?

I haven't had the transmission slip feeling yet but now I will keep a feel out for it.

O and this is a good one: my Jeep dealer left the oil filter loose on the 3rd oil change luckily, I caught it...

I have almost 22K miles on it now and it still a riot every time a drive it:)

Slipping feeling and traction control light could also be torque converter related. This recently happened with my girlfriends Grand Cherokee.

I have this also

So from what I’m seeing my 24 does this also and this is what I have, First off set your display to show you what gear your in and you will notice unless your at a stop for a full second the trans remains in second but anything more then very Light throttle it will then give you first but it’s by no means a smooth transition and this is what most people aren’t aware of and definitely is an every day issue depending on how you drive! Cold start lifter noise is super common and a wonderful way to remind you how your MDS lifters bleed down over night!!
Gear whine? Yes but only when very hot out!!! You can switch to a thicker weight gear oil and it stays fairly quiet at least for me anyway! You might hear it hurts fuel economy! At least in theory anyway, I haven’t noticed that and I often love to try and get the best mileage
At times, So if I missed anything I’m sorry but if I get some time I will re read the issues you described!!

Ahh ok now I will keep an eye on what gear I'm in, Thanks!

This happens when I've been waiting at a red light for a minute. I let off and roll forward and feel that sensation of slack being taken up, or something "falling" into place. It does feel gear related. I'll see what my gear number shows and report back.

What do you mean by “lifter bleed down”?

I plan to disable MDS right when I take delivery. I’d like to hear feedback from people who have lots of miles with MDS disabled.

DarkHorse8, Stop by the Charger forums and search on MDS, there are lots of folks there with higher mileage (130k) with mds disabled and have zero lifter/camshaft problems. It's common knowledge while MDS might save you a few bucks in fuel costs over the long term but it can destroy your engine when the lifters fail, and they will.

I have been running with my MDS disabled from day one and will stay that way as long as I own it.

This video encapsulates what I have been saying about MDS.

Don’t disable unless doing a full delete.

Crazy how there can be a physical break down of the 392 MDS HEMI and it be determined that if MDS disabled electronically, oil does not get everywhere it should which could cause issues.

However, you have many people who have disabled MDS electronically with the same engine and put miles on the engine without issues.

Has there ever been anybody who has had lifter failure after disabling MDS electronically? I can’t find that.

Ok. After using AI to scrub the internet to find anybody who had disabled MDS with the 392 HEMI (regardless of what platform it’s in), I cannot find anybody who has had lifter failure after disabling it electronically.

However, I did find something very interesting. 392 mounted to a manual transmission from factory do NOT have MDS but even those engines have documented lifter failure. This is leading me to believe that MDS isn’t the cause of lifter failure in the 392.

I’m starting to believe this is an oil pressure and oil quality issue. It seems the best thing to do (without modifications) is to change the oil in short intervals and do not idle for extended periods of time.

I’m going to keep digging into this until the day I take delivery. When that happens, I’ll drive it and enjoy it.
